BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder resulting from pathogenic variants in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, leading to hyperactivation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway and subsequent development of benign neoplasms in multiple organs. Kidney involvement is frequent, being angiomyolipoma the most common lesion. Angiomyolipoma can occur since childhood and progress throughout life, potentially leading to complications such as hemorrhage and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aims to characterize the kidney phenotype in a Brazilian c

Angiomyolipoma of the kidney is a common benign mesenchymal neoplasm of kidney. A rare variant, epithelioid angiomyolipoma, however, may show malignant behavior. We report a case of epithelioid angiomyolipoma in a patient not having tuberous sclerosis which was initially misdiagnosed as renal cell carcinoma. A 39-year-old woman presented with a history of flank pain. Ultrasonography revealed a left renal mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) abdomen revealed mass involving hilum of the kidney. On core biopsy a possibility of renal cell carcinoma was suggested. The patient underwen

A 73-year-old woman presented with an hemorrhagic kidney tumor initially interpreted as a renal cell carcinoma (RCC). A retroperitoneal recurrence infiltrating the duodenal wall was made up of clear cells, some of which contained Fontana-Masson positive pigment, immunopositive for HMB-45, S-100 protein, actin, and vimentin. The same immunohistochemical profile was retrospectively reproduced in the kidney tumor, where melanosomes were also found ultrastructurally. Lipomatous differentiation was not observed. There was no history of malignant melanoma (MM), or stigmata of tuberous sclerosis. The

Angioscintiphotography with 99mTc has been performed in 310 cases of space-occupying kidney lesions with the purpose of establishing the diagnostic value of the kidney perfusion. In the presence of a neoplasm, a more or less marked blood flow in the lesion generally appears as a hot area. This pattern is not observed in poor vascularized carcinomas or in Wilms' tumors. The percentage of poorly vascularized tumors is moderate and does not affect the value of the method. Cystic lesions appear usually to be cold. Large cysts exhibit no uptake; on the contrary, the degree of vascularization in the

A solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an unusual spindle cell neoplasm that usually arises in the pleura but rarely occurs in the kidney. Despite its rarity, histological diagnosis of SFT is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis with other malignant tumors in the kidney. We report a SFT of the left kidney that presented as a malignant tumor on radiographic findings in a 75-year-old Japanese woman. The tumor was well circumscribed and composed of a mixture of spindle cells and dense collagenous bands with no areas of necrosis or cystic changes noted macroscopically or microscopically. We identified an unusual pattern of renal tubular proliferation associated with chronic renal disease, found in 23 patients, diffusely (n=12), or focally (n=11). Incidence was 5% of end-stage renal disease kidneys from one institution (8/177) and 7/23 patients with acquired cystic kidney disease-associated renal cell carcinoma from another. Most (19 patients) had 1 or more neoplasms including papillary (n=9), acquired cystic kidney disease (n=8), clear cell (n=4), or clear cell papillary (n=3) renal cell carcinoma. All (20 men, 3 women) had end-stage renal disease. The predominant pattern (n=1

UNLABELLED: Thyroid-like follicular carcinoma of the kidney (TLFC), a rare neoplasm with low malignant potential, is histologically similar to primary thyroid follicular carcinoma, but characteristically lacks thyroid immunohistochemical markers. We report a case of 34-year old patient with nephrolithiasis. Ultrasound revealed hepatorenal cysts consistent with adult type polycystic kidney disease (ATPKD) and a cytologically confirmed left kidney tumor. Nephrectomy specimen contained sharply demarcated lesion of unusual morphology. Tubular and cystic structures lined by mostly cuboidal cells an

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma are 2 different presentations of the most common B-cell neoplasm in western countries (CLL/SLL). In this disease, kidney involvement is usually silent, and is rarely reported in the literature. This study provides a clinicopathological analysis of all-cause kidney disease in CLL/SLL patients.
METHODS: Fifteen CLL/SLL patients with kidney biopsy were identified retrospectively. Demographic, clinical, pathological and laboratory data were assessed at biopsy, and during follow-up.
RESULTS: At biopsy 11 patients presented im

Lifelong immunosuppression, cytotoxic effects of some immunosuppressive drugs, and opportunistic oncogenic viruses increase malignancy risks in solid organ recipients. The risk of myeloid neoplasms including chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is also increased in this patient population. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), the key element of CML therapy, should be used cautiously in transplantation patients as they may interact with calcineurin inhibitors. With this report, a 63-year-old female kidney transplant recipient who developed CML 9 years after kidney transplantation is presented. CML in t

Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is a relatively common developmental anomaly in infants and children and has a good prognosis. In contrast, a malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (MRTK) is one of the most lethal neoplasms of early life. However, the presentation of such a lethal tumor combined with multicystic dysplasia has not been reported to date. In this report, we describe a case of MRTK in a 5-yr-old girl who also had multicystic dysplasia. She was previously diagnosed with MCDK at birth due to a huge palpable mass on the right side of the abdomen. The right kidney was extensively

A 65-year-old female patient with chronic kidney disease stage 5 and a history of spleen neoplasm with dissemination within peritoneum is presented. During 5 years of hemodialysis therapy, bilateral occlusion of brachiocephalic and iliac vein developed as a consequence of vein catheterization. An attempt to cannulate inferior vena cava was unsuccessful. A cannulation of dilated collateral abdominal veins with dialysis needles allowed to perform several hemodialysis sessions in the patient.

We present a patient of tuberous sclerosis complex with bilateral renal angiomyolipoma and hepatic angiomyolipoma with spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage from right angiomyolipoma (Wunderlich's syndrome). Nephron preserving approach was tried but the right kidney could not be salvaged. Hepatic angiomyolipoma was managed conservatively. Wunderlich's syndrome has been found in around 10% of cases of renal angiomyolipomas. Hepatic Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm of the liver which is rarely reported in literature.

Myelolipoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm composed of mature adipose tissue and hematopoietic elements. Myelolipoma occurs most frequently in the adrenal gland but occasionally can be seen in extra-adrenal locations such as lung, liver, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and kidney. We report a case of extra-adrenal myelolipoma presented as a localized asymptomatic mass in the renal sinus of left native kidney of a 60-year-old woman. The patient was being investigated for end-stage renal disease status post renal transplant. Histologic examination of the lesion showed classic features for myelolip

A primary leiomyosarcoma of the kidney is a rare, but highly aggressive, neoplasm, accounting for only 0.1% of all invasive renal tumors. Local or systemic recurrence is common, but a leiomyosarcoma is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We recently encountered an interesting case of an unusual recurrence of a renal leiomyosarcoma. A 57-year-old woman visited our hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain. Four years previously, she had undergone a left nephrectomy. She had a primary leiomyosarcoma of the kidney that had been misdiagnosed as a renal cell carcinoma. Colonoscopy revealed the

INTRODUCTION: Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a hematologic disorder that is an overlap syndrome between myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative neoplasms, and can be associated with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to describe kidney involvement in patients with CMML, their treatments, and outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a French and American multicenter retrospective study in 15 centers, identifying patients with CMML with acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and urine abnormalities.
RESULTS: Sixteen patients (males, n = 14; medi

BACKGROUND: Primary renal neuroendocrine tumors (PRNETs) are exceptionally rare neoplasms, with only limited cases documented in the literature. Their occurrence in association with horseshoe kidney represents an even rarer clinical scenario. This report presents a case of well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor arising in a horseshoe kidney and discusses its clinical management and prognostic implications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old female was admitted after an incidental discovery of a left renal mass during a routine health examination. Imaging studies, including enhanced CT and MRI

Background and Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze sex differences in risk factors associated with hospital mortality in patients with Fournier gangrene (FG). Materials and Methods: A retrospective population-based study (2016-2021) included FG hospitalizations in Spain. To identify the risk factors, we used multivariable logistic regression and reported adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: There were 3644 admissions for FG during the study period (82.5% men and 17.5% women). The mean hospitalization rate per 1000 admissions/year was 0.23 for me

Renal schwannomas are extraordinarily rare neoplasms; only six have been reported, the majority of which occurred in the renal pelvis. We report the clinical and pathologic features of four additional cases. The resected kidney in all patients contained a well-demarcated, yellow-tan, smooth, and bulging intraparenchymal tumor (mean size, 9.7 cm; range, 4 to 16 cm). Microscopically, three cases were classified as cellular schwannomas, and one was a usual-type schwannoma, with degenerative nuclear atypia. By immunohistochemistry, all tumors were strongly S-100 protein positive and negative for p

Fibrillary glomerulonephritis (FGN) is a rare glomerular disease with various etiologies, including idiopathic cases and associations with autoimmune diseases, neoplasms, and viral infections, such as Hepatitis C. We present a case of a patient who developed acute kidney injury (AKI) with atypical clinical features. A subsequent renal biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of FGN, with distinct immunofluorescence staining for DNAJB9. The patient tested positive for Hepatitis C antibodies with an undetectable viral load, indicating a past infection that had self-cleared. This finding prompted further i
