Retromandibular Transparotid Approach for the Treatment of Benign Nontraumatic Conditions of the Mandible. A Retrospective Consecutive Case-Series Study.

The retromandibular transparotid approach enables the most direct access to the central and posterior part of the mandibular ramus including the condylar region. So far it has not been widely used for the management of benign pathology of the mandible. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utilization rate of this approach in the nontrauma setting including the determination of suitable indications for this access. In total, 105 patients with 107 retromandibular transparotid approaches performed in the 6.5 years (from May 2014 to November 2020) were evaluated. Patients suffering from n

Perspectives on craniofacial asymmetry. III. Common and/or well-known causes of asymmetry.

Mandibular asymmetry may be caused by infection or trauma. Unilateral facial paralysis has many causes and Bell's palsy, which is idiopathic, is the most common type. Asymmetric muscle involvement is discussed, including the masseter, temporalis, depressor anguli oris, extraocular, and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Tumors that present asymmetrically are also considered, including the juvenile hemangioma, lymphangioma, osteoma, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and Burkitt's lymphoma. Finally, some miscellaneous conditions are discussed, including fibrous dysplasia, mucus retention phenomenon, electri

Primary Central Intraosseous Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Mandible.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Rarely, MEC may arise primarily within the jaw bones as central intraosseous MEC, whose pathogenesis remains uncertain but may involve malignant transformation of ectopic salivary gland or odontogenic cystic lining. A 31-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic, slowly enlarging mass in the left mandible that had been growing for over a decade. Initial radiographs revealed a multilocular radiolucent lesion, and the patient postponed treatment until progressive growth caused functional impairment. Clin

Pigmented dentinogenic ghost cell tumor: a unique case report and a review of the literature.

Dentinogenic ghost cell tumors are rare tumors, and few cases of them were reported in the literature. The presence of pigment in odontogenic lesions is a rare unexplained histological finding. In this report, we describe a unique case of a 7-year-old girl that was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery complaining of a left mandibular swelling. Clinical examination revealed a huge, ulcerated mass. Both incisional and excisional biopsies revealed a benign infiltrative odontogenic tumor with admixed ameloblast-like cells and pigmented ghost cells, consistent with a pigment

Rotational path removable partial mandibular resection prostheses: A case series of patients with mandibular symphyseal defects.

Rotational path removable partial mandibular resection prostheses (MRPs) offer advantages in the management of patients with acquired symphyseal defects of the mandible, including enhanced esthetics achieved through a reduced number of clasps, the provision of rigid retainers less prone to distortion compared with flexible alternatives, and the ability to engage prominent proximal undercuts in patients lacking buccal undercuts. Additionally, removable partial MRPs represent a suitable treatment option in scenarios where the cost of implant-retained prostheses is prohibitive or in patients wher

Adenoid Ameloblastoma: The Newly Recognized Odontogenic Tumor - A Case Report.

Adenoid ameloblastoma is a newly recognized epithelial odontogenic tumor. Herein, we present the case of a 24-year-old male patient who exhibited swelling in the anterior region and right hemi-mandible. Computed tomography demonstrated the presence of a hypodense osteolytic lesion associated with an impacted tooth. Based on the clinical hypotheses of the dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and ameloblastoma, an incisional biopsy was performed, and the diagnosis of ameloblastoma was rendered. A surgical resection of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination of the specimen re

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma of the mandible.

The Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma exhibits important differences in anatomical distribution, histologic appearance and radiographic findings compared with the classic type of ameloblastoma. We describe a case of desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma localized in the mandibular anterior portion of the jaw, extending posteriorly in the left side. The tumor was expansile, slowly growing and painless. The radiographic finding showed diffuse, radiolucent lesion with cortical bone expansion. Surgical excision was performed and follow-up examination done after two years disclosed no recurrence. The purp

Oral Burkitt's lymphoma--case report.

Burkitt's lymphoma is a poorly differentiated rare and aggressive type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This article reports the case of a male child aged seven years, who was examined at the Odontopediatric Clinic of the UFRN Dentistry Department. The patient presented a tumor in the premolar region of the mandible; teeth were mobile in this region. Radiology revealed a diffuse radioluscent area which was diagnosed histopathologically as Burkitt's lymphoma. The patient was treated with polychemotherapy; complete remission of the disease was attained.

Intraosseous hemangioma of the mandible: a case report and review of the literature.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are benign lesions, occurring often in vertebra and skull. These lesions can present in the head and neck region being the next most common site with a predominance of mandible. There are approximately seventy intraosseous hemangiomas of mandible in literature reported to date. We present an intraosseous hemangioma of the symphysis mandible. We performed a block resection of the mass preserving the mandibular integrity with no complications. There were no recurrences in the follow-up period of 24 months.

Dermoid cyst of the mandible.

A mid-line cyst of the mandible is described which possessed the histological features of a dermoid cyst. This appears to be the first fully documented example of a totally intra-osseous dermoid cyst in the mandible. The pathogenesis of the present lesion is discussed in relation to both the odontogenic and the non-odontogenic cysts that may occur in the mandibular mid-line.

Giant compound odontoma associated with a severely displaced mandibular canine: a case report.

Giant odontomas are infrequently encountered in clinical practice. The objective of this article is to present a well-documented case report with radiographic and surgical images of a compound odontoma arising in the mandibular anterior region. Other salient findings of the case included displacement of multiple proximate teeth, overretention of a primary canine with extensive root resorption, an impacted permanent mandibular canine lying along the inferior cortical plate, and painless clinical expansion of the affected alveolar bone. The lesion was easily enucleated, and the surgical specimen

Small blue round cell tumour masquerading as dental pathology.

This case report delineates a case of female patient in her early 20s who presented with a rapidly proliferating mass in the posterior right mandibular region that evolved over a 4-month temporal interval. The patient's primary symptomatology encompassed progressive mandibular discomfort, masticatory dysfunction, paraesthesia of the inferior labial region, spontaneous haemorrhage from the affected site and dental mobility. The lesion exhibited aggressive growth kinetics and was concomitant with significant osseous alterations. The patient's demographic profile, the anatomical predilection of t

A case of secondary ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible and a comparative review of primary and secondary subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic carcinoma is an extremely rare malignant odontogenic epithelial tumor, which can be categorized into primary ameloblastic carcinoma and secondary ameloblastic carcinoma. The secondary type typically arises from a pre-existing, histologically confirmed benign ameloblastoma. Owing to the scarcity of clinical reports, the epidemiology, treatment, and prognosis of ameloblastic carcinoma remain poorly understood. METHODS: We report and analyze a case of a 49-year-old male with secondary ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible. Based on preoperative pathological examination

A case report and literature analysis of a rare nonossifying fibroma of the mandible.

ABSTRACT RATIONALE: Nonossifying fibroma (NOF) is one of the benign bone tumors in adolescents, and it rarely occurs in the jawbone. According to the site of onset, it is divided into the cortical type and the medullary type. Currently, there is no case report of medullary NOF in the mandible of the elderly. Through the description of the diagnosis and treatment experience of this case, combined with literature analysis, it provides help for clinical diagnosis and treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 69-year-old male who was treated for discomfort due to distension in the right mand
