Tridimensional assessment of the mandibular angle in patients with different skeletal patterns by cone-beam computed tomography scans: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Since the muscles of chewing are involved in the region of the mandibular angle, important structures in surgical and orthodontic procedures, to study its morphological aspects and the possible influence of different patterns of skeletal development would be of interest. Thus, this study aimed to assess the influence of patient characteristics - such as sex, skeletal malocclusion (Class I, Class II, and Class III) and facial type (brachycephalic, mesocephalic, and dolichocephalic) - on the width, height, thickness, and volume of the mandibular angle, using cone-beam computed tomogr

Sagittal Skeletal Malocclusions and Sleep Quality in Children Without Orofacial Dysfunction.

This study examined whether sagittal skeletal malocclusions influence sleep quality in children independently of orofacial functional disorders. A total of 164 children (7-13 y) without orofacial dysfunction were classified as class I, II, or III according to cephalometric analysis. Sleep quality was assessed with the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). For each group, age, family income, SNB angle (mandibular position), SN-GoGn and FMA angles (vertical dimensions), and 2D airway measurements were compared. Correlations between CSHQ scores, SNB, and vertical dimensions were also eval

[Presurgical orthodontics for facial asymmetry].

As with the treatment of all facial deformities, orthodontic pre-surgical preparation for facial asymmetry should aim at correcting severe occlusal discrepancies not solely on the basis of a narrow occlusal analysis but also in a way that will not disturb the proposed surgical protocol. In addition, facial asymmetries require specific adjustments, difficult to derive and to apply because of their inherent atypical morphological orientation of both alveolar and basal bony support. Three treated cases illustrate different solutions to problems posed by pathological torque: this torque must be co

[Study of asymmetries in the severe antero-posterior disharmonies].

Using the Treil 14 points cephalometric model orthodontists can prepare a complete cranio-facial anatomic assessment at three analytic levels: the framework or envelope, the basal bone and the alveolo-dental arcade. The assessment of border-line surgical antero-posterior dysmorphosis can elucidate interesting depictions of asymmetries, their relation to other malformities, and their genesis. Asymmetry arises from over-growth of one side of the face in all three dimensions of space even if, clinically, it often appears that one dimension is predominately affected. The ortho-morphic cases of Ang

Occlusal characteristics in modern humans with tooth agenesis.

Non-syndromic permanent tooth agenesis affects a significant proportion of the population, especially if third molars are considered. Although tooth agenesis has been linked to a smaller craniofacial size, reduced facial convexity and a shorter skeletal face, the occlusal characteristics of individuals with tooth agenesis remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study investigated potential associations between tooth agenesis and metric occlusal traits in 806 individuals (491 with 4.1 missing teeth per subject, including third molars, and 315 without any tooth agenesis). Dentoskeletal morpho

Novel genes linked to Class II Division 1 malocclusion with mandibular micrognathism.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular micrognathism (MM) is an underdeveloped mandible resulting from complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Prior research focused mainly on the genetic determinants of mandibular retrognathism, not necessarily reflecting micrognathism, thus supporting the need to study MM. This study aimed to explore the inheritance pattern and identify the candidate genes involved in the development and familial transmission of MM. METHODS: Diagnosing probands with MM was based on clinical and lateral cephalometric data. The pedigrees were drawn for 11 identified

Skeletal class II malocclusion caused by mouth breathing in a pediatric patient undergoing treatment by interceptive guidance of occlusion.

A 7-year 10-month-old boy was evaluated for mouth breathing and snoring habits. Examination revealed soft convex tissues, maxillary protrusion, mandibular retrusion, and a class II sagittal osteofascial pattern. The patient failed a water holding test. He was clinically diagnosed with skeletal class II malocclusion caused by mouth breathing. Under interceptive guidance of occlusion (iGo), the malocclusion improved with fixed maxillary expansion using functional appliances and interventional treatment of mouth breathing by lip closure exercises. These treatments enabled the patient to gradually

Orthodontic - Surgical management in a Class II case with idiopathic root resorption.

Patients with root resorption and malocclusion can benefit from orthodontic treatment with or without surgery. However, orthodontics has a risk of inducing or aggravating root resorption, therefore the duration of the treatment is of utmost importance. In this paper, a surgery-first protocol with lower jaw advancement and precise interdental alveolar osteotomies was conducted to accelerate the treatment of a 14-year-old female patient who presented with a Class II division 2 malocclusion, anterior dental crowding and idiopathic root resorption. One week after the surgery, the patient received

Orthodontic treatment in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The literature is briefly reviewed and the presentation and orthodontic treatment of a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is described. Surprisingly, in view of the nature of this collagen disorder, tooth movement appeared to progress normally; there was, however, a problem of mucosal ulceration which was alleviated through regular use of chlorhexidine mouthwash.
