PURPOSE: We describe a case of early onset keratectasia after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in a patient with Vertical D topographic pattern in one eye and suspected keratoconus in the other eye.
METHODS: A 31-year-old woman underwent bilateral PRK: attempted correction was -8.00-2.00 × 30° in her right eye (RE) and -4.50-1.50 × 150° tabo in her left eye (LE). Preoperative corneal thickness was 512 µm in the RE and 520 µm in the LE. Preoperative topography showed an asymmetric bow-tie pattern and skewed axis in RE and a Vertical D pattern in LE. Intended maximum ablation was 91 µm in RE a

Nocardia keratitis occurred in 4 eyes of 3 patients (2 women and 1 man) who had photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) by the same surgeon at the same center. Two eyes of the first 2 patients required lamellar keratectomy to debulk the involved stroma and obtain specimens for microbiological and histopathological evaluation. Light microscopic examination disclosed gram-positive and acid-fast filaments of Nocardia that were confirmed by the microbiological results. Diagnosis of Nocardia keratitis in the third case was not as challenging as in the first 2 cases because of a high index of suspicion. C

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with recurrent corneal erosion syndrome can suffer both psychologically and socially due to excessive pain. After the failure of conservative treatment, conventional surgical interventions, such as anterior stromal puncture have been suggested. The purpose of this study was to assess the morphological and functional results of minimally invasive excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (e-PTK) for treatment of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome and in particular, to evaluate the cumulative recurrence rate.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between July 1990 and January 200

Forty-six pterygia were surgically removed using a modified "bare sclera" technique. Additionally, an excimer laser PTK was performed using the immersion method to smooth the irregular surface of the cornea. Follow-up was 6 to 10 months. We found 24 recurrences. In patients with pterygia of more than 4 mm who were from southern Europe, the Middle East, or Africa, the recurrence rate was 100%. In pterygia from 2 to 4 mm the recurrence rate was 50%; in pterygia up to the limbus no recurrences were noted. The excimer laser has no positive influence on pterygia recurrences that have been removed u

A 7-month-old intact female Persian cat was diagnosed with symblepharon accompanied by epiphora, brownish ocular discharge, and ocular discomfort in the left eye. Superficial keratectomy (SK) was performed to remove adhesions between the conjunctiva and cornea. To prevent re-adhesion after SK, the detached conjunctival tissue was sutured to the corneal limbus, and a soft contact lens (SCL) was inserted and a partial temporary tarsorrhaphy was performed. The SCL and tarsorrhaphy sutures were maintained for 22 days, and symblepharon did not recur 347 days postoperatively. SK combined with SCL is

The present study aimed to evaluate the changes of corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) in patients with myopia. A total of 80 eyes of 80 patients with myopia with or without astigmatism were evaluated. Prior to and 1 year after the surgery, uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity in logMAR were assessed. Wavefront aberrations on the anterior surface of the cornea, as well as the posterior and total cornea, were measured via Pentacam. The HOA of the anterior surface and total values of spherical and coma aberrations incre

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) represents a therapeutic option to remodel corneal stroma and to compensate refractive errors, which involves inflammatory and/or regenerative processes. In this context, the modulation of cytokines/chemokines in the conjunctival sac fluid and their role in the maintenance of the corneal microenvironment during the healing process upon refractive procedures has not been deeply investigated. In this study, serial samples of conjunctival sac fluid of patients (n = 25) undergoing PRK were harvested before and at different time points after surgery. The levels of
