BACKGROUND: Insomnia is associated with various systemic conditions; however, its relationship with structural dental outcomes-particularly tooth wear and tooth fracture-has not been well defined.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between clinically diagnosed insomnia and the incidence of tooth wear and fracture in a nationwide population-based cohort.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. Adults aged ≥ 20 years who underwent health screening between 2011 and 2014 were included. Insomnia was defined using the Internatio

PURPOSE: To determine the extent to which there were disparities in access to recommended preventive oral services between US-based children living in rural versus urban areas.
METHODS: The study used cross-sectional, parent-reported National Survey of Children's Health data from 2022, which is the most current year of publicly available data when analyses were performed. Inclusion criteria included all children from the ages of 2 through 17. The US Census Bureau definition of rural was used to guide the analyses. Survey procedures within Stata were used to build the multiple regression model

PURPOSE: Perceived social status (PSS), a measure of social status, reflects cumulative lifetime effects of an individual's relative social status based on resources and lived experiences. PSS is hypothesized to better capture social status compared to traditional measures of socioeconomic status (SES) (i.e., education, occupation, and income). Although recognized as a predictor of health-related morbidity and mortality, limited research has explored PSS and oral health. This study investigated PSS as a predictor of self-reported oral health among low-income adults.
METHODS: In spring 2018, a

OBJECTIVE: Preventive care services are important to prevent or delay complications associated with diabetes. We report trends in receipt of six American Diabetes Association-recommended preventive care services during 2008-2020.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used 2008-2020 data from the cross-sectional Medical Expenditures Panel Survey to calculate the proportion of U.S. adults ≥18 years of age with diagnosed diabetes who reported receiving preventive care services, overall and by subpopulation (n = 25,616). We used joinpoint regression to identify trends during 2008-2019. The six services

INTRODUCTION: Tooth loss is associated with poor oral hygiene. During insufficient oral sanitation, focal infection and inflammation can occur and these reactions may induce systemic inflammation. Systemic inflammatory reaction may be related to the degeneration of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. We hypothesized that tooth loss is related to increased risk of new-onset Parkinson's disease.
METHODS: Between 2003 and 2006, we included 153,165 participants from the national health insurance system-health screening cohort in Korea. The incidence of new-onset Parkinson's disease was defi

Neighborhood-based social capital - defined as resources within neighborhood social networks - is a potential contributor to adolescent oral health, but mechanisms that link the two are not well elucidated. We evaluated the potential mediating role of neighborhood, household, and individual oral health risk factors in the neighborhood social capital-tooth decay relationship. We collected cross-sectional data from 331 Medicaid-enrolled adolescents (ages 12-18 years) and one of their caregivers from 73 census tracts (neighborhoods) in three counties in Oregon, U.S.A in 2015 and 2016. INTRODUCTION: Dental implants are widely utilized to manage both partially and completely edentulous older patients. However, such patients often present with multiple systemic diseases and may be at an increased risk of complications before and after implant surgery. Nevertheless, population-level data on systemic diseases and medication use in these patients remain limited.
METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional study analyzed 36 957 patients who underwent 43 171 insurance-covered implant surgeries between 2014 and 2019 using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohor

OBJECTIVE: The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with spillover impacts on 5 million children with an incarcerated parent. Children exposed to parental incarceration (PI) have suboptimal health care access, use, and outcomes in adulthood compared to their peers. However, little is known about their access and utilization during childhood. We evaluated relationships between PI and health care use and access throughout childhood and adolescence.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Periodontal disease, initiated by dental biofilm and influenced by various local and systemic factors, includes stress as a potential contributor to its progression. Despite associations with severe forms like acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, a comprehensive large-sample study linking stress to periodontal disease is lacking. This study aims to investigate the relationship between mental health and periodontal disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Leveraging data (secondary dataset) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011-2012 and N

