Pregnancy risks and contraceptive use among postpartum mothers in Cameroon: implications for improving the coverage of postpartum family planning services.

BACKGROUND: The health hazards of short inter-birth intervals are severe in Cameroon. One-quarter of inter-birth intervals are less than 24 months and the probability of death before age 5 for children born after a short interval is double that associated with intervals of 36-47 months. We examine the risk of an unintended pregnancy in the 18 months following childbirth in Cameroon, taking into account the protective effects of lactational amenorrhea, delayed resumption of sex as well as contraceptive use. METHODS: Data from 3007 postpartum women in the nationally representative 2018 Cameroon

Understanding the experience of living with spinal muscular atrophy: a qualitative description.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive motor neuron disease caused by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord. The disorder causes weakness and wasting of voluntary muscles. The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of living with SMA. Strategies used to manage symptoms and progression were also identified. Through e-mail communication, 11 participants were asked to respond to 5 questions about experiences with parents, family, friends, school, and healthcare providers, as well as provide demographic information. Participants were asked

Using Digital Communication Technology to Increase HIV Testing Among Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV continues to disproportionately affect men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW). Undiagnosed HIV is a major driver of HIV transmission rates, and increasing the uptake of regular HIV testing and facilitating timely initiation of HIV treatment is a global HIV prevention priority. However, MSM and TW experience a range of barriers that limit their access to testing and other prevention services. Given their growing ubiquity, digital communication technologies are increasingly being used to support HIV prevention efforts, and a growing number of studies have tria

Modelling the relationship between industrial air pollution and perceived health effects of households in the three most air-polluted cities of Pakistan.

Industrialization contributes to economic growth; however, its negative impacts cannot be overlooked. The emission of toxic pollutants into the atmosphere by industries poses a serious threat to both environmental and human health. We conducted a field study in the top three most polluted cities of Pakistan to quantify the impacts of industrial air pollution on the perceived health effects of households. We also analyzed the factors influencing households' adoption of preventive practices to mitigate the effects of air pollution. Data were collected from households residing in both industrial

Fetal hemodynamics and adverse outcome in primary school-aged children with fetal growth restriction: a prospective longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal growth restriction is associated with short-term and long-term mortality and morbidity. We hypothesized that adverse outcome in children with fetal growth restriction at primary school age is associated with fetoplacental circulatory abnormalities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Comprehensive ultrasonographic assessment of fetoplacental hemodynamics was performed in 72 growth-restricted fetuses prenatally, and short-term outcome data were collected. At the median age of 9 years, mortality and morbidity were determined using medical charts and questionnaires. The impact of abnormal

Mosaic trisomy 4: Long-term outcome on the first reported liveborn.

In a previous report, we described the first liveborn with trisomy 4 mosaicism [Marion et al. (1990) Am J Med Genet 37:362-365]. To our knowledge, since our original report, there have been only four additional reports of a prenatal diagnosis of mosaic trisomy 4 resulting in a liveborn child [Hsu et al. (1997) Prenat Diag 17:201-242; Kuchinka et al. (2001) Prenat Diag 21:36-39; Wieczorek et al. (2003) Prenat Diag 23:128-133; Zaslav et al. (2000) Am J Med Genet 95:381-384]. Three of the more recent reports lacked confirmation of the mosaicism in tissue samples collected from the child after del

Neurosurgical management of proton beam therapy-induced moyamoya syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Proton beam therapy (PBT) is an increasingly used treatment modality for pediatric patients with brain tumors. Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) is well recognized as a complication of traditional photon radiotherapy, however its association with PBT is less well described. The authors discuss their initial experience with the neurosurgical management of MMS secondary to PBT in a large-volume pediatric neurovascular service. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective case review of consecutive children referred for neurosurgical management of MMS after PBT between 2009 and 2022. Patient

Prosociality from early adolescence to young adulthood: A longitudinal study of individuals with a history of language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal research into the development of prosociality contributes vitally to understanding of individual differences in psychosocial outcomes. Most of the research to date has been concerned with prosocial behaviour in typically developing young people; much less has been directed to the course of development in individuals with developmental disorders. AIMS: This study reports a longitudinal investigation of prosocial behaviour in young people with language impairment (LI), and compares trajectories of development to typically developing age-matched peers (AMPs). METHODS AN

Evaluating large language models in specialized myopia knowledge and clinical reasoning.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is a major global public health concern, and the growing use of LLMs for health consultation makes the accuracy of their myopia-related responses increasingly important. Existing ophthalmic LLM studies have largely focused on image-based applications and mixed ocular diseases, with limited evaluation of myopia-specific reasoning. Yet myopia-related inquiries span both breadth and depth, from specialized differential considerations to common issues in prevention, control, and public education. This study aimed to assess mainstream LLMs across multiple levels of myopia-related

Comparing acculturation scales and their relationship to cancer screening among older Mexican-American women.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic women in the United States are less likely to participate in breast and cervical cancer screening than women of other racial and ethnic groups. To plan appropriate interventions requires an understanding of the barriers to participation, including those of acculturation and assimilation. Few studies have examined the effects of acculturation and assimilation on the cancer-screening behavior of Mexican-American women. PURPOSE: Because of the extensive use of the Cuellar acculturation scale and the more recent use of the Hazuda scale, we explore the utility of these two mea

Infant feeding method and special educational need in 191,745 Scottish schoolchildren: A national, population cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While special educational needs (SEN) are increasingly recorded among schoolchildren, infant breastfeeding has been associated with reduced incidence of childhood physical and mental health problems. This study investigated relationships between infant feeding method and risk of all-cause and cause-specific SEN. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A population cohort of schoolchildren in Scotland was constructed by linking together health (maternity, birth, and health visitor records) and education (annual school pupil census) databases. Inclusion was restricted to singleton children, born in S
