Influence of sex-hormones on hepato-toxicosis induced by 2 halogenalkanes viz. carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene has been studied in rats. Rate of peroxidative decomposition thus measured by determining malonaldehyde has shown the protective effects of testosterone on CCl4 toxicity but an additive effect on injury caused by trichloroethylene, whereas progesterone failed to offer protection against their toxicity. Modification in histopathological lesions thus caused by these hormones have also been studied and discussed.

Iron and aluminum complexes of nitrilotriacetic acid cause severe nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats. In addition, a high incidence of renal cell carcinoma is seen in ferric nitrilotriacetate-treated animals. The present study was performed to see if lipid peroxidation is involved in ferric nitrilotriacetate toxicity. The level of certain parameters of lipid peroxidation and the activity of lysosome hydrolases were studied on the shock model in rats. It was established that the traumatic shock in the experiment is accompanied by the growth of the level of over-oxidation products (malonic dialdehyde, diene conjugates), the rate of erythrocyte hemolysis as well as by an increase in the hydrolase activity. Administration of ionol (60 mg/kg) inhibits the higher activity of radical-free lipid oxidation, decreases the damage of membrane structure and the metabolism disturbance.

Galactosamine injury of rat liver brings about induction of microsomal oxidation enzymes after 24 hours. Such a conclusion may be arrived at on the basis of an analysis of variation in the activity of cytochrome P-450, cytochrome b5, and NADH ferricyanide reductase while comparing normal and galactosamine-treated rats. The index quantitatively characterizing the serum lipids reserve for peroxidation (SLRP) was developed and evaluated in rats with simulated toxic (CCl4) hepatitis. The index represents a ratio of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations in serum before and after stimulation of peroxidation by Fe2+ ions (in the same sample). The index SLRP allows to evaluate direction and the intensity of imbalance among prooxidants action and the total activity of serum lipids antioxidant system even when there is no change of MDA basal level.

Fetal levels of a representative lipid peroxide malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured as an index of oxidative stress in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia (n = 19) and in normal pregnancy (n = 23). PO2, PCO2 and pH were also measured in umbilical venous blood obtained by cordocentesis. Plasma MDA levels rose an average of 26% above those of normal pregnancy (p < 0.05) and the elevation correlated inversely with umbilical venous PO2 and pH. The results indicate that fetal oxidative stress occurs in preeclampsia before the onset of labor.
