UNLABELLED: The aim of this paper is to compare the effect of nebulized magnesium sulfate to nebulized salbutamol and salbutamol/magnesium sulfate on successful discharge from the emergency department. A total of 56 infants were included in this double-blinded, prospective study. Infants were grouped according to the nebulized treatment they received: group 1-salbutamol/normal saline, group 2-magnesium sulfate and normal saline, and group 3-salbutamol plus magnesium sulfate. Heart beat, bronchiolitis, clinical severity scores (CSS), and oxygen saturation of the patients were determined before …

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship between serum magnesium (Mg) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in heart failure (HF).
AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the relationship, if any, between serum Mg and CRP in HF patients and, concomitantly, to test a hypothesis that Mg supplementation might affect serum CRP levels.
METHODS: Serum Mg and CRP were evaluated in 68 patients with chronic systolic HF leading to hospital admission and 65 patients requiring hospitalization for other causes. Following 5 weeks, serum Mg, CRP and intracellular Mg were reevaluated in 17 HF patients after admin…

Magnesium ions (Mg2+) are pivotal in the transfer, storage and utilization of energy; Mg2+ regulates and catalyzes some 300-odd enzyme systems in mammals. The intracellular level of free Mg2+ ([Mg2+]i) regulates intermediary metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis and structure, cell growth, reproduction, and membrane structure. Mg2+ has numerous physiological roles among which are control of neuronal activity, cardiac excitability, neuromuscular transmission, muscular contraction, vasomotor tone, blood pressure and peripheral blood flow. Mg2+ modulates and controls cell Ca2+ entry and Ca2+ release …

The magnesium status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease and in 30 controls. Subjects with Crohn's disease had lower concentrations of magnesium in muscle biopsy specimens (p less than 0.001), mononuclear cells (p less than 0.05), and in urine collected during 24 h (p less than 0.001) as compared with controls. After intravenous infusion of 60 mmol magnesium and 80 mmol potassium to 17 subjects with Crohn's disease a significant increase in concentrations of magnesium in muscle specimens (p less than 0.05), mononuclear cells (p less than 0.01), and plasma (p less than 0.01) was n…

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a possible etiologic factor contributing to neonatal hypocalcemia. In adults, parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion is negatively feedback regulated by acute changes in serum Mg concentration, but paradoxically Mg deficiency may lead to functional hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia. We hypothesized that in neonates, Mg administration will cause changes in PTH secretion and serum Ca concentration that will be inversely related to serum Mg status. We also hypothesized that Mg administration will result in increased calcitonin (CT) secretion. Thirty-nine newborn infant…

The effects of a diet enriched in magnesium were studied in mineralocorticoid DOCA-salt hypertensive rats from 6 to 15 weeks old, during the development of hypertension. A standard normomagnesic diet with 0.21% Mg and 0.24% Na, equilibrated in minerals and vitamins is used as a control diet. The high magnesium diet is the same standard diet enriched in magnesium with a content of 0.75% Mg. That in magnesium enriched diet lessens the level of blood pressure. This effect appears within 2 weeks and is long lasting. Increase of urinary sodium is observed but without any modification of sodium bala…

There is considerable uncertainty about the interrelated effects of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and fluoride (F) on hypocalcification of the skeleton and Ca accumulation in vital soft tissues. This paper describes experiments with rats fed a diet deficient in Ca and Mg, the latter deficiency being accentuated by a low potassium content. For different groups the drinking water was supplemented with Ca, Mg, F, Ca + F or Mg + F; Ca and F were supplied as chemically compatible compounds. At the end of the 54-d experiment, plasma Ca was strongly reduced in the Ca-deficient groups. Plasma Mg was re…

Prolonged treatment of premature infants with the potent diuretic furosemide has resulted in hypercalciuria, sometimes with renal calcinosis and other complications. Furosemide was administered to weanling rats to explore its effect on magnesium and calcium metabolism. The animals were fed purified diets providing 40 mg magnesium/100 g diet or 10 mg magnesium/100 g. Half of each dietary group (40-F or 10-F) received 18 doses of furosemide, 20 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneally between days 7 and 35, and half received normal saline intraperitoneally (40-O or 10-O). Furosemide had little effec…

