The reports of serious corneal infection associated with hydrogel lens wear prompted us to explore the level of sterility of the distilled water used by lens wearers in our practice. Fifty patients supplied samples of their partially-used distilled water for testing. Of the samples, 12% were found to be contaminated. Five samples of previously unopened distilled water were tested and no growth was found. We recommend that patients do not use distilled water for the care of hydrogel contact lenses. Rather, sterile unit dose or multi-dose (aerosol) nonpreserved, or preserved salines can be used.

The integrity of the bladder neck was assessed in 98 continent women. Radiological and physiological evidence showed that half of these women had an incompetent bladder neck, but they were still continent. The rate of endoscopically confirmed gastric ulcer relapse was compared in two groups of patients with newly healed benign gastric ulcers, receiving either cimetidine 400 mg nocte or matching placebo, over a period of 1 year. Six of 24 (25%) patients on cimetidine and 16 of 27 (59%) patients on placebo had endoscopically confirmed relapse. These included two patients in each group with asymptomatic relapses. The difference in the rate of relapse between the two groups was statistically significant (P = 0.01).

A case is reported of successful conception and completion of pregnancy in a patient with intestinal failure due to Crohn's disease, nourished entirely by home parenteral nutrition. The nutritional regimen included both dextrose and lipid as calorie sources, together with synthetic amino acids and appropriate additives. Thirty-four drug addicts, aged 20 - 24 years, with a history of 4 - 8 years of intravenous heroin abuse, were randomly assigned either to a methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) (17) or to an untreated group (17). Seventy patients with preterm labor and intact membranes were initially treated with ritodrine hydrochloride to delay preterm delivery. Tocolysis beyond 24 hours was achieved in 59 patients. Fifty-five of the 59 patients were then placed on either oral ritodrine or placebo as maintenance therapy in a randomized double-blind manner. The hypotensive effect of Timolol eye drops (0.25 and 0.50%) in maintenance treatment of 64 patients with elevated intraocular pressure has been studied. Medical histories, neurological examinations and electroencephalograms of 25 methadone-maintained subjects were compared with those of 25 abstinent controls. Comparisons on all measures failed to show significant differences between groups. The incidence of abnormalities was low for all subjects. None of the observed conditions appeared to involve methadone in their etiology.
