The filarial parasite Dirofilaria immitis causes dirofilariosis, a potentially fatal pulmonary condition in canids and felines. We report for the first time the draft genome sequence of two psychrotrophic Pseudomonas species, Pseudomonas simiae RGCB 73 and Pseudomonas brenneri RGCB 108, from the Arctic that produce more than one acyl homoserine lactone molecule of varied N-acyl length. The study confirms the presence of a LuxR-LuxI (type) mediated quorum-sensing system in both the Pseudomonas species and enables us to understand the role of quorum sensing in their survival in extremely cold environments.

Crystal violet lactone (CVL) is a classic halochromic dye which has been widely used as chromogenic reagent in thermochromic and piezochromic systems. In this work, a very first example of CVL-based reversible photochromic compound was developed, which showed distinct color change upon UV-visible light irradiation both in solution and in solid matrix. Moreover, metal complex of CVL salicylaldehyde hydrozone was facilely synthesized, exhibiting reversible photochromic properties with good fatigue resistance. It was served as promising solid material for photo-patterning.

A cheap and fast construction of both enantiomers of substituted succinimides is reported. α- or β-amino acids, such as β-phenylalanine and α-tert-butyl aspartate, were found to be efficient organocatalysts for the reaction between α,α-disubstituted aldehydes and maleimides. Products containing contiguous quaternary-tertiary stereogenic centers are obtained in high to quantitative yields and excellent selectivities utilizing low catalyst loadings (0.5-3.5%). Finally, a one-pot efficient asymmetric synthesis of lactones is described.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) is a well-recognized challenge in farmed ruminants. The use of anthelmintics in combination is one of the strategies recommended to slow the rate of AR development.
