The average plasma testosterone concentration of women with either hirsutism or polycystic ovaries and hirsutism was higher (p < 0.01) than that of normal women although the ranges overlapped. Testosterone blood production rates averaged 830 +/- 120 SE and 1,180 +/- 310 SE mug per day in the two groups of hirsute women and 230 +/- 33 SE mug per day in normal women. The ranges did not overlap. A number of 3-keto bile acids were synthesized by the selective oxidation of bile acid methyl esters with silver carbonate-Celite in refluxing toluene. The pure 3-keto bile acids were isolated simply by filtering the reaction mixture and concentrating the filtrate. The relation of the bile acid structure to the oxidation rate is also discussed.

During late pregnancy the urinary excretion of steroid 21-deoxyketols, which contain the CH3-CO-C(OH)less than side chain, was 1.16 +/- 0.50 mg/24 h (mean +/- SD n = 9). The mean excretion of these metabolites in 8 pregnancies with an anencephalic foetus showed a significant reduction (P less than 0.01, t-test) to 0.42 +/- 0.18 mg/24 h. Six untreated non-pregnant women and 7 taking oral contraceptives which contain oestrogen had steroid 21-deoxyketol excretions of 0.26 +/- 0.09 mg/24 h and 0.19 +/- 0.09 mg/24 h respectively.