Background/Objectives: Undernutrition increases the mortality risk in older persons requiring long-term care; further, it is associated with oral functions such as swallowing and chewing. Moreover, occlusion affects oral function and is crucially involved in nutritional intake. The present study aimed to examine the association between the number of molar occlusions and undernutrition according to body mass index (BMI) in older persons requiring long-term care. Methods: Japanese older persons requiring long-term care were categorized based on BMI (<20 kg/m2 vs. 20 kg/m2). We examined the assoc

DATA SOURCES AND SEARCH STRATEGY: Seven databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, Cochrane and Google Scholar) were searched up to the third week in June 2022. Keyword search terms were based on four key concepts: oral health, primary health, strategies, and integration.
STUDY SELECTION: Peer-reviewed studies that evaluated any strategies to integrate oral health into primary care (e.g., guidelines, policies, workforce programmes) were included in the review. Eligibility was restricted to papers written in English language. Papers in non-primary care settings or which did not desc

IMPORTANCE: Medicaid provides comprehensive dental coverage to more than 37 million children in the US and plays a central role in reducing barriers to care and improving oral health outcomes. Under the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), many of these children may be at risk of losing their Medicaid coverage.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate changes in oral health outcomes and health care costs associated with projected Medicaid coverage loss among US children.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A stochastic decision-analytic microsimulation model was developed to project changes in oral health

With the introduction of conebeam computed tomography (CBCT) in the early 2000s, oral and maxillofacial radiology fully entered the modern world of 3-dimensional (3D) radiographic imaging. Although conventional or medical computed tomography (CT) had been available since the 1970s, with few exceptions, it had not been widely used in dentistry. In the early days of conventional CT, the machines were limited in number, restricting their use to only the most beneficial of purposes--for example, imaging of the brain. The cost of a CT examination was also prohibitive. For these reasons, the modalit

OBJECTIVES: Community water fluoridation (CWF) is a widely used population-level intervention for preventing dental caries. However, CWF discontinuation is increasingly debated globally, often without a comprehensive synthesis of the subsequent clinical, service-related, economic, and equity implications. We aimed to systematically map and synthesize empirical evidence regarding dental health and service-based outcomes following CWF cessation.
METHODS: For this scoping review, we searched 17 bibliographic databases and grey literature from inception through Oct 31, 2025. Eligible studies repo

IMPORTANCE: While large oral health disparities remain by race and ethnicity among children, the associations of race, ethnicity, and mediating factors with oral health outcomes are poorly characterized. Identifying the pathways that explain these disparities would be critical to inform policies to effectively reduce them.
OBJECTIVE: To measure racial and ethnic disparities in the risk of developing tooth decay and quantify relative contributions of factors mediating the observed disparities among US children.

The edentulous maxilla presents diverse and complex rehabilitation problems for the clinician that are often not addressed with a conventional removable appliance. Implant therapy, although revolutionizing the management of the edentulous mandible, has yielded less than favourable treatment outcomes in the maxilla. Poor bone quality and small bone volume in the maxilla, at the time of implant surgery has been associated with more implant and prosthesis failure. Bone grafting appears to improve the survival rate of implants in the atrophic maxilla and many studies have been published outlining

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains a significant public health problem for children with continuing calls to incorporate oral health under the Universal Healthcare domain (UHC). However, there is little knowledge on the variations in the coverage, financing, and access to child oral healthcare across Europe.
METHODS: This inter-country comparative analysis provides a detailed description and mapping of publicly funded child oral health coverage across six European countries: Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Scotland, and Spain. A multiple case study approach was adopted encompassing two str

BACKGROUND: Dental visits represent an opportunity to identify and assist patients with unhealthy substance use, but little is known about how dentists are addressing patients' use of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. The authors surveyed dentists to learn about the role their practices might play in providing substance-use screening and interventions.
METHODS: The authors distributed a 41-item Web-based survey to all 210 dentists active in the Practitioners Engaged in Applied Research and Learning Network, a practice-based research network. The questionnaire assessed dental practices' poli
