[The phantom breast syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The phantom breast syndrome (PBS) is a complication of mastectomy which consists of a sensation of breast persistence after mastectomy. MATERIALS, PATIENTS AND METHODS: The incidence, clinical course and location of PBS in 97 operated women were studied for a 15-year period. All women were interviewed in postoperative follow-up controls after mastectomy. RESULTS: The incidence of PBS was 29 patients out of the 97 total. The syndrome was present for more than 48 months in eleven of these patients. In most cases the location of "phantom sensations" was the nipple (15 cases) and the

Effects of surgical stimulation on the apnoeic thresholds for carbon dioxide during anaesthesia with sevoflurane.

Mechanical hyperventilation may produce hypocapnic apnoea below the carbon dioxide off-switch threshold whereas an increase in arterial PCO2 after post-hyperventilation apnoea causes reappearance of respiratory effort above the carbon dioxide on-switch threshold. To study the effects of surgical stimulation on these two thresholds, we have measured end-tidal PCO2 (PE'CO2) at the two thresholds, before and during surgical stimulation, in 14 patients undergoing mastectomy, anaesthetized with sevoflurane (1.2 MAC). Based on the reproducibility of the results, data from 11 patients were analysed a

Isolated Unilateral Ovarian Metastasis from Breast Cancer Demonstrated by 18F-FDG PET/CT.

A 49-year-old premenopausal woman with a history of left modified radical mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection for invasive lobular carcinoma three years ago, underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) due to gradually increasing CA15-9 and CEA levels during routine follow-up. Compared with previous 18F-FDG PET/CT images, the left ovary in the current images showed increased size and radiotracer uptake. Subsequently, total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed, and histopathological evaluation

Synchronous breast and colon cancer: the importance of multidisciplinary team cancer meetings.

A 58-year-old female patient presented with left breast lump. Mammography and ultrasonography were performed, which reported lesions suspicious of malignancy in the left breast and axilla. Core biopsy of the lesions revealed invasive ductal carcinoma with axillary lymph node metastasis. Staging CT scan (thorax, abdomen and pelvis) identified a coexisting neoplasm in the ascending colon. Colonoscopy was performed and the tumour in the ascending colon was biopsied. Histopathological examination revealed adenocarcinoma. In the multidisciplinary team cancer meeting, it was decided to treat the bre

Diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the skull misdiagnosed as skull metastasis in breast cancer patient: one case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraosseous cavernous hemangiomas (PICHs) of the skull are extremely rare. To date, diffuse cranial hemangioma of skull has not been reported. In cancer patients, it is often misdiagnosed as metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we presented a case of a 50-year-old female patient suffering from slightly headache who received breast cancer modified radical mastectomy in 2004, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings revealed abnormal lesions of diffuse skull which were misdiagnosed as skull metastasis, and the relevant literatures were also reviewed. Simultaneous osteonecrosis and osteomyelitis in a patient with cancer of the breast.

Breast cancer is generally managed surgically with adjuvant agents which include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bisphosphonate therapy. However, some of these adjuvant therapies may cause adverse events, including wound infection, neutropenia, bone marrow suppression and fever. The simultaneous presentation of osteonecrosis and osteomyelitis has not previously been described in patients with breast cancer undergoing hormone therapy and chemotherapy. We report a patient with breast cancer who developed bone infarcts in both legs as well as osteomyelitis in the right distal tibi

Metastatic metaplastic carcinoma of the breast: diagnosis by bronchial brush cytology.

Metaplastic carcinoma of the female breast is an uncommon lesion that may metastasize to body sites. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pulmonary metastasis diagnosed on bronchial brush cytology. The patient presented with pulmonary symptomatology 1 yr and 3 mo after a left modified radical mastectomy for breast carcinoma. Bronchoscopic examination revealed an endobronchial lesion partially obstructing the bronchus intermedius. Bronchial brush cytology showed the presence of nonkeratinizing squamous tumor cells admixed with a few scattered clusters of tumor cells with glandul

Ketamine Versus Magnesium Sulphate as Adjuvants to Bupivacaine in Pectoral Nerve Blocks for Mastectomy: A Randomized, Double-Blind Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pectoral nerve blocks (PECS) provide effective regional analgesia after mastectomy, but the optimal adjuvant remains unclear. This study compared ketamine and magnesium sulphate as adjuvants to bupivacaine in PECS blocks. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind trial, 72 patients scheduled for modified radical mastectomy were randomized into 3 equal groups (n = 24). Group A received 0.25% bupivacaine with saline (control); Groups B and C received bupivacaine with ketamine or magnesium sulphate, respectively. The primary outcome was time to first rescue analgesia; secondary outco

