Privacy-protecting, reliable response data discovery using COVID-19 patient observations.

OBJECTIVE: To utilize, in an individual and institutional privacy-preserving manner, electronic health record (EHR) data from 202 hospitals by analyzing answers to COVID-19-related questions and posting these answers online. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a distributed, federated network of 12 health systems that harmonized their EHRs and submitted aggregate answers to consortia questions posted at https://www.covid19questions.org. Our consortium developed processes and implemented distributed algorithms to produce answers to a variety of questions. We were able to generate counts, descr

Drug overdose in the ED: a record linkage study examining emergency department ICD-10 coding practices in a cohort of people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity amongst people who inject drugs (PWID). Drug overdose surveillance typically relies on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding system, however its real world utilisation and the implications for surveillance have not been well characterised. This study examines the patterns of ICD-10 coding pertaining to drug overdoses within emergency departments for a cohort of known PWID. METHODS: Cohort data from 688 PWID was linked to statewide emergency department administrative data between January 2008 and Jun

Disaster victim investigation recommendations from two simulated mass disaster scenarios utilized for user acceptance testing CODIS 6.0.

Members of the National DNA Data Bank (NDDB) of Canada designed and searched two simulated mass disaster (MD) scenarios for User Acceptance Testing (UAT) of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) 6.0, developed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Justice. A simulated airplane MD and inland Tsunami MD were designed representing a closed and open environment respectively. An in-house software program was written to randomly generate DNA profiles from a mock Caucasian population database. As part of the UAT, these two MDs were searched separately using CODIS 6.0.

Carrier transport mechanisms of bistable memory devices fabricated utilizing core-shell CdSe/ZnSe quantum-dot/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrid nanocomposites.

Transmission electron microscopy images showed that conjugation between single core-shell CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was achieved through the complexation reaction. Current-voltage (I-V) measurements on Al/CdSe:MWCNT conjugated nanocomposite/indium-tin-oxide devices at 300 K showed that the on/off ratio of the current bistability was as large as about 10(4), which was significantly increased due to an enhancement of the carrier transfer efficiency between the CdSe/ZnSe QDs and the MWCNTs. Carrier transport mechanisms of the bistable memory

ICBS: a database of interactions between protein chains mediated by beta-sheet formation.

MOTIVATION: Interchain beta-sheet (ICBS) interactions occur widely in protein quaternary structures, interactions between proteins and protein aggregation. These interactions play a central role in many biological processes and in diseases ranging from AIDS and cancer to anthrax and Alzheimer's. RESULTS: We have created a comprehensive database of ICBS interactions that is updated on a weekly basis and allows entries to be sorted and searched by relevance and other criteria through a simple Web interface. We derive a simple ICBS index to quantify the relative contributions of the beta-ladders

Accessing wound-care information on the Internet: the implications for patients.

The Internet and the World Wide Web have revolutionised communication and provide a unique forum for the exchange of information. It has been proposed that the Internet has given the public more access to medical information resources and improved patient education. This study assessed the impact of the Internet on the availability of information on wound care management. The search phrases 'wound care', 'wound healing' and 'wounds' were analysed using a powerful Metacrawler search engine (www.go2net.com). Web site access was classified according to the target audience (wound-care specialists,

Ontology-Enriched Guidelines Retrieval for Complex Rheumatological Cases.

Large language models (LLMs) integrated with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) can enhance clinical decision support and triage. However, semantic retrieval often fails to capture the structured relationships of medical knowledge, especially in complex scenarios. This study explores the use of ontology-based knowledge graphs to improve retrieval, combining SNOMED CT and rheumatology guidelines within a graph database. Retrieval was evaluated on clinical queries using three configurations: embeddings-only, knowledge graph-only, and a hybrid approach. Results indicate that while embeddings su

Suicide among people treated for drug use disorders: a Danish national record-linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders are a major risk factor for suicide. However, less is known about specific risk factors for suicide in people with substance use disorders. METHODS: This population cohort study assessed suicide among people treated for drug use disorders in Denmark 2000-2010, and described risk factors for completed suicide. Data from 27,942 individuals enrolled in treatment were linked to national registers and matched with controls without drug use disorder and with (n = 138,136) or without psychiatric history (n = 1574). Competing risk regression was used to identify ri

Making the Connection: Using Videoconferencing to Increase Linkage to Care for Incarcerated Persons Living with HIV Post-release.

Incarcerated persons living with HIV (PLWH) have relatively high levels of HIV care engagement and antiretroviral therapy adherence during incarceration, but few are able to maintain these levels upon reentry into the community. In Louisiana, PLWH nearing release from prisons were offered video conferences with case managers housed in community based organizations aimed at facilitating linkage to care in the community. Of the 144 persons who received a video conference during the study period, 74.3% had linked to HIV care in the community within 90 days after release. Compared to the compariso

Predictors of Overdose Death Among High-Risk Emergency Department Patients With Substance-Related Encounters: A Data Linkage Cohort Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Persons with substance use disorders frequently utilize emergency department (ED) services, creating an opportunity for intervention and referral to addiction treatment and harm-reduction services. However, EDs may not have the appropriate tools to distinguish which patients are at greatest risk for negative outcomes. We link hospital ED and medical examiner mortality databases in one state to identify individual-level risk factors associated with overdose death among ED patients with substance-related encounters. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study linked Maryland state

A fatal review: Exploring how children's deaths are reported in the United States.

Child death reports are the leading data source used to orchestrate child fatality prevention policy. Therefore, the way in which child death is reported is crucial to how we sustain life. We sought to assess the systematic ways in which death is reported for children. Based on a qualitative analysis of medico-legal investigation reports collected from a medical examiner's office and a coroner's office, we examined several indicators of data completeness, quality, site organizational structure, and consistency. We found stark differences between the two sites, as well as issues regarding death
