Lip reconstruction following resection for an unusual basal-cell carcinoma.

Basal-cell carcinoma most commonly occurs in men in the fifth to seventh decades of life. The area of the lesion is usually one that has frequent exposure to the sun: the middle third of the face and upper lip. An unusual case of basal-cell carcinoma occurring on the lower lip and involving the commissure in a 21-year-old woman is presented. The surgical procedures for resection of the tumor and reconstruction of the commissure are described.

Spindle Cell Carcinoma: A Rare and Aggressive Variant of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Upper Lip.

Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC), also known as sarcomatoid carcinoma, is a rare biphasic malignant neoplasm ranging variably from reactive to malignant making it critical and relatively challenging where tumors have areas of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) admixed with areas of pleomorphic tumor. It is a rare variant of SCC characterized by malignant spindle-shaped cells resembling sarcomas. Spindle cell lesions of the head and neck are diverse with great clinical and biological variety. They tend to show rapid progression with a high recurrence rate and the ability to metastasize, all of which co

Fibrous papules on the lips.

Multiple angiofibromas are commonly found in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. We report a rare presentation of multiple congenital fibrous papules occurring only on the lips with no syndromic associations.

Patient, Defect, and Surgical Factors Influencing Use of Ancillary Procedures after Facial Mohs Repairs.

This article determines if patient, defect, and repair factors can be used to predict the use of additional treatments to achieve optimal aesthetic results after repair of facial Mohs defects. An electronic chart review of patients undergoing Mohs excision and reconstruction of facial neoplasms from November 2005 to April 2017 was performed, reviewing patient demographics and history, tumor size, defect size and location, method and service of reconstruction, time between resection and repair, complications, and subsequent treatments. A total of 1,500 cases with basal cell and squamous cell ca

The staircase technique for treatment of cancer of the lower lip: a report of 36 cases.

PURPOSE: This article reports the authors' experience with treatment of lower lip cancer using the staircase technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients with stage T1 or T2 cancers of the lower lip were treated. RESULTS: No recurrences were observed during a 6- to 32-month follow-up. All patients showed excellent aesthetic results and no microstomia. CONCLUSIONS: The staircase technique can be used to close defects of up to two thirds of the lower lip. Two bilateral symmetric flaps are used for median defects; 2 bilateral asymmetric flaps are used for paramedian defects greater tha

Full-thickness reconstruction of cheek defect involving oral commissure with forearm tendinocutaneous flap.

An 82-year-old man underwent full-thickness reconstruction of the cheek for a defect of the oral commissure resulting from a T3N1M0 squamous cell carcinoma. He had previously had both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. A tendinocutaneous flap from the forearm incorporating palmaris longus was used for static reconstruction. The vermilion was then reconstructed with rotation flaps from the contralateral vermilion. Oral function was restored, and he had no problems with drooling or speech.

Scarcity of publicly available oral cancer image datasets for machine learning research.

Publicly available image datasets of pathologies have easy accessibility and thus, are increasingly being used in the field of machine learning and medical diagnosis. As oral cancer is the most common head and neck cancer with an increasing incidence rate, it is of paramount importance to know the status of publicly available datasets. We designed a systematic search (PubMed, Google Scholar, Google Dataset Search, and Google) to identify the publicly available oral cancer image datasets. After carefully screening 332 articles/datasets, only one met the selection criteria and was available publ

Lipoma on the Lower Lip.

Lipoma is a benign tumor of fat tissue, found frequently in subcutaneous tissues. However, oral manifestations are relatively rare. The present patient illustrates the successful treatment of a lipoma treated by complete excision of the lesion. A female patient, 75 years old, presenting lesion in the right oral vestibule where excisional biopsy was performed. The professional must diagnose this type of injury as soon as possible and treat it so that it does not take large proportions, which can result in esthetic and functional sequelae to the patient.

A case of cystadenoma arising in the upper lip.

Cystadenoma, a common benign tumor derived from glandular tissue, generally occurs in the appendix, ovaries, kidney, or pancreas. While rare in the oral and maxillofacial region, they do sometimes occur in the parotid or minor salivary glands. We report a case of cystadenoma arising in the upper lip region. The patient was a 37-year-old woman referred to our hospital with a painless mass on the left upper lip initially found during treatment at a local dental clinic. The medical history was non-contributory. The 7×5-mm mass was well-defined, elastic, and flexible. The surface of the mucosa app

Malignant melanoma in a child. A case report.

The rare occurrence of malignant melanoma in a child is reported. Differentiation on histopathological grounds between this tumour and the more common juvenile melanoma may be difficult, but this important distinction should be possible in almost all cases.

Epidermoid implantation cyst of the lower lip: report of case.

Epidermoid implantation cysts are relatively rare lesions of the oral region. A lesion occurring in the lower lip of a 21-year-old man is reported. In the pathogenesis of these lesions, trauma is usually the precipitating factor. Treatment is surgical and histopathologic examination will give the final diagnosis.

Reconstruction of extensive lower lip defects using vascularized mucosal flap with external skin complex tissue.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of lip anatomy and the roles played by the lip make the reconstruction of lip defects more challenging. Adequate reconstruction of lip defects requires adaptation of mucosa, vermilion, and skin features in lip as well as its specific function. METHODS: A 59-year-old male with left lower lip cancer underwent en-bloc resection and left selective neck dissection (SND), followed by immediate reconstruction using Facial Artery Myomucosal Island Flap (FAMMIF) with external Skin Complex Tissue. RESULTS: The use of chimeric flap based on FAMMIF and its external skin tissue

Transposition nasolabial flap: A versatile flap for sensate reconstruction of lip defects.

INTRODUCTION: Lip reconstruction aims at maintaining the function and aesthetics of the facial subunits. Sensation in the reconstructed lip helps in bolus formation, tactile discrimination, and thermal sensation. In this study, we aim to describe random pattern nasolabial flap for lip reconstruction using various functional parameters. METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective study of 22 patients with carcinoma lip who underwent surgical resection and reconstruction with sensate nasolabial flap. Several clinicopathological parameters were studied. Outcome parameters like oral competence, tactile
