Effects of laboratory salmon louse infection on osmoregulation, growth and survival in Atlantic salmon.

Anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) rely on long ocean migrations to build energy stores for maturation and spawning. In seawater, wild Atlantic salmon are threatened by high salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation levels resulting from intensive salmonid sea-cage aquaculture. Salmon lice infection can cause a stress response and an osmotic imbalance in the host. The lice infection intensity threshold values for these responses, however, remain to be identified in Atlantic salmon. In order to define this under laboratory conditions, individually tagged F1 wild origin Atlantic po

[The clinical laboratory characteristic of primary acute cytomegalovirus infection in non-immunocompromised adult patients].

The purpose of study is the clinical laboratory characteristic of acquired acute cytomegalovirus infection in nonimmunocompromised adult patients. The sampling included 75 patients with acquired acute cytomegalovirus infection admitted to the specialized clinical infection hospital of the Minzdrav of the Krasnodar kraii. The verifcation of diagnosis was implemented using serological tests and polymerase chain reaction. It is demonstrated that males of younger age are most often infected with acute cytomegalovirus infection in the Krasnodar kraii. The disease takes its course in a generalized f

Evaluation of Biofilm Induced Urinary Infection Stone Formation in a Novel Laboratory Model System.

PURPOSE: Infection stones, which comprise approximately 15% of all urinary tract stones, are induced by infection with urease-positive pathogens. The bacteria in the stone matrix present significant treatment impediments compared to metabolic kidney stones. While much is known about how urinary composition regulates metabolic stone formation, there is a general lack of knowledge of which urinary factors regulate the rate of infection stone formation. Unfortunately more in-depth research into infection stones is limited by the lack of suitable models for real-time study of bacterial biofilm for

Culture-Positive Pulmonary Aspergillosis Infection: Clinical and Laboratory Features of Solid-Organ Transplant Recipients.

OBJECTIVES: Aspergillosis is a common fungal infection among solid-organ transplant recipients. Even after awareness of this infection occurs, there are still gaps in nonculture diagnostic tests, which can delay treatment initiation. Here, we aimed to define the common traits of pulmonary aspergillosis infection among solid-organ transplant recipients, thus shedding light on prevention and early diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a database search of patients at Baskent University who had a positive aspergillosis culture between January 2010 and March 2016. Among 20 patients ident

Laboratory findings in acute Cytauxzoon felis infection in cougars (Puma concolor couguar) in Florida.

Intraerythrocytic piroplasms, morphologically indistinguishable from Cytauxzoon felis, were identified in stained blood films from more than one third of free-ranging cougars (Puma concolor couguar) in southern Florida in a study that failed to demonstrate negative effects of piroplasm infection on measured hematologic parameters. However, a recent study with a nested 18s rRNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay identified only 9% of the free-ranging cougars in southern Florida as infected with C. felis but found 83% of these animals were infected with an unnamed small Babesia sp. In this st

Infection and vertical transmission of Kamiti river virus in laboratory bred Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Kamiti river virus (KRV) is an insect-only Flavivirus that was isolated from field-collected Ae. macintoshi mosquitoes in 1999, and is closely related to cell fusing agent virus. Both of these viruses belong to the family Flaviviridae, which also contains other viruses of medical importance, such as yellow fever virus, West Nile virus and dengue. Because Ae. macintoshi is the only known natural host to KRV, the main objective of this study was to establish the possibility that other mosquito hosts of the virus exist, by determining its ability to infect Ae. aegypti mosquitoes under laboratory

Experimental infection with Rickettsia mooseri and antibody response of adult and newborn laboratory rats.

Quantitative studies of selected features of peripherally induced Rickettsia mooseri (= R. typhi) infection in Rattus norvegicus-derived white laboratory rats revealed a unique association between microbe and amplifying vertebrate host which appears to be especially conducive to maintenance of the enzootic cycle. Both adult and newborn (1-3 days old) rats were highly susceptible to percutaneous infection (ID50 = approximately 1 organism), but neither showed signs of disease or died even when inoculated with 10(4)-10(5) plaque-forming units. Gain in body weight of infected newborn rats was indi

Laboratory-Acquired Brucella abortus Infection Mimicking Autoimmune Disease: A Case Report with Genomic Confirmation.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease characterized by highly variable clinical manifestations that may mimic systemic autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. In Europe, where the incidence of brucellosis is relatively low, limited clinical awareness may contribute to delayed diagnosis and inappropriate management. In addition to zoonotic transmission, Brucella species are a well-recognized cause of laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs) among microbiology laboratory personnel. METHODS: We report a case of laboratory-acquired Brucella abortus infection in a young wo

Protocol for laboratory rearing and infection tracking of Rhodnius prolixus using 3D-printable designs.

Human infections by Trypanosoma cruzi propagate via its blood-feeding triatomine vector. Investigating parasite-vector interactions depends upon robust techniques to rear insects and analyze infections. Here, we present a protocol for laboratory rearing and infection tracking of Rhodnius prolixus. We describe steps for housing, feeding, and sorting strategies using 3D-printable designs. We also detail procedures for gut dissection, fecal collection, and parasite re-isolation. This protocol describes techniques that support efforts to understand and mitigate vector-mediated Chagas disease trans

Laboratory-Reported Normal Value Ranges Should Not Be Used to Diagnose Periprosthetic Joint Infection.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical laboratories offer several multipurpose tests, such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), which are not intended to diagnose any specific disease but are used by clinicians in multiple fields. The results and laboratory interpretation (normal/abnormal) of these multipurpose tests are based on laboratory-reported normal thresholds, which vary across clinical laboratories. In 2018, the International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection (2018 ICM) provided a gold-standard definition to diagnose periprosthetic joint infection (PJ
