Baylisascaris procyonis is a well-known ascaridoid nematode that causes larva migrans in humans and many other animal species. The North American raccoon (Procyon lotor) is the definitive host, which has been successfully introduced in the past decades to other geographical regions around the world. Two white-headed lemurs (Eulemuralbifrons) from a Zoological Park in Lugo, Spain, developed severe neurological signs within a brief period after being transferred from exhibit and placed in close contact with three captive raccoons from the same zoo. One lemur was euthanized due to the severity of…

A review is given on the occurrence of Toxocariasis, the prevalence of T. canis among dogs and investigations on the prevalence of infective ova in soil- and sandsamples. The resistance of ascarid eggs and larvae against different environmental influences, including various sewage treatment-effects is discussed. The eggs are destroyed in 7 minutes when kept at 55 degrees C in a high humidity, slower when the humidity is lowered. When the temperature is -32 degrees C T. canis eggs are inactivated after 8 hours. Complete embryonation is reached in 4 days when the temperature is 30 degrees C. Pot

We report a familial case of visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by Toxocara canis larvae. Patient 1 was a 45-year-old man who presented to our university hospital complaining of mild fever, general fatigue, and headache. Patient 2 was a 71-year-old man and was the father of Patient 1; he presented complaining of cough and hyper-viscous white sputum. Laboratory data from both patients showed extensive eosinophilia, their chest X-ray findings revealed multiple pulmonary infiltrates, and their bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) showed an elevated eosinophil count. The diagnosis of VLM was made …

Toxocariasis is a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by the ascarid nematode Toxocara canis. The most common method available for serodiagnosis of toxocariasis is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test using Toxocara excretory-secretory antigen (TES). The present study describes the development of IgG-ELISA based on antiserum prepared against the recombinant arginine kinase of Toxocara canis. Antiserum was prepared against the purified recombinant arginine kinase (AK) using 6-week-old female Japanese white rabbits. Serum samples were collected from experimentally infected BALB/c and

This study describes the isolation of a Toxocara canis species-specific excretory-secretory (ES) antigen and the development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on this antigen. Analysis of the ES antigens of T. canis, Toxocara vitulorum, Ascaris lumbricoides and Necator americanus larval antigen was performed by SDS-PAGE followed by western blotting. A 57 kDa T. canis-specific antibody fraction (TcES-57) was identified by western blotting and labelling with anti-Toxocara antibodies (from experimental rabbits and human patients) and tracing with anti-human or anti-rabbit pero

A variety of helminth parasites have A and B blood group antigens on their surface. These antigens may cross-react with elevated concentrations of A and B isohemagglutinins in some patients and give false-positive results in the serologic diagnosis of visceral larva migrans caused by T. canis. To clarify this point, serum from patients with visceral larva migrans and elevated T. canis antibody titers as determined by ELISA were absorbed with AB blood cells and retested by ELISA without a demonstrable decline in T. canis antibody titers. Similarly, absorption with T. canis embryonated egg antig…

BACKGROUND: Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) is a neglected parasitic skin disease, widespread in resource-poor communities in tropical and subtropical countries. Incidence and risk factors have never been investigated in a cohort study.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To understand the seasonal epidemiology of HrCLM, an open cohort of 476 children in a resource-poor community in Manaus, Brazil was examined for HrCLM monthly over a period of 6 months. Monthly prevalence and intensity of infection were correlated with the amount of monthly precipitation. Multivariable Cox regre…

Toxocariasis is zoonotic disease caused by worms Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati. Human is its paratenic host. There are some clinical forms: Visceral larva migrans, cerebral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans and covert toxocariasis. At the present time diagnostics of toxocariasis is very difficult due to polymorphism of clinical symptoms and low specificity of laboratory tests.

Cutaneous larva migrans is a common parasitic dermatosis, typically affecting the feet and lower extremities, but involvement of atypical anatomical sites may lead to diagnostic delay. We report a 40-year-old woman who presented with an intensely pruritic, migratory serpiginous eruption that sequentially involved the ear, neck, shoulder, and scapular region over one month. A detailed exposure history, characteristic migratory morphology, and supportive dermoscopic findings established the diagnosis of cutaneous larva migrans. The patient responded well to systemic albendazole with adjunctive t…

During a parasitological investigation in 1982, sparse samples extracted from sand of different frequentation beaches were analysed according to three methods (Baermann, floating, screening). Larva of hookworms of animal origin (Ankylostoma caninum, Ankylostoma tubaeforme, Ankylostoma braziliense and perhaps Ankylostoma ceylanicum) were identified, sometimes in important quantity, just as eggs of Toxocara sp. Clinical cases of cutaneous Larva migrans are frequent in the West Indies, contrary to cases of visceral Larva migrans. Some prophylactic measures are proposed.

A case of persistent folliculitis in a 21-year-old man was demonstrated to be due to Ancylostoma caninum larvae. Treatment with oral thiabendazole was curative. Cutaneous larva migrans may be due to A caninum, but this presentation appears to be unique. The literature concerning etiology and pathogenesis of larva migrans is discussed with reference to this case.

The detection of antibodies in subjects with visceral larva migrans syndrome caused by Toxocara canis is usually carried out with antigenic larvae, whose preparation presents some difficulties. Results obtained using extracts prepared from adult parasites show that such antigens are quite suitable for the detection of antibodies present in visceral larva migrans syndrome. This phenomenon is easily understood when one considers that there are numerous antigenic points in common between the different stages of the evolution of this parasite.

Certain zoonotic parasites are enteropathogens in dogs that cause serious human disease such as cystic echinococcosis, human alveolar echinococcosis, visceral larva migrans, and ocular larva migrans. This study investigated the prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs in the Chenaran County, Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran. Sampling was carried out randomly in 17 villages from November 2009 to January 2010. Seventy-seven fecal samples from 28 domestic and 49 stray dogs were examined using sieving/flotation and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Intestinal parasites were found in 51 of the 77 (6…

Toxocara canis and T. cati are among the most widely distributed helminthic species in the world with a high zoonotic impact. Millions of people are infecteda and hundreds of thousands are suffering from toxocarosis, a disease encompassing four different entities: larva migrans visceralis (VLM) syndrome, ocular larva migrans (OLM) syndrome, covert toxocarosis (covT), common toxocarosis (comT) and neurotoxocarosis (NT). Toxocara infections in humans may remain clinically inapparent but may also induce severe diseases. This contribution gives a synoptic overview of the most important historical,…

Toxocariasis is a parasitic infection caused by the roundworms Toxocara canis or Toxocara cati, mostly due to accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs. Clinical manifestations vary and are classified as visceral larva migrans or ocular larva migrans according to the organs affected. Central nervous system involvement is an unusual complication. Here, we report a case of multiple cerebral infarction and concurrent multi-organ involvement due to T. canis infestation of a previous healthy 39-year-old male who was admitted for right leg weakness. After treatment with albendazole, the patient's cli…
