Molecular epidemiology of human rhinovirus infections in Kilifi, coastal Kenya.

This study reports pediatric surveillance over 3 years for human rhinovirus (HRV) at the District Hospital of Kilifi, coastal Kenya. Nasopharyngeal samples were collected from children presenting at outpatient clinic with no signs of acute respiratory infection, or with signs of upper respiratory tract infection, and from children admitted to the hospital with lower respiratory tract infection. Samples were screened by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR) and classified further to species by nucleotide sequencing of the VP4/VP2 junction. Of 441 HRV posit…

Rift Valley fever outbreak in livestock in Kenya, 2006-2007.

We analyzed the extent of livestock involvement in the latest Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak in Kenya that started in December 2006 and continued until June 2007. When compared with previous RVF outbreaks in the country, the 2006-07 outbreak was the most extensive in cattle, sheep, goats, and camels affecting thousands of animals in 29 of 69 administrative districts across six of the eight provinces. This contrasted with the distribution of approximately 700 human RVF cases in the country, where over 85% of these cases were located in four districts; Garissa and Ijara districts in Northeaste…

Communication for HIV/AIDS prevention in Kenya: social-cultural considerations.

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic is spreading fast in Africa in spite of the various efforts and resources put in place to prevent it. In Kenya, reproductive health programs have used the mass media and other communication interventions to inform and educate the public about the disease and to promote behavior change and healthy sexual practices. This effort has led to a discrepancy between awareness and behavioral change among people of reproductive age. In this article I examine the discrepancy in Kenya from a communications perspective addressing social cultural and r…

Interactions between schistosomiasis and human immunodeficiency virus in Western Kenya.

For the past ten years, we have been exploring the relationship between schistosomiasis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) and how coinfection with both agents may affect the pathology and progression of each infection. To date, given the systems we have examined, the effects of HIV-1 on schistosomiasis have been more profound than the effects of schistosomiasis on HIV-1 progression. Additional key questions with important public health implications remain unanswered, but hopefully not unanswerable.

Preliminary analysis of Nacholapithecus scapula and clavicle from Nachola, Kenya.

The Miocene ape Nacholapithecus is known from rather complete skeletons; some of them preserve the shoulder joint, identified by three scapulae and one clavicle. Comparisons made with other Miocene and living apes ( Proconsul, Equatorius, Ugandapithecus) suggest that the mobility of the scapulohumeral joint was important, and scapular features such as the morphology and position of the spine and the morphology of the acromion and axillary border resemble those of climbing arboreal primates except for chimpanzees, gorillas, or orang-utans. From the size of the scapula (male Nasalis size), it is

Under-diagnosis of smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis in Nairobi, Kenya.

SETTING: Nairobi City Council Chest Clinic, Nairobi, Kenya. OBJECTIVE: To determine if under-reading of sputum smears is a contributing factor in the disproportionate increase in smear-negative tuberculosis in Nairobi, Kenya. METHODOLOGY: Between October 1997 and November 1998, patients fulfilling the local programme definition of smear-negative presumed pulmonary tuberculosis were enrolled in the study. Two further sputum specimens were collected for examination in a research laboratory by fluorescence microscopy. RESULTS: Of 163 adult subjects enrolled, 55% were seropositive for the human…

Genotypic analysis of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica Serovar typhi, Kenya.

We report the emergence in Kenya during 1997-1999 of typhoid fever due to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and cotrimoxazole. Genotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of XbaI-digested chromosomal DNA yielded a single cluster. The multidrug-resistant S. Typhi were related to earlier drug- susceptible isolates but were unrelated to multidrug-resistant isolates from Asia.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania aethiopica, on Mount Elgon, Kenya.

A survey of cutaneous leishmaniasis was carried out on the slopes of Mount Elgon, Kenya, including a detailed study of two villages in which cases were known to occur. The disease appeared to be restricted to altitudes between 1750 and 1900 metres, which coincides with an escarpment region. Vector sandflies were not found in houses and transmission appeared to be predominantly associated with caves found in the escarpment region. The parasites which were isolated were identified as Leishmania aethiopica.

Human cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania donovani s.l. in Kenya.

Our laboratory is characterizing Leishmania stabilates and isolates from active leishmaniasis cases. Smears and cultures from aspirates made on different dates from a single lesion on the bridge of the nose of an 18 years old Kenyan male from Nyandarua District contained Leishmania. The isolates, NLB-271 and NLB-271-IA, were characterized by cellulose acetate electrophoresis (CAE) using 20 enzyme systems and by Southern analysis using 2 deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probes (pDK10 and pDK20) from a Dakar strain of L. major (MHOM/SN/00/DK1) and a third probe, p7-059 from L. infantum strain ITMAP-2…

Visceral leishmaniasis and malaria prevalence in West Pokot District, Kenya.

