Illusion caused by vibration of muscle spindles reveals an involvement of muscle spindle inputs in regulating isometric contraction of masseter muscles.

Spindle Ia afferents may be differentially involved in voluntary isometric contraction, depending on the pattern of synaptic connections in spindle reflex pathways. We investigated how isometric contraction of masseter muscles is regulated through the activity of their muscle spindles that contain the largest number of intrafusal fibers among skeletal muscle spindles by examining the effects of vibration of muscle spindles on the voluntary isometric contraction. Subjects were instructed to hold the jaw at resting position by counteracting ramp loads applied on lower molar teeth. In response to

Vibrotactile stimulators and virtual 3-D audio countermeasures, training and motion sickness symptoms with a simulated graveyard spin illusion.

The vestibular system by itself is incapable of effectively compensating for the graveyard spin illusion. We examined two countermeasures, i.e., efficacy of vibrotactile stimulation around the waist and virtual 3-D audio presented independently and jointly for controlling a simulated graveyard spin. We also examined: a) additional training with these countermeasures to improve "intuitiveness;" b) included non-perturbation trials along with perturbation trials; and c) monitored changes in well-being as measured by a motion sickness scale from pre- to post-test and immediately following each tri

Debate: Conversational AI and young people's mental health - friend or foe? - the illusion of a safe space for youth mental health.

Artificially intelligent (AI) chatbots are increasingly used for mental health support, yet their safety guidelines and ethical structures remain unclear, particularly for youth populations. We put forward that many AI-based mental health chatbots create the illusion of a safe and accessible therapeutic space. Drawing on observations from 117 publicly available applications, we contend that claims of full accessibility and confidentiality are countered by both explicit and at times implicit requirements to fully engage with the chatbot, including entering personal information, agreeing to exte

The Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) illusion in short-term memory: Opposite effects of retention interval on true and false recognition.

A short-term memory (STM) version of the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm was employed to investigate how true and false recognition evolved as STM contents were lost over a short time window immediately after initial encoding. Presentations of five-word DRM lists were followed by list-specific recognition tests applied either immediately or after a distractor-filled retention interval of 3, 9, or 27 s. Results showed a decrease in the probability of true recognition and an increase in the probability of false recognition as the retention interval grew longer. Based on the fuzzy-trace t

Seems Like a Touch? Comparing Emotional Experience and Illusion of Touch of Visual and Haptic Presentations of Mediated Social Touch in VR.

Social virtual reality (VR) applications enable users to experience highly immersive mediated interactions and social experiences. Especially embodied nonverbal communication, like mediated social touch, is mostly unique to social VR and potentially a major factor in enabling fulfilling emotional experiences at a distance. In our within-subjects study ($N = 28$), we compared feedback from wearable vibrotactile haptic devices with two established visual presentation forms of social touch: clipping and pseudo-haptics. Our findings suggest that the addition of haptic feedback can elicit significa

When dying worms look alike: Convergent pathology may create mechanistic illusion in plant-derived anthelmintic research.

The recent study by Devi et al. provided compelling ultrastructural and histological evidence of severe damage in Ascaridia galli following exposure to Meyna laxiflora seed extract, supporting its anthelmintic potential. However, the interpretation of such morphological alterations warrants further consideration. Similar cuticular and internal lesions have been reported in parasites exposed to chemically unrelated compounds with distinct molecular targets, suggesting that comparable structural phenotypes may represent convergent pathological endpoints rather than mechanistic signatures. On the illusion of auxotrophy: met15Δ yeast cells can grow on inorganic sulfur, thanks to the previously uncharacterized homocysteine synthase Yll058w.

Organisms must either synthesize or assimilate essential organic compounds to survive. The homocysteine synthase Met15 has been considered essential for inorganic sulfur assimilation in yeast since its discovery in the 1970s. As a result, MET15 has served as a genetic marker for hundreds of experiments that play a foundational role in eukaryote genetics and systems biology. Nevertheless, we demonstrate here through structural and evolutionary modeling, in vitro kinetic assays, and genetic complementation, that an alternative homocysteine synthase encoded by the previously uncharacterized gene

Multisensory integration underlying body-ownership experiences in schizophrenia and offspring of patients: a study using the rubber hand illusion paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a disorder of basic self-disturbance. Evidence suggests that people with schizophrenia may have aberrant experiences of body ownership: they may feel that they are not the subject of their own body experiences. However, little is known about the development of such disturbances. METHODS: Using a rubber hand illusion paradigm, we assessed body ownership in patients with schizophrenia (n = 54), healthy controls (n = 56), children/adolescents at increased familial risk of developing schizophrenia (n = 24) or mood disorders (n = 33), and children/adolescents without t

Faster processing of moving compared with flashed bars in awake macaque V1 provides a neural correlate of the flash lag illusion.

When the brain has determined the position of a moving object, because of anatomical and processing delays the object will have already moved to a new location. Given the statistical regularities present in natural motion, the brain may have acquired compensatory mechanisms to minimize the mismatch between the perceived and real positions of moving objects. A well-known visual illusion-the flash lag effect-points toward such a possibility. Although many psychophysical models have been suggested to explain this illusion, their predictions have not been tested at the neural level, particularly i

Fixating on the size-speed illusion of approaching railway trains: What we can learn from our eye movements.