Triple-negative accessory breast cancer occurring concurrently with primary invasive breast carcinoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Accessory breast cancer (ABC) is an extremely rare condition, particularly the presence of triple-negative ABC with ipsilateral invasive in situ breast cancer. Binary breast tumors are controversial in terms of surgical methods and comprehensive treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We share the case of a 64-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with an underarm mass for 3 months. Ultrasonography and computed tomography suggested possible breast cancer with axillary lymph node metastasis. The patient underwent a left modified radical mastectomy combined with axillary lymph node di

Onychomadesis associated with chemotherapy: case report and mini literature review.

The side effects of chemotherapy drugs have increased in recent years, and some side effects can lead to onychomadesis. A 72-year-old woman who was diagnosed with an invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast underwent a modified radical mastectomy in April 2015, followed by chemotherapy with capecitabine and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel). Subsequently, the patient experienced palmoplantar redness, pain, onycholysis, a transparent serous exudate, and onychomadesis. The chemotherapy was discontinued, and the patient was treated with oral vitamin B6, a polymyxin ointm

Prevalence of phantom breast pain and sensation among postmastectomy patients suffering from breast cancer: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of newer treatment modalities, survival rate among breast cancer patients has improved substantially over the last few years. Hence, the concern has also shifted to the impact of treatment, side effects, and the morbidities arising from disease management. Among them is the development of phantom breast pain (PBP) and sensation (PBS) after mastectomy. METHODS: After obtaining ethical committee approval, 80 patients suffering from carcinoma breast undergoing modified radical mastectomy were enrolled into the study. They were assessed preoperatively for presence of b

Local recurrence of breast cancer in the stereotactic core needle biopsy site: case reports and review of the literature.

Early mammographic detection of nonpalpable breast lesions has led to the increasing use of stereotactic core biopsies for tissue diagnosis. Tumor seeding the needle tract is a theorectical concern; the incidence and clinical significance of this potential complication are unknown. We report three cases of subcutaneous breast cancer recurrence at the stereotactic biopsy site after definitive treatment of the primary breast tumor. Two cases were clinically evident and relevant; the third was detected in the preclinical, microscopic state. All three patients underwent multiple passes during ster

Pathogenesis and treatment of Paget's disease of the breast.

Fifty cases of Paget's disease of the breast treated surgically at The Johns Hopkins Hospital during the past 30 years were studied. Nineteen patients had Paget's disease confined to the nipple and 31 had an associated palpable tumor. An underlying intraductal or infiltrating duct carcinoma of the breast was present in each case. In six cases, the underlying tumor was 2 cm or more from the nipple with no apparent anatomic connection to the Paget lesion, and one case was encountered in whom intradermal Paget's disease develop in the area of a congenitally absent nipple. These findings support t

Lobular breast cancer in men: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Lobular breast cancer in men is an extremely infrequent occurrence due to the lack of lobules and acini in the male breast. Such a rare case is described here. CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old patient presented with a sizeable lesion in the right breast, which proved to be a lobular carcinoma. Genetic studies excluded Klinefelter's syndrome, though revealing an interesting genetic multiformity feature. This case represented a lobular carcinoma in a genotypically male patient under no exogenous or endogenous estrogenic influence. CONCLUSIONS: The increasing number of male lobular breast

Six-year results of a multimodality treatment strategy for locally advanced breast cancer.

Between 1976 and 1982, 59 patients with locally advanced breast cancer were treated with preoperative supervoltage radiotherapy, adjuvant preoperative and postoperative hormonochemotherapy, and modified radical mastectomy. Systemic treatment, which was started simultaneously with radiotherapy, consisted of a combination of daily oral tamoxifen and a monthly alternation of Doxorubicin + vincristine and cyclophosphamide + methotrexate + 5-fluorouracil (CMF). One of each cycle was given preoperatively at half dosage and five of each were repeated postoperatively at full dosage. All patients becam

Intraoperative pectoral block versus thoracic paravertebral block for postoperative analgesia after breast cancer surgery: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: With the increasing rate of breast cancer surgery, the pain management of these patients gains importance. The aim of this study is to compare the ultrasound (US) guided thoracic paravertebral block (TPV) versus intraoperative pectoral nerve block (PECS) with a low volume local anaesthetic for postoperative analgesia after breast cancer surgery. A total of 41 patients underwent mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy or modified radical mastectomy were included in this randomized controlled, single-blinded trial. The patients were divided into two groups as PECS and T