The prevalence of visceral leishmaniasis and malaria in the human population of West Pokot district of Kenya was studied in 1986. A total of 2139 people was proportionately screened for the two diseases according to four age categories (0-4, 5-14, 15-44 and greater than 45 years). Diagnostic methods included the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Leishmanin skin test for visceral leishmaniasis, and parasitological examination for malaria. The epidemiological value of the spleen rate was evaluated in relation to visceral leishmaniasis and malaria endemicity. A general decline of infe…

Clinical pattern of extra-uterine gestation in peri-urban Kenya.

One hundred and sixty five cases of extra-uterine pregnancy (EP) were managed in Thika District in peri-urban Kenya between January 1985 and June 1988, giving an incidence of 66:10,000 deliveries. 55.8% of the patients were in the age group 23-27 years, and 88.5% were para 0-2. 78.8% of the extra-uterine pregnancies were ruptured at the time of diagnosis. Paracentesis was performed in 126 cases with 13.5% false negatives. There were seven false positive paracentesis. All the false positives had conditions that would probably have required surgical intervention in any case. There were two patie…

The Saradidi, Kenya, rural health development programme: retrospective demographic analysis.

A census was done in Saradidi, Kenya from 1980 to 1982 as part of a community-based health development programme. The population was 42,755 (excluding 39 persons of unknown age or sex); 17.1% were less than five years old, 46.9% were below age 15, 4.7% were age 65 years or older and 19.7% were women in the reproductive years (age 15 to 44 years). The sex ratio was 86 males per 100 females due principally to migration of adult males for work. The mean number of persons per household was 4.0 and the mean village population was 764. The singulate mean age of marriage for men was 27.0 years and fo…

High-dose sodium stibogluconate treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Kenya.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania aethiopica usually responds poorly to conventional doses of pentavalent antimonial drugs. We treated three patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis acquired in Kenya, presumed or documented to be caused by L. aethiopica, with intravenous sodium stibogluconate, 18 to 20 mg Sb/kg body-weight twice daily for 30 days. All patients had a good response to treatment, with disappearance of parasites from skin smears and cultures after 14 to 27 days, clinical healing of the lesions, and no recurrence during a three to 18-month follow-up. Side effects of treatme…

Mapping of cholera hotspots in Kenya using epidemiologic and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators as part of Kenya's new 2022-2030 cholera elimination plan.

Cholera is an issue of major public health importance. It was first reported in Kenya in 1971, with the country experiencing outbreaks through the years, most recently in 2021. Factors associated with the outbreaks in Kenya include open defecation, population growth with inadequate expansion of safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure, population movement from neighboring countries, crowded settings such as refugee camps coupled with massive displacement of persons, mass gathering events, and changes in rainfall patterns. The Ministry of Health, together with other ministries and part…

Prevalence, intensity and associated risk factors of soil-transmitted helminth and schistosome infections in Kenya: Impact assessment after five rounds of mass drug administration in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In Kenya, over five million school age children (SAC) are estimated to be at risk of parasitic worms causing soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis. As such, the Government of Kenya launched a National School Based Deworming (NSBD) program in 2012 targeting the at-risk SAC living in endemic regions, with the aim of reducing infections prevalence to a level where they no longer constitute a public health problem. The impact of the program has been consistently monitored from 2012 to 2017 through a robust and extensive monitoring and evaluation (M&E) program. The ai…

Adolescents' awareness of and attitudes towards alcohol and substance use in Kenya.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUD) are highly prevalent among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa and co-occur with mental health disorders. This study aimed to understand adolescents’ awareness of and attitudes toward ASUD and their mental health literacy, with the long-term goal of informing the development of a preventive intervention. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study included 144 adolescents (aged 15–19) in 12 focus group discussions (FGDs). Participants were purposely sampled from three informal settlements in Nairobi and Kiambu counties, Kenya. Sepa…

Emergency triage in coastal Kenya: a survey of public Emergency Departments.

BACKGROUND: Triage is a cornerstone of emergency care, with profound impacts on care prioritization and mortality. However, implementation of structured triage systems across sub-Saharan Africa has been inconsistent, hindered by context-specific challenges. Little is known about the landscape of triage in public emergency departments (EDs) in Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to characterize triage infrastructure, practices, and staff perceptions across public EDs in coastal Kenya. METHODS: In February 2026, trained study staff administered a standardized questionnaire to clinical …
