BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the potential protective effects of Ankaferd blood stopper (ABS) in an experimental obstructive jaundice (OJ) model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 26 female rats, which were divided into 3 groups. The sham group, consisting of 10 rats, (group 1) only received solely laparotomy. In the control group, consisting of 8 rats, (group 2), ligation was applied to the biliary tract and no treatment was implemented. In the treatment group, consisting of 8 rats, (group 3), following ligation of biliary tract, 0.5 mL/day ABS was given for 10 days. Liver tissue and

An 82-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma presented with upper abdominal pain, vomiting, and jaundice. He had been taking a standard lenvatinib dose for three months. Although acute cholangitis was suggested, imaging studies failed to detect the biliary obstruction site. An endoscopic examination following discontinuation of lenvatinib and aspirin revealed multiple duodenal ulcers, one of which was formed on the ampulla of Vater and causing cholestasis. Endoscopic biliary drainage and antibiotics improved concomitant Enterobacter cloacae bacteremia. Ulcer healing was confirmed after rab

Obstructive jaundice is a common clinical manifestation of malignant lesions adjacent to extrahepatic bile duct, ampulla or pancreatic head. Animal experiments and some clinical observations have demonstrated that preoperative biliary drainage could improve liver function as well as reduce endotoxemia, thereby reducing the incidence of perioperative complications. However, a number of randomized, controlled studies have found that preoperative biliary drainage failed to improve prognosis or reduce the incidence of perioperative complications; in contrast, it might increase the incidence of com

Schwannoma is a tumor derived from Schwann cells which usually arises in the upper extremities, trunk, head and neck, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, pelvis, and peritoneum. However, it can arise in the gastrointestinal tract, including biliary tract. We present a 24-year-old male patient with obstructive jaundice, whose investigation with computed tomography abdomen showed focal wall thickening in the common hepatic duct, difficult to differentiate with hilar adenocarcinoma. He was diagnosed intraoperatively schwannoma of common bile duct and treated with local resection. The patient recovered

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There was no data about endocrine cells in the extrahepatic bile duct in secondary cholangitis due to obstructive jaundice. The aim of the present study is to investigate immunohistochemically the endocrine cell types in the lower part of the human common bile duct in biopsy samples, collected during drainage because of complete or incomplete obstruction, caused mainly by stones. We explained the presence of various hormone-producing endocrine cells in this region with the regulation of physiological and pathological processes there.
METHODOLOGY: We used light and electron mi

We report a severely infected necrotizing pancreatitis managed with hand-assisted laparoscopic necrosectomy along with a review of the relevant literature. Minimally invasive necrosectomy has been shown to be efficient and advantageous in managing necrotizing pancreatitis. Multiple techniques have been advocated over the last decade. Laparoscopic pancreatic debridement is a feasible option for some patients with necrotizing pancreatitis. We selected hand-assisted laparoscopic pancreatic necrosectomy, which has gained some favor over open necrosectomy because of the morbidity and mortality asso

BACKGROUND: Liver involvement, including elevated direct-reacting bilirubin levels, is common in patients with sickle cell disease. Fifty to seventy percent of sickle cell patients have pigmented gallstones due to precipitation of unconjugated bilirubin, and cholelithiasis or choledocholithiasis are common complications. The highest prevalence of these complications occurs in patients with Gilbert's syndrome because of the combined effect of increased bilirubin production and reduced bilirubin-diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme activity. Cholelithiasis is also a common complication in

The authors present a case of papillary adenoma of the extrahepatic biliary tract presenting as obstructive jaundice. The diagnosis was based on the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and above all cholangioscopy findings. The patient was treated by bile duct resection with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy. Adenoma of the bile duct is a rare entity. Only a few cases have been described in the world literature so far.

Recently, treatment by taxane regimen for advanced gastric cancer as second-line chemotherapy has been increasingly reported. A 58-year-old man underwent distal gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer on November 25, 2002. There was permeation through the duodenum side, and a Billroth II operation was done for repair. Although a relapse was not clear from the picture image, due to the tumor marker increase since July 2004, chemotherapy using TS-1 100 mg/day was given. On February 2005, liver dysfunction and obstructive jaundice appeared, and the patient was diagnosed with a recurrence in the h

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of oral ferric ammonium citrate solution as a gastrointestinal contrast agent in diagnosing low-level obstructive jaundice.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients who were suspected of low-level obstructive jaundice were performed with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and conventional MRI before and after the administration of oral ferric ammonium citrate solution. The diagnostic accuracy for evaluating the site and the cause of obstruction was compared with other diagnostic modalities.
RESULTS: The image qualities of single-slice and multi-slice MRCP

Malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) consists a rare neoplasm, developing in small intestine and stomach. The presenting manifastations include weakness, weight loss, nausea, melena and anaemia. The present case refers to a 65 years old female patient with a GIST of the ampulla of Vater presenting with obstructive jaundice. Diagnosis was achieved pre-operatively by biopsies collected through diagnostic ERCP. The tumour was locally excised, with preservation of the ampulla. The histological analysis suggested low grade GIST positive for both CD 117 (c-kit) and CD34. Two years after t

CONTEXT: Obstructive jaundice due to lymphoma is very rare. It may be difficult to distinguish between this condition and a large number of causes of extrahepatic bile duct obstruction, even by endoscopic retrograde cholangiography. Its prognosis is poor. Combined chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy with bile duct drainage is a therapeutic option.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of obstructive jaundice as the initial presentation of Hodgkin's disease. After chemotherapy and endoscopic bile duct stenting, it was noted that the enlarged lymph nodes, jaundice and bile duct dilation disappeared.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the extrahepatic bile duct presenting as obstructive jaundice is an extremely rare disease. At this writing, a review of the medical literature disclosed 17 reported cases of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma arising from the extrahepatic bile duct. We, herein, report an additional case of obstructive jaundice caused by primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the common bile duct, in a 21-year-old woman. Our patient showed clinical evidence of obstructive jaundice, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated

This retrospective study in eight surgically treated patients with obstructive jaundice due to biliary tumor thrombus in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was performed to evaluate the role of surgical intervention. All biliary tumor thrombi were confirmed preoperatively or intraoperatively. Only two manifested intraluminal biliary obstructions due to a primary tumor that had not been found preoperatively. The operative procedures included hepatectomy with removal of the biliary tumor thrombus (n=3), hepatectomy combined with extrahepatic bile duct resection (n=1), thrombectomy thr

A 78-year-old man admitted with clinical jaundice and pelvic pain had a total bilirubin level of 6.56 mg/dL, an alkaline phosphatase level of 855 U/L, and a prostate specific antigen (PSA) level of 9996 ng/mL. A computed tomogram demonstrated marked retroperitoneal, peripancreatic, periceliac, and periaortic lymphadenopathy. A bone scan revealed increased radiolabeled technetium uptake in the pelvis, vertebral column, parietooccipital region, ribs, and appendiceal skeleton. A biopsy of one pelvic lesion revealed metastatic prostate cancer. This man's obstructive jaundice and bone pain had a dr

Benign, non-parasitic liver cysts are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally by abdominal ultrasound or CT scan. We present the case of a 68-year-old patient who showed obstructive jaundice due to a hemorrhagic liver cyst compressing the choledochal duct. Due to the location of the cyst in the porta hepatis with partial compression of central liver vessels and the meanwhile organized hematoma, operative therapy was preferred in order to prevent secondary complications such as portal vein thrombosis and to exclude a malignant neoplasm.
