Cultures of a hemolytic streptococcus isolated from a human case of erysipelas were tested for ability to produce lesions by injecting various amounts intradermally in shaved rabbits. Severe lesions could be developed at will in this way despite the fact that intravenous or intraperitoneal inoculations of large doses of the cultures failed to kill. BACKGROUND: Penicillins and other β-lactam antibiotics are the most common elicitors of allergic drug reaction. However, data on the pattern of clinical reaction types elicited by specific β-lactams are scarce and inconsistent. We aimed to determine patterns of β-latam allergy, i.e. the association of a clinical reaction type with a specific β-lactam antibiotic.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated data from 800 consecutive patients with suspected β-lactam hypersensitivity over a period of 11 years in a single German Allergy Center.

Passive transfer experiments in cholinergic urticaria were carried out from 16 patients to a Macaca cymnologous monkey. Intravenous Evans blue dye was used to demonstrate vascular permeability. The mechanisms involved in adverse reactions to local anaesthetic (LA) agents are poorly understood. True IgE-mediated reactions appear to be rare. We report a patient with panhypogammaglobulinemia who developed anaphylactoid reactions to two different LAs (lignocaine and procaine), associated with positive intradermal skin tests to these agents as well as prilocaine, despite absent detectable IgE in the serum and a negative RAST test to procaine. We conclude that direct histamine release induced by LA is likely to be the major mechanism in this case.

Steers sensitized or infected with Taenia saginata exhibited similar delayed-type dermal hypersensitivity (DTH) responses after intradermal inoculation with T. saginata or T. crassiceps skin test antigens. A severe case of solar urticaria induced by UVA with positive results of passive transfer test (3 recipients) and reverse passive transfer test (2 recipients) is reported. Desensitization treatment by irradiation of particular parts of the body with UVA and UVB (to accelerate tanning) was fully effective.
