The Dutch famine, 1944-1945, and the reproductive process. I. Effects on six indices at birth.

Prenatal exposure to the Dutch famine of 1944-1945 reduced postpartum maternal weight, birth weight, placental weight, length at birth, and head circumference at birth. These conclusions are based on maternities occurring in the famine area and exposed to famine during some part of gestation as compared both with maternities in nonfamine areas, and with maternities before and after the famine. Third trimester exposure accounted for the whole of the famine effects. Length of gestation was not affected by third trimester exposure, and did not mediate the effects on infant exposure, and did not m

Relationship of maternal and infant nutrition to infant growth.

A cohort of all infants born between January 1, 1969 and February 28, 1977 in four rural villages in Eastern Guatemala which were participating in a longitudinal project of nutrition and mental development was studied. As part of the study, prospective information on anthropometric measurements, morbidity, dietary intake and socioeconomic and cultural characteristics was collected. In addition, two types of food supplements were distributed: calorie and protein-calorie. Attendance at the feeding centers in each village and the amount of supplements consumed by children and pregnant and lactati

Changes in gut microbiota diversity and composition during feeding transitions in infants: A scoping review.

Infants experience significant changes in gut microbiota during the first year of life as they transition from exclusive milk consumption to solid foods. The purpose of this study is to explore how dietary changes in infancy influence gut microbiota composition and diversity. A scoping review was conducted using databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Science Direct, and ProQuest. English-language studies published between 2003 and 2023 were included if they focused on mothers and caregivers with children aged 0 to 23 months involved in Infant and Young Child Feeding practice

Burden and transmission of zoonotic foodborne disease in a rural community in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The foodborne transmission and human health impact of Salmonella and Campylobacter infections have rarely been evaluated at the population level in highly endemic settings. METHODS: A prospective 15-month cohort study of 127 infants and 119 elderly people was combined with animal and food surveillance to determine the incidence and severity of Salmonella and Campylobacter gastroenteritis in a comparatively prosperous rural community in Mexico. RESULTS: Salmonella and Campylobacter were isolated in up to 75% and 57%, respectively, of raw retail meat and in up to 4.5% of ready-to-e

Use of prick-tests in the screening of immediate allergy to protein: 16 cases.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to protein hydrolysates seem to be on the rise but screening is difficult because of the wide range of symptoms. The goal of our study was to improve the screening process by skin prick testing infants with an anaphylactic form of allergy to cow's milk. METHODS: We studied 92 infants who were allergic to cow's milk. The diagnosis was based on the results of skin prick tests, specific IgE assays, and oral food challenges. The skin prick tests were performed using a number of protein hydrolysate formulae and a synthetic amino acid-based formula available in France. RESULTS:

Breast-milk production and energy exchange in human lactation.

The milk production of one mother was determined post-partum for a period of 13 weeks, during which time breast milk was her infant's only source of food energy. The weight changes of both the mother and the male infant were recorded during this period. The food intake and activity pattern of the mother were also recorded for 4-week periods: at 2, 6, 10 weeks after birth and 2 weeks after the cessation of lactation, which was maintained for a period of 27 weeks. The infant regained his birth weight of 3310 g on the 14th day of life. His weight gain for the duration of the study, which averaged

Physical Growth Status and Feeding Methods of Chinese Infants With Cleft Lip With or Without Cleft Palate Under 1 Year of Age.

Objectives: Malnutrition is a characteristic feature of cleft lip with or without palate (CL/P). This study aims to retrospectively quantify the physical growth status, evaluate the feeding methods, and identify the possible correlation of CL/P types with growth failure. Methods: The length and weight of 508 infants with CL/P and 118 healthy infants were recorded at the date of admission. The weight-for-age (W/A), length-for-age (L/A), and body mass index-for-age (BMI) of the infants were calculated. Results: The L/A values were significantly lower in the infants with cleft lip (CL, 123 cases)

Human Milk as a Model for Next-Generation Infant Formula: Opportunities and Challenges.