The effects of a high dose of ascorbic acid superimposed on a low magnesium diet were studied for the first time. Young male guinea pigs were fed for six weeks two diets containing 3000 or 600 ppm magnesium: half in each group was supplemented with a daily oral dose of either 3 mg or 100 mg ascorbic acid per 100 g body weight. No treatment effects were found in serum copper and ceruloplasmin, spleen copper, bone calcium, kidney magnesium, and brain calcium and magnesium contents. Both bone copper and brain ascorbic acid contents of the group fed the normal ascorbic acid/low magnesium diet were…

It has been suggested earlier that the serum Mg value cannot be considered as a reliable index indicating the body Mg status and that pigs may suffer from Mg deficiency despite the fact that the food Mg content is distinctly higher than the requirement level given by the Agricultural Research Council and National Research Council. In this study the effect of the food Mg level on the serum Mg value was more widely investigated and, simultaneously, the effect of the food Mg level on the serum Mg:Ca and K value was studied. Bone Mg contents were also determined to make sure in which groups the pi

BACKGROUND: Magnesium sulfate is highly effective for the prophylactic treatment of preeclampsia with severe features, as well as the prevention of recurrent eclamptic seizures. The consequences of developing eclampsia despite treatment with magnesium sulfate prophylaxis have received little attention.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe maternal and perinatal consequences in patients who develop eclampsia despite treatment with magnesium sulfate therapy.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of all patients with eclampsia over 13 years at a single institution. Eclampsia was diagnosed …

Magnesium (Mg), the second most abundant intracellular cation, plays critical roles in over 600 enzymatic reactions and influences multiple physiological systems, including endocrine, nervous, cardiovascular, and immune function. Despite its manifold importance, assessing Mg status remains a significant challenge in clinical practice and epidemiological research due to the predominantly intracellular distribution of Mg, with less than 1-2 percent present in blood and extracellular fluid. This chapter examines current measures of Mg status (serum/plasma, free ionized, urine), intracellular meas…

Significant progress has been observed in recent decades, elucidating the biochemical, cellular, and molecular pathways that regulate the 10% inorganic ions, such as Na, K, Ca, HCO3, Cl, and fluid balance in both health and diseases. However, magnesium (Mg), a forgotten electrolyte, despite its critical role as the calcium antagonist found in nature with clinically relevant data on Mg disorders, was one of the least used ions till the late twentieth century. The underappreciation of the clinical importance of Mg may stem from a lack of detailed knowledge about its regulation at the subcellular…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Magnesium plays an indispensable role in human health and is intricately involved in many crucial physiological and metabolic pathways. True biochemical magnesium deficiency is rarely encountered in clinical practice but subclinical and functional deficiency of magnesium appears to be more common and is reported in many chronic health disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: Estimating magnesium status is challenging and best evaluated by a combination of serum magnesium, urinary magnesium, and dietary magnesium intake. Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated the effi…

Magnesium is ubiquitous in nature. It sits at the origin of the food chain, occupying the center of chlorophyl in plants. In humans, magnesium is critical to diverse molecular and catalytic processes, including energy transfer and maintenance of the genome. Despite its abundance, hypomagnesemia is common and often goes undiagnosed. This is in spite of epidemiologic data linking low magnesium with chronic diseases including diabetes mellitus. Clinically significant hypermagnesemia is encountered less frequently, but the presentation may be dramatic. Advances in molecular biology and the elucida…

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle cramps are common and often occur in association with pregnancy, advanced age, exercise or motor neuron disorders (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Typically, such cramps have no obvious underlying pathology, and so are termed idiopathic. Magnesium supplements are marketed for the prophylaxis of cramps but the efficacy of magnesium for this purpose remains unclear. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2012, and performed to identify and incorporate more recent studies.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of magnesium supplementation compar…
