BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital anomaly of the sternum and anterior chest wall, which occurs about 3-4 times more often in boys than girls [1]. Although most patients do not report physical symptoms as cardiovascular and respiratory problems, they show a loss of self-esteem and a poor self-image. There exist very rare data about psychological state before the OP compared with data afterwards. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine psychological changes in body-image, self-concept and mental exposure in patients with pectus excavatum, who had undergone the Nu

The Role of Income on the Relationship Between the Brazilian Cash Transfer Program (Programa Bolsa Família) and Intimate Partner Violence: Evidence From a Multigroup Path Analysis.

Several initiatives are being proposed to reduce the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) worldwide. Actions aimed at women's economic empowerment through income transfer programs are one of those. Still, the literature on their impact is scarce and controversial. This study attempts to shed some light on this matter assessing whether the Brazilian Conditional Cash Transfer Program (Programa Bolsa Família [PBF]) is a protective factor for psychological and physical IPV against women in families of different levels of income. This is a cross-sectional, household-based study conducted in

"Damaging what wasn't damaged already": psychological tension and antiretroviral adherence among HIV-infected methadone-maintained drug users.

Active drug use among HIV-infected persons is associated with poor adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and suboptimal treatment outcomes. To understand adherence experiences among HIV-infected drug users, we conducted semistructured interviews with 15 participants in a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of directly observed HAART delivered in methadone maintenance clinics. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. We identified negative and positive psychological themes associated with both drug use and adherence. Participants desc

Depressive symptoms among women with an abnormal mammogram.

An abnormal mammography finding constitutes a stressful event that may increase vulnerability by developing or intensifying pre-existing psychological morbidity. We evaluated depressive symptoms using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview among women of four ethnic groups who had an abnormal mammography result controlling for the effect of demographic, psychosocial and medical factors on recent onset of depressive symptoms. Telephone surveys were conducted among women aged 40-80 years recruited from four clinical sites in the San Francisco Bay Area after receiving a screening mammog

Exploring psychological abuse in childhood: II. Association with other abuse and adult clinical depression.

A new retrospective interview assessment of childhood psychological abuse, an extension to the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse (CECA) instrument, is described in a companion article (Moran, Bifulco, Ball, Jacobs, & Benaim, 2002). The purpose of the present article is to examine the relationship of childhood psychological abuse to other adverse childhood experiences and to major depression and suicidal behavior in adult life. Childhood experience and lifetime disorder were assessed retrospectively in a high-risk, community series of London women (n = 204). Psychological abuse from parent

Attachment representations to parents and emotional-behavioral problems: A comparison between children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and healthy children in middle childhood.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is one of the most demanding chronic diseases for children and their families, since controlling diabetes involves a process of co-regulation with attachment figures. However, there is insufficient evidence in middle childhood on psychological mechanisms involved that might complicate the adaptation of these children. Therefore, 106 children (N = 31 with T1D and N = 75 as matched healthy group [HG]) aged 8 to 13 were assessed using the Child Attachment Interview, the Child Behavior Checklist, and the measure of glycated hemoglobin. Results showed that insecure T1

Psychological Symptoms in Late Adolescence and Long-Term Risk of Suicide and Suicide Attempt.

Mental disorders in the general population are associated with increased risk of suicidality, but less is known about the independent predictive ability of self-reported psychological symptoms. We followed 49,321 screened and interviewed Swedish conscripts through 36-year follow-up to test whether psychological symptoms predicted suicide and hospitalization for suicide attempts. There were 619 suicides and 1,230 suicide attempts during the follow-up period. After excluding subjects with any psychiatric diagnoses (n = 5,691, 12%) and controlling for other psychological symptoms, severe symptoms
