It is a common belief that snowboarding might carry a higher risk of accident than alpine skiing. In order to prove this suspicion but also to figure out a basic knowledge to develop special security precautions for snowboarding 204 snowboarding-accidents in the Alps have been registered and analysed. The major purpose of this study was to find out the crucial points of risks of this new way of performing winter sports and to compare these risks with the risk-profile of alpine skiing. These have been the main results: More than two thirds of all accidents happen on icy or hard courses. Few mor

Professional and recreational sporting activities have increased substantially in recent years and have led to a rise in the number of sports-related and overuse injuries. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has become an important tool for evaluating the lower leg for providing the necessary information for patient management and rehabilitation following this injury. The purpose of this essay is to give an overview of the MR findings of common overuse injuries and sports-related injuries to the bones and soft-tissue structures of the hind foot and ankle.

Management of vascular traumas is frequently delayed. Vascular injuries after elective operation for bone lengthening or correction of a deformity are very'rare situations. We describe 3 cases. Case 1: male, aged 22, undergoing corticotomy for bone lengthening; immediately presented acute limb ischaemia due to a partial lesion of the popliteal artery, documented by U.S. After 7 h, direct reconstruction of the artery and fasciotomies were performed. Case 2: male, aged 27, undergoing directional osteotomy for genu varus correction. For 30 days, constant increase in leg volume and decrease in fun

INTRODUCTION: Injuries caused by aircraft bombs cause severe damages to the human body. They are characterized by massive destruction of injured tissues and organs, primary contamination by polymorph bacterial flora and modified reactivity of the body. Upon being wounded by aircraft bombs projectiles a victim simultaneously sustains severe damages of many organs and organ systems due to the fact that a large number of projectiles at the same time injure the chest, stomach, head and extremities.
CASE REPORT: We presented a patient, 41 years of age, injured by aircraft bomb with hemo-pneumothor

Ankle injuries in the young athlete are quite different from those of an adult. Because the epiphyseal plates of the distal tibia and fibula are significantly weaker than surrounding ligaments, failure on stress occurs through the growth plates rather than through soft tissue. Growth-plate injuries can assume a distinct pattern based on the maturity of the physis. Leg length inequality and angular deformity are potential sequelae from significant injury to the ankle in the skeletally immature but, fortunately, occur infrequently. Soft-tissue injuries about the ankle are rare, but with advanced

The possibility of measuring predictive factors to discriminate athletes at higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury still represents an open research question. We performed an observational study with thirteen female basketball players who performed monopodalic jumps and single-leg squat tests. One of them suffered from an ACL injury after the first test session. Data gathered from twelve participants, who did not suffer from ACL injury, were used for a reliability analysis. Parameters related to leg stability, load absorption capability and leg mobility showed good-to-excellent

A group of 304 runners enrolling in a marathon training program had alignment measurements performed and completed a questionnaire on training practices and injuries over the previous 12 months. The alignment measures consisted of arch index (AI), heel valgus (HV), knee tubercle-sulcus angle (TSA), knee varus (KV), and leg-length difference (LLD). Results indicated few consistent statistical associations between these alignment measures and risk of injuries, either bivariately or multivariately: left AI with hamstring injuries; right AI with shin injuries; right HV with back injuries; left TSA

INTRODUCTION: With an incidence of less than 0.2% of all pediatric fractures, pelvic ring injuries are rare. Historically they were conservatively treated, but because malunion and long-term morbidity are associated with unstable injuries, a trend towards operative treatment can be observed. The purpose was to determine clinical and radiographic outcomes following these complex pediatric pelvic ring injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This Level IV retrospective analysis was completed at a private orthopaedic practice in association with a Level One teaching trauma center. There were 33 children

Foot injuries constitute a spectrum of problems that can be classified by severity. The development of successful techniques for the treatment of lower leg injuries has made the severity of a concomitant foot injury a key factor in determining the overall salvageability of the leg. A more complete classification of foot injuries is therefore needed and has been proposed. Preoperative assessment of foot injuries differs in the acute versus the delayed presentation. The acute case requires evaluation of wound conditions, exposed structures, and associated proximal injuries. The chronic injury re…

INTRODUCTION: Anticoagulant treatment might be used to prevent DVT and its complications in patients with leg immobilisation.
METHODS: In April 2007, a questionnaire was sent to all 79 Dutch surgical and orthopaedic teaching hospitals and was used to obtain information in relation to use of thromboprophylaxis for patients with immobilisation for below-knee leg injuries in their department.
RESULTS: A total of 79 questionnaires were sent, of which 69 were returned (response rate 88%). In total, 8 of the 69 departments never used thromboprophylaxis at all (12%), 27 of 61 (44%) only prescribed …

Injuries in triathletes are common and are mostly overuse injuries. Rotator cuff tendinitis is the most common complaint from swimming, but the incidence of tendinopathy and rotator cuff tears on magnetic resonance imaging is comparable in triathletes without and with shoulder pain. Cycling injuries are mainly to the knee, including patellar tendinosis, iliotibial band syndrome, and patellofemoral stress syndrome, and to the Achilles tendon and the cervical and lumbar spine. Running is associated with most injuries in triathletes, during both training and racing, causing the athlete to discont

Ankle sprains are common in dancers. They result from working in the positions which allow increased risk of sprain on the lateral side of the ankle for many hours a day. One hundred ankle injuries were evaluated. The mechanisms of injury are presented, as well as a classification of these injuries. The recommended treatment and rehabilitation are discussed. Leg muscle strength must be restored before rehabilitation is considered complete.

The present article aims to present the use of dermal matrices in severe degloving, avulsion, and necrotizing injuries of the leg and foot in 3 patients. Conventional reconstruction would require the use of free flaps, since exposure of vessels, nerves, joints, and tendons rendered the mere resurfacing with skin grafts insufficient, and extensive cutaneous detachment precluded the use of local fasciocutaneous flaps. All injuries underwent thorough and repeated surgical debridements and wash outs, followed by negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). Once negative tissue cultures were obtained, t

This study examined the criterion validity of self-reported running-related injuries (RRI) by novice runners. Fifty-eight participants (41 females; age 46 ± 11 yrs) of the "Start-to-Run" program provided self-reports on their RRIs using an online questionnaire. Subsequently, they attended injury consultations with sports medicine physicians who provided physician-reports (blinded for the self-reports) as a reference standard. Self-reports and physician-reports included information on injury location (i.e., hip/groin, upper leg, knee, lower leg, and ankle/foot) and injury type (i.e., muscle-ten

Intraligamentous injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus injuries are rare in children and adolescents and often occur as a result of sports injuries. Clinically, they usually present as a hemarthrosis. The diagnosis of choice is the MRI examination. Surgical treatment of intraligamentary ACL injuries using the transphyseal technique is now also the gold standard treatment for children and adolescents, leg axis and length checks are necessary after surgery until growth is complete. Meniscus injuries are also addressed surgically. Postoperative follow-up treatment and reha

INTRODUCTION: Injuries of the distal femur are rare in children; however, they are frequently associated with complications. They are almost always physeal, most frequently Salter-Harris type II epiphyseolysis. The treatment of such injuries is similar in all physeal injuries. It is intended to provide growth plate recovery by gentle reduction and stable fixation thus preventing secondary complications, and also to provide decompression of the segment to solve the compartment syndrome and recover the neurovascular structures.
