OBJECTIVES: To present in a retrospective report a contemporary series of patients aged 14 years and younger who were treated for stones with ureteroscopy at our institution from 1991 to 2002. With the improvement and miniaturization of ureteroscopes and ancillary instruments, the endoscopic treatment of renal and ureteral calculi in children has become more feasible.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of 23 patients aged 14 years and younger who had undergone ureteroscopy for the treatment of ureteral or renal calculi at our institution.
RESULTS: A total of 27 stones were t

To compare the impact of conventional Ho:YAG, pulse-modulated Ho:YAG, and thulium fiber laser (TFL) on surgical outcomes in patients undergoing retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) for renal stones using a propensity score–matched design. We retrospectively reviewed 1,039 adults who underwent RIRS for renal stones between 1 January 2022 and 1 June 2025 at a center; 755 patients met the inclusion criteria. Patients were categorized by laser type: Group 1, conventional 30 W Ho:YAG; Group 2, pulse-modulated 65 W Ho:YAG; Group 3, 60 W TFL. Demographic variables, stone characteristics, laser-on tim

Experience with 19 patients (25 ureters) who suffered the complication of a large steinstrasse (a third or more of the ureteral length) has led to lessons regarding the management of this complication as well as to insights into patient presentation, metabolic consequences, and the efficiency of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Few symptoms were present in a large percentage of patients despite urinary obstruction, decreased renal function, infection and in several cases impending sepsis. Large stone burdens, bilateral treatment, inability to debulk stone burden before extracorporeal sho

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery is a current trend in all kinds of surgical fields. Endoscopic stone manipulation with electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) is the preferred method for treating lower ureteral stones or calculi which cannot be resolved with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL). We evaluated the efficiency and safety of holmium yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser for treatment of large impacted ureteral stones.
METHODS: In a clinical trial period including April and May 1998, 13 patients with ureteral stones underwent holmium YAG lasertripsy. Six patients had large i

Chronic pancreatitis is a progressive disease characterized by irregular fibrosis, cellular infiltration, and parenchymal loss within the pancreas. Chronic pancreatitis treatment includes lifestyle modifications based on disease etiology, dietary adjustments appropriate for each stage and condition, drug therapy, endoscopic treatments, and surgical treatments. Although surgical treatments of symptomatic chronic pancreatitis provide good pain relief, endoscopic therapies are recommended as the first-line treatment because they are minimally invasive. In recent years, endoscopic therapy has emer

Impacted ureteral stones are a challenge because of the inherent nature of the condition and the complexities of intervention. Imaging studies and measurement of ureteral wall thickness can aid in preparing for intervention and preoperative patient counseling. Diligent management and appropriate knowledge of lasers, scopes, and disposable equipment can help in optimizing success rates and preservation of renal function.

The prevalence of equine urolithiasis has been estimated to be low. In horses with clinical signs of urolithiasis, uroliths are most commonly encountered in the urinary bladder, but it is not uncommon to detect uroliths in more than one location. The most common clinical signs for cystic calculi are urine scalding of the hind limbs, hematuria, tenesmus and dysuria. Numerous surgical techniques and approaches have been described for the treatment of urolithiasis in horses; however, independent of which approach is chosen, the goal should be to remove all calculi completely from the urinary trac

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a model to predict whether patients undergoing ureteroscopy (URS) will receive a stent.
METHODS: Using registry data obtained from the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative Reducing Operative Complications from Kidney Stones initiative, we identified patients undergoing URS from 2016 to 2020. We used patients' age, sex, body mass index, size and location of the largest stone, current stent in place, history of any kidney stone procedure, procedure type, and acuity to fit a multivariable logistic regression model to a derivation cohort consist

OBJECTIVES: Intracorporeal lithotripsy must be used under direct visual control with an additional endoscope in order to ensure safety and precise targeting during the removal of difficult-to-extract bile duct stones using conventional methods. The currently available "mother-baby" scope system has several disadvantages. We evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of direct peroral cholangioscopy (POC) using an ultra-slim upper endoscope for electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) or laser lithotripsy (LL) for the treatment of difficult-to-extract bile duct stones.
METHODS: A total of 18 patients wh

The Holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) laser has been the gold-standard for laser lithotripsy over the last 20 years. However, recent reports about a new prototype thulium fiber laser (TFL) lithotripter have revealed impressive levels of performance. We therefore decided to systematically review the reality and expectations for this new TFL technology. This review was registered in the PROSPERO registry (CRD42019128695). A PubMed search was performed for papers including specific terms relevant to this systematic review published between the years 2015 and 2019, including already accepte

