The presence of invasive Anopheles stephensi has been confirmed from field studies in several urban, peri-urban and rural areas of Ethiopia. Recent studies have shown that these mosquitoes are resistant to common public health insecticides, namely pyrethroids (deltamethrin, permethrin, and alpha-cypermethrin), Carbamates (bendiocarb and propoxur), and organophosphates (pirimiphos-methyl). This study aimed to assess the susceptibility of populations of An. stephensi from Ethiopia to novel chemical insecticides recently recommended for vector control, namely, broflanilide (a meta-diamide targeti

Plague is a rodent-borne disease transmitted to humans by the bite of fleas infected with the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Flea control is a key part of the overall plague management strategy. Insecticide-based strategies are designed to reduce or eliminate fleas from the environment in order to stop the disease transmission cycle during outbreaks. Many efforts have been directed toward monitoring flea susceptibility to insecticides using standardized bioassay methods recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Several studies have reported the development of insecticide resistance in ve

BACKGROUND: In Peru, the information regarding sand fly vectors of leishmaniasis and bartonellosis in the Amazon region is limited. In this study, we carried out sand fly collections in Peruvian lowland and highland jungle areas using different trap type configurations and screened them for Leishmania and Bartonella DNA.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Phlebotomine sand flies were collected in Peruvian Amazon jungle and inter Andean regions using CDC light trap, UV and color LED traps, Mosquito Magnet trap, BG Sentinel trap, and a Shannon trap placed outside the houses. Leishmania spp. screen

Tsetse flies are vectors of parasites that cause diseases responsible for significant economic losses and health issues in sub-Saharan Africa, including sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in domestic animals. Efficient vector-control campaigns require good knowledge of the demographic parameters of the targeted populations. In the last decade, population genetics emerged as a convenient way to measure population densities and dispersal in tsetse flies. Here, by revealing a strong negative density-dependent dispersal in two dimensions, we suggest that control campaigns might unleash dispers

Glossina swynnertoni is a savannah tsetse that is largely confined to the Serengeti-Mara [a very small part of East Africa covering northern Tanzania (Arusha and Manyara regions and parts of Shinyanga and Mara regions) extending Maasai Mara ecosystem in southwestern Kenya]. Nevertheless, it is of great concern to human and animal health and is one of the top target tsetse species for eradication. To achieve this eradication objective, it is important to know about its behaviour so that the appropriate tools/measures especially the right traps can be applied against it. In this paper G. swynner

BACKGROUND: Control of gambiense sleeping sickness, a neglected tropical disease targeted for elimination by 2020, relies mainly on mass screening of populations at risk and treatment of cases. This strategy is however challenged by the existence of undetected reservoirs of parasites that contribute to the maintenance of transmission. In this study, performed in the Boffa disease focus of Guinea, we evaluated the value of adding vector control to medical surveys and measured its impact on disease burden.
METHODS: The focus was divided into two parts (screen and treat in the western part; scre

BACKGROUND: A dramatic increase of reported bedbug (Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus) infestations has been observed worldwide over the past decade. Bedbug infestations have also been detected across a wide range of travel accommodations, regardless of their comfort and hygiene levels. Travelers are increasingly exposed to the risks of bedbug bites, infestation of personal belongings, and subsequent contamination of newly visited accommodations and their homes.
METHODS: We searched Medline publications via the PubMed database. National bedbug recommendations, textbooks, newspapers, and

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) control in the Indian subcontinent is currently based on case detection and treatment, and on vector control using indoor residual spraying (IRS). The use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LN) has been postulated as an alternative or complement to IRS. Here we tested the impact of comprehensive distribution of LN on the density of Phlebotomus argentipes in VL-endemic villages.
METHODS: A cluster-randomized controlled trial with household P. argentipes density as outcome was designed. Twelve clusters from an ongoing LN clinical trial--three intervention

BACKGROUND: While three countries in South Asia decided to eliminate anthroponotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) by 2015, its control in other regions seems fraught with difficulties. Is there a scope for more effective VL control in the Americas where transmission is zoonotic? We reviewed the evidence on VL control strategies in Latin America-diagnosis, treatment, veterinary interventions, vector control-with respect to entomological and clinical outcomes.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We searched the electronic databases of MEDLINE, LILACS, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Tr