Railway level crossing collisions have recently been linked to a size-speed illusion where larger objects such as trains appear to move slower than smaller objects such as cars. An explanation for this illusion has centred on observer eye movements - particularly in relation to the larger, longer train. A previous study (Clark et al., 2016) found participants tend to make initial fixations to locations around the visual centroid of a moving vehicle; however individual eye movement patterns tended to be either fixation-saccade-fixation type, or smooth pursuit. It is therefore unknown as to whic

Foot deformities in Renaissance paintings. A mystery of symbolism, artistic licence, illusion and true representation in five renowned Renaissance painters.

Although Renaissance artists were skilled in representing normal anatomy, a close look at some paintings reveals anatomical variations in the depiction of the feet of human figures. A systematic review has identified 25 paintings by five artists in which the presumptive medico-artistic diagnosis of congenital or acquired foot deformity seems to be varyingly present. The connection between these five painters and what factors have influenced artists' style in the depiction of such deformities is discussed. The possible iconography and medical-historical meaning of such variations, as well as th

Disturbances in body ownership in schizophrenia: evidence from the rubber hand illusion and case study of a spontaneous out-of-body experience.

BACKGROUND: A weakened sense of self may contribute to psychotic experiences. Body ownership, one component of self-awareness, can be studied with the rubber hand illusion (RHI). Watching a rubber hand being stroked while one's unseen hand is stroked synchronously can lead to a sense of ownership over the rubber hand, a shift in perceived position of the real hand, and a limb-specific drop in stimulated hand temperature. We aimed to assess the RHI in schizophrenia using quantifiable measures: proprioceptive drift and stimulation-dependent changes in hand temperature. METHODS: The RHI was elic

The initial representation of individual faces in the right occipito-temporal cortex is holistic: electrophysiological evidence from the composite face illusion.

Identifying a facial feature (e.g. the eyes) is influenced by the position and identity of other features (e.g. the mouth) of the face, supporting the view that an individual face is represented as a whole in the human brain. To clarify how early in the time-course of face processing this holistic individual representation is accessed we recorded event-related potentials during an adaptation paradigm of the composite face illusion (CFI). Observers performed a matching task on top halves of two faces presented sequentially. For each face pair, top and bottom face halves could be both identical,

Neurofeedback Modulation of the Sound-induced Flash Illusion Using Parietal Cortex Alpha Oscillations Reveals Dependency on Prior Multisensory Congruency.

Spontaneous neural oscillations are key predictors of perceptual decisions to bind multisensory signals into a unified percept. Research links decreased alpha power in the posterior cortices to attention and audiovisual binding in the sound-induced flash illusion (SIFI) paradigm. This suggests that controlling alpha oscillations would be a way of controlling audiovisual binding. In the present feasibility study we used MEG-neurofeedback to train one group of subjects to increase left/right and another to increase right/left alpha power ratios in the parietal cortex. We tested for changes in au

The rubber hand illusion in complex regional pain syndrome: preserved ability to integrate a rubber hand indicates intact multisensory integration.

In patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1, processing of static tactile stimuli is impaired, whereas more complex sensor … assessed by subjective reports or skin conductance response values. Stronger left-sided rubber hand illusions were reported by healthy subjects and left-side-affected CRPS patients. Moreover, for this subgroup, illness duration and illusion strength were negatively correlated. Overall, severity of neglect-like symptoms and clinical signs were not related to …

The digital physician illusion: individual innovativeness, unlike artificial intelligence attitudes, drives rational drug use through health literacy.

BACKGROUND: The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare has transformed how individuals access medical information. However, the impact of artificial intelligence attitudes and individual innovativeness on clinically disciplined behaviors, such as rational drug use, and the mediating role of health literacy remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to empirically investigate the structural relationships between artificial intelligence attitude, individual innovativeness, health literacy, and rational drug use within the digital health ecosystem of Northern Cyprus.

Reliability and Validity of a Novel, Portable Thermal Grill Illusion Apparatus Using Two Graphene Probes: An Initial Psychophysical Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: The thermal grill illusion (TGI) is a psychophysical phenomenon in which combined heat and cold stimulation evokes an illusory burning or painful heat sensation. Although TGI has potential for sensory assessment, conventional multi-probe apparatuses are often bulky and costly. This cross-sectional observational study conducted an initial psychophysical validation of a novel portable TGI device using two graphene probes. METHODS: Fifty-two healthy participants were evaluated using a novel 2-probe device and a previously used 8-probe apparatus. Concurrent validity and agreement were

Cortical neuromodulation by vibration-induced illusion of movement is observed in older individuals, but not in individuals with acute stroke: a cross-sectional fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Together with the aging of the world population, stroke incidence is expected to increase in the coming years. Stroke is frequently associated with sensorimotor impairments of the upper limb, including proprioceptive deficits, that substantially impair motor control and quality of life. Understanding how physiological aging and acute stroke affect proprioceptive processing is therefore crucial for developing targeted rehabilitation strategies. METHODS: Vibration-induced illusion of movement was administered to 28 young, 30 older, and 23 individuals with acute stroke to the distal