BACKGROUND: In addition to currently available modalities of intracorporeal lithotripsy (ultrasonic, electrohydraulic, and laser), a new ballistic lithotriptor known as the Swiss Lithoclast has recently gained attention. This study reports our experience with the Swiss Lithoclast in the endoscopic management of urinary calculi.
METHODS: A total of 51 patients with urinary calculi were treated with the Swiss Lithoclast; one patient with a renal calculus, 28 with ureteral calculi, and 22 with lower urinary tract (bladder, urethra and Kock pouch) calculi.
RESULTS: The Lithoclast successfully fr

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the stone ablation rate and direct thermal damage from thulium fiber laser (TFL) lithotripsy using continuous (C) and burst (B) lasing techniques on an in vitro ureteral model.
METHODS: The TFL Drive (Coloplast, Humlebaek, Denmark) was used in an in vitro saline-submerged ureteral model. Ten participants, including five junior and five experienced urologists, conducted the experimental setup with 7 different settings comparing two lasing techniques: steady-state lasing (0.5 J/10 Hz = 5W for 300 s and 0.5 J/20 Hz = 10W for 150 s) and burst, intermittent 5 s on/off lasing

PURPOSE: To compare the curative effects of ureteroscopic lithotripsy and laparoscopic ureterolithotomy for unilateral upper ureteral stones, and to explore optimal surgical indications and skills.
METHODS: Fifty cases of unilateral upper ureteral stones were randomly divided into two groups: one group underwent ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy under epidural or lumbar anesthesia (n=25), and another group underwent laparoscopic ureterolithotomy under general anesthesia (n=25). Double-J stent was routinely indwelled in both groups. Operating time, postoperative hospitalization time, sto

We present a rare case of a hydrophilic guidewire looping and entrapment in the ureter of a patient with an impacted stone in the proximal ureter during a simple double-J stent insertion. Looping of guidewire is a rare complication in urology and only few cases have been described. In that case, release and removal of the entrapped guidewire was possible only after one step fragmentation of the stone with laser lithotripsy.

In this paper, we aimed to verify the efficiency and functionality of the new Soltive Thulium Fiber Laser (TFL) in the treatment of urinary stones. The Soltive Laser System was used in 17 urolithiasis cases: 10 renal, 5 ureteral, and 2 bladder stone patients. The average stone size was 13.1 mm (ranging between 11-29 mm) for the kidney, 8 mm (ranging between 6-12 mm) for the ureter, and 31 mm (ranging between 27-34 mm) for the bladder. Only single calculi patients were included in the study. We used 100 and 150 μm core-diameters fibers (CDF). Three settings were applied: 0.15 J/100 Hz for "fine

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of holmium laser energy on canine uroliths and porcine urethra.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Uroliths of known composition and fresh cadaveric urethra were exposed to holmium laser energy. Urolith fragmentation times and depth of urethral lesions were determined.
RESULTS: Overall mean fragmentation time was 11.8 +/- 8.01 seconds. Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) and urate uroliths had significantly shorter fragmentation times compared to other uroliths. Fragmentation time of MAP uroliths irradiated with 1.2 J/pulse was significantly lo

A 19-year-old man complaining of anuria for 1 day was presented. A ureteral stent was indwelled 3 months ago for preventing ureteral obstruction and protecting kidney function. Abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a solitary pelvic ectopic kidney (PEK) and severe hydronephrosis. And the ureteral stent was covered by encrustations which caused ureteral obstruction. The stent had been retained in his ureter for more than 3 months until he was admitted. It couldn't be removed after shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) or flexible ureteroscope laser lithotripsy (f-URS). Finally, we had to

In-vitro experimental parametric studies of laser ablation using natural sialoliths and artificial stones have been performed toward an efficient laser treatment of sialolithiasis. Surface microstructure and water adsorption become critical for coupling high power pulsed Ho:YAG laser radiation (λ = 2080 nm, τ ∼250 μsec), inducing ablative interactions and stone fragmentation. Results reveal a generic trend, with single pulse laser energy density threshold for sialolith ablative erosion at ∼200 J cm-2 (corresponding to intensity ∼800 kW cm-2 ) and fragmentation rates reaching ∼1 mm/pulse at ∼24
