Sera from 52 patients with psoriasis and 106 controls were tested for IFN-tau, IFN-alpha 2 and TNF-alpha in ELISA and for total IFN activity using an infectivity inhibition micromethod. Psoriasis patients had lower serum levels of IFN-tau than had the controls: median 0.10 ng/ml vs. 0.16 ng/ml (p = 0.01). The highest median serum IFN-tau levels were in patients with peripherally spreading psoriasis, 0.10 ng/ml, and acute guttate psoriasis, 0.09 ng/ml. Fourteen patients with metastatic carcinoid tumors were treated with recombinant interferon alpha-2b at a dosage of 3-4 x 10(6) IU s.c. daily or every second day. No objective tumor regression was observed. Six out of 8 patients with carcinoids of the ileum and the caecum showed stable disease lasting for a median of 25 months (range 4-57). The efficacy and tolerability of rIFN-alpha has been evaluated in 17 selected patients with symptomatic polycythaemia vera, diagnosed according to the PRV Study Group criteria. Antiviral therapy with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and pegylated IFN-alpha (PEG-IFN-alpha) for chronic hepatitis C (HCV)-infected kidney recipients remains controversial. Regional Metastatic Melanoma has a relatively high mortality rate. Adjuvant interferon-alpha (IFN-α) has been shown to improve disease-free survival, post-resection. Cardiotoxicity associated with IFN-α use has been described previously in the literature, but here we describe the first case of pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade secondary to IFN-α 2b treatment of melanoma. Clinicians should be aware of this potentially lethal complication and the possible acuity of its onset.