Human milk (HM) is a dynamic biological system replete with functional components that support infant growth, development, and immune protection. HM is regarded as the optimal infant food; however, many infants rely on infant formula (IF) as their sole source of nutrition or as a supplement to HM. Although many ingredients have been added to IF over the past 30 y, it is not equivalent to HM in terms of composition or infant outcomes. Potential opportunities to improve IF composition include adding components extracted from the milk of other species, synthesized by precision fermentation, or pr…

[Primary Prevention of Food Allergies - Is It Feasible?].

The prevalence of food allergy is increasing in Western countries. In Israel, the estimated prevalence is 2-3% among young children. The rate of natural resolution ranges from 70-80% for milk and egg allergy, to 10-20% for nuts. Food allergy significantly impacts patients' lives, including growth impairment, reduced bone density, worse quality of life, and even increased risk for anxiety disorder. Although effective treatment options exist, they are associated with adverse reactions and require regular long-term consumption of the allergenic food to maintain desensitization. Consequently, a ma

Infant feeding practices in relation to iron status and other possible nutritional deficiencies in Pathumthani, Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common micronutrient deficiency worldwide and usually leads to impaired neurodevelopment. Appropriate introduction of complementary foods is mandatory for all infants to prevent iron insufficiency. We aimed to demonstrate feeding behaviors in relation to infant iron status and also identify potential concomitant nutrient inadequacies. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive study of infants 6-12 months old was performed at the Well Baby Clinic at Thammasat University Hospital, Pathumthani. Demographic data, feeding pr

Warm bodies, cool milk: conflicts in post partum food choice for Indochinese women in California.

The Federal Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children provides nutritious foods and dietary counselling to low income women and children with a medically certified nutritional risk. The Public Health Foundation, a large WIC agency in Los Angeles, observed declining breastfeeding rates among Indochinese participants. We interviewed 110 Cambodian, ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese WIC participants about their infant feeding decisions and experience. These women believed that formula was superior to breastmilk for a number of reasons, some related to the Asian humoral medical

The Impact of Complementary Feeding on Fecal Microbiota in Exclusively Breast-Fed Infants with Cystic Fibrosis (A Descriptive Study).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Early life gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in shaping immunity, metabolism, and overall health outcomes. This is relevant in healthy infants but may be even more crucial in infants with chronic devastating diseases, such as cystic fibrosis (CF). While the introduction of solid foods in healthy infants modifies the composition of colonic microbiota, less knowledge is available on those with CF. The aim of this descriptive observational study was to assess the composition of fecal microbiota in six exclusively breast-fed infants with CF, and then explore the changes in

Probiotics and prebiotics in pediatrics.

This clinical report reviews the currently known health benefits of probiotic and prebiotic products, including those added to commercially available infant formula and other food products for use in children. Probiotics are supplements or foods that contain viable microorganisms that cause alterations of the microflora of the host. Use of probiotics has been shown to be modestly effective in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in (1) treating acute viral gastroenteritis in healthy children; and (2) preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea in healthy children. There is some evidence that probio

Management of food allergies.

The mainstay of successful management of food allergy is the identification of the offending food(s), as verified by the elimination-challenge test. Dietary elimination is the most effective and inexpensive method, but its success depends on several factors. Initially, dietary elimination may need to be strict, but later certain patients may discover that they can tolerate limited quantities or certain preparations of the offending food without significant symptoms. In certain cases, provision of a substitute or a nutritional supplement may be needed. Food allergy in infants who are exclusivel

Starch Malabsorption in Infants.

Based on the developmental physiology of pancreatic amylase production, starch digestion in young infants was anticipated to be compromised whenever compared with that in older infants and toddlers. This appears to be the case, but with great variability among infants to digest starch. Evidence points to the importance of maltase-glucoamylase in young infants and its effect on starch digestion. These observations have critical importance for recommendations regarding the feeding of starch-containing foods to young infants.
