A community-based cross-sectional study on the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment was conducted between July and August 1990 in three rural districts in Ségou region, Mali. In a rural area in Mali, 453 children were randomly enrolled in a study comparing the safety and the immunogenicity of a combined yellow-fever-measles freeze dried vaccine with each yellow-fever and measles separate administration. We report 3 clinical observations of neuromeningeal cryptococcosis which occurred without any immunodepression related to HIV infection. Our patients were male. They did not present any particular medical history indicating a diagnosis of cryptococcosis. Nevertheless we found a professional exposure to the risk of inhalation of C. neoformans capsules.
