This study examined the effectiveness of a strategic dosing scheme in lowering the incidence of fasciolosis on a mixed dry-stock farm and in maintaining the reduced incidence following a reduction in dosing intensity. Two neighbouring farms with a history of chronic fluke disease were selected, the strategic dosing scheme being implemented on one (the trial farm) while the other (the control farm) continued to treat according to its normal practice. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, pattern, and severity of injuries resulting from participation in amateur boxing.
DESIGN: A prospective 5-month survey of injuries which occurred during competitive amateur boxing and training.
SETTING: Amateur boxing competitions held in Dublin between November 1992 and March 1993, and the six largest amateur boxing clubs in Dublin.
PARTICIPANTS: All the competitors in the tournaments and the > 16 year old members of the boxing clubs.

A database of condemnation data from abattoirs was combined with a meteorological database to investigate the relationship between the prevalence of pleurisy and pneumonia in pigs in Northern Ireland and prevailing weather conditions. Between 1969 and 1989 three significant trends were found in the occurrence of condemnations due to pleurisy and pneumonia, and significant correlation coefficients were found between the percentage condemnations and air temperature.

Advances continue to be made in the treatment of the undescended testis, and treatment recommendations are continually changing. We reviewed 543 patients admitted for treatment of undescended testes in the 10-year period 1977 to 1986. The side and position of the testis were recorded, the patient's age at operation and the procedure carried out. The presence of an associated inguinal hernia was noted. A novel substitution has been characterized in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene that is linked exclusively to mutant haplotype 6, which is prevalent in southern Europe but rare in northern and eastern Europe. A survey of 77 normal and 326 diarrhoeic foals in Britain and Ireland from 1987 to 1989 revealed a significantly higher prevalence of Group A rotaviruses and Aeromonas hydrophila in diarrhoeic foals. In 1967 the first patient in Northern Ireland commenced growth hormone treatment for short stature. By the end of December 1988 a total of 89 patients had been treated. This paper is based on a survey of graduates from the B.Sc. in Nursing studies at the New University of Ulster (now the University of Ulster). Six cohorts, those entering between 1975 and 1980, were sent a postal questionnaire. The results cover the careers of these graduates and also describe their problems and their aspirations. The findings confirm those of other studies in relation to the clinical orientation of graduate nurses. Tissue typing (HLA-A, -B and -DR) was carried out on 92 patients with coeliac disease (CD) and on a further 71 first degree relatives of 13 of these patients. Results of antigen frequencies in unrelated patients and segregation analysis in families shows that HLA-DR3 but not HLA-DR7 is positively associated with CD. A survey of clinical babesiosis was carried out in an area serviced by a veterinary practice in Oldcastle, Co Meath. Data were collected from the day books of the practice from 1970 to 1981 and from questionnaires and visits to farmers. Clinical incidence ranged between 3.2 and 4.9 per cent, which was very high compared with figures from Northern Ireland and Devon. Mortality rates were found to range from 7.3 to 14.5 per cent. HLA, A, B, and DR typing was done on seven of 10 patients with lymphoma, and six patients with carcinoma, all of whom had a flat small intestinal mucosa. Sixty-nine per cent (nine of 13) had HLA B8 and 71% (five of seven) had DR3.