Experiments have established that the pyrethroids deltamethrin and cypermethrin (decis and cimbush) may be used in the Siberian natural plague foci for not only emergency, but also early prevention of plague. This substantially expands and simplifies the possibility of organizing disinfection actions and reduces the cost of treatments. The findings are determined by the specific features of the biology and ecology of fleas inhabiting in the natural plague foci of the souslik type in a continental climate area. The specific features include the coincidence of preimago stages and the larger prop

Cytotaxonomic identifications of larvae of members of the Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera: Simuliidae) complex collected in forest zones of southeast Ghana and southwest Togo between 1977 and 1996 showed that the Djodji form of Simulium sanctipauli Vajime & Dunbar, a vector of onchocerciasis, was eliminated in 1988 by larvicide operations conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa. No members of the form were identified amongst 997 larvae collected up to 8 years after systematic control operations began in February 1988. The resul

Vectorial transmission of Chagas disease has been strongly reduced in most parts of the Southern Cone countries of South America, except in the Gran Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Given periodical interruptions of the vector control programmes in the endemic region of the Gran Chaco of Argentina, the vectorial transmission of the disease has been increasing during the last years. From the beginning of 2004, the provincial Ministry of Health of La Rioja, Argentina, started a vector control programme to cover the rural houses of the Los Llanos area in the southwestern area of

In the last 20 years, despite the known underestimation of cases, Brazil registered a marked increase in the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis. The main goal of this review is to reflect on some aspects of this zoonosis in Brazil and also to encourage the discussion in order to find more viable, effective and affordable strategies to be implemented by the Brazilian Leishmaniasis Control Program. The current situation of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil might be seen as a paradox: the most important aspects of the disease are known, but so far the control of this disease has not yet been achi

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were captured in an area of Argentina endemic for American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). A total of 44,944 flies were collected during a 130-wk interepidemic period from 1990 through 1993. These sand flies included Lutzomyia neivai (Pinto) (97.8%), Lutzomyia migonei (Franca) (1.2%), Lutzomyia cortelezzii (Brèthes) (0.8%), Lutzomyia shannoni (Dyar) (0.1%), and Lutzomyia punctigeniculata (Floch and Abonnenc) (0.1%). Lutzomyia neivai was more abundant in secondary forests and peridomestic environments associated with human cases than in primary fore

This study was conducted to survey larval breeding habitats and to obtain larval abundance during the dry period covering all 5 geographical zones of Thailand. Our results indicated Aedes aegypri is prevalent all over the country, whereas Aedes albopictus is more restricted to the remote area of the south. Water storage containers, especially water jars, served as a main larval breeding habitats of Ae. aegypti, whereas broken cans and plastic containers are considered primary breeding sites for Ae. alpopictus during the dry period. In addition, Aedes larval indices, container index (CI), house

Separate black-tailed prairie dog, Cynomys ludovicianus (Ord), towns on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Colorado, were treated with technical pyriproxyfen (Nylar) spray, powder, and oral bait. The treatments were applied to reduce relative abundance of the plague vector Oropsylla hirsuta (Baker). Because pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone analog, we were also concerned with the effects of the treatments on nontarget arthropods, which is the focus of this study. Pitfall traps and sweep net sampling were used to measure relative abundance of arthropod populations pre- and po

Onchocerciasis is endemic on the island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea, where it is transmitted by the 'Bioko form' of the Simulium damnosum complex, a cytospecies unique to the island. To determine the distribution of vector breeding, three dry season and two wet season expeditions were made in 1989, 1996 and 1997, and 226 of the island's 247 rivers (91.5%) were visited. Of these 226 rivers, 130 (58%) were flowing during the dry season, forty-five (20%) supported aquatic stages of Simuliidae of any species and twenty-five (11%) contained larvae or pupae of the S. damnosum complex. The twenty-one

Between 1984 and 1989, the onchocerciasis-vector control zone on the pilot area of San Vicente Pacaya, Guatemala, which had been subject to experimental control since 1979, was extended from 91.3 to 148.6 km2. Temephos was used as a larvicide against Simulium ochraceum s.l. the target species. As a new strategy, only breeding sites with water discharges of 0.1-10 litres/s were treated, every 2 weeks. This approach provided a substantial reduction in effort, number of treated sites, time and cost. To assess the effect of the temephos, nine sites were selected in which standardized collections o
