Liposarcomas are extremely rare in the oral cavity and mainly observed in the buccal mucosa, tongue, floor of the mouth, gingiva, and lips, while those occurring in the jaws have not been reported so far. Clinically, the initial presentation of liposarcoma is usually a painless soft tissue mass. The aim of this study was to report a case of liposarcoma with osteolysis of the maxilla as the first symptom, and review the relevant literature to summarize its clinical features, imaging features, pathological features and treatment methods.

Mucormycosis is a rare, invasive fungal infection that progresses aggressively and requires prompt surgery and appropriate treatment. The number of cases of mucormycosis in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients has recently increased, and patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus are particularly at an elevated risk of infection. This report presents a case of mucormycosis-related osteomyelitis of the maxilla in a 37-year-old man with diabetes mellitus. The patient complained of severe and persistent pain in the right maxilla, accompanied by increased tooth mobility and headache. On …

Brown's tumor is a benign bone lesion that occurs in the setting of hyperparathyroidism and can affect the facial skeleton. It often presents as a single lesion and is usually less than 3 centimeters. To our knowledge, no cases have been reported to have bilateral involvement of the maxilla and mandible with the largest dimension measuring over 7 centimeters. This report describes such a case and provides a review of the literature.

Gorham's disease is a rare condition characterized by progressive osteolysis of bone ultimately resulting in the total disappearance of bone. The etiology is unknown and the disease predominantly affects the pelvis, humerus, and axial skeleton. Because of its unusual, ambiguous presentation and rare occurrence, the disorder goes unrecognized and is often masqueraded by other disorders. The diagnosis of this disorder is by exclusion. About 50 cases of Gorham's disease involving the maxillofacial region are reported to date and most of them involve the mandible. Exclusive involvement of maxilla …

Primary hyperparathyroidism presenting with diffuse skeletal involvement, such as discrete osteoclastic bone lesions, is rare. We describe a 35-year-old woman who presented with a left mandibular mass that rapidly enlarged over 3 weeks. Radiological, histological, and biochemical investigations led to the diagnosis of brown tumor secondary to primary hyperparathyroidism. A neck ultrasound revealed a 1.5 × 2.3 × 4.6 cm mass at the lower pole of the left thyroid lobe, suggestive of a parathyroid adenoma. Bone scan showed additional abnormal foci of increased uptake in the maxilla, both femora, s…

INTRODUCTION: Clinical evaluation of the midface including the paranasal and upper lip regions is highly subjective and complex. Traditional and 3-dimensional cephalometrics were not developed with the clinical appearance of these midfacial areas in mind and are therefore inappropriate surrogates for the clinical appearance of the midface, making them unsuitable as aids in diagnosing dentofacial deformities. The aim of this study was to evaluate traditional as well as newly defined landmarks and measurements and their correlation with clinical appearance of the midface.
METHODS: Fifty-two sub

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection with acute, aggressive, and invasive nature, seen in immunocompromised/debilitated patients, especially with diabetes mellitus. The key to successful therapy is the early diagnosis of signs and symptoms of the disease, correction of the underlying medical disorder(s), and aggressive medical and surgical intervention. The case presented here is mucormycotic osteomyelitis of the nasomaxillary-zygomatic complex following trauma in a middle-aged man. Preoperative amphotericin B therapy along with surgical resection of necrotic tissue was done f…

OBJECTIVE: Development of human dentition has been used as a predictor for evaluating the growth and maturity of an individual. It is fairly identical in a specific population, but the effect of development on subjects with dental anomalies had not been fully explored, particularly on subjects with supernumerary teeth (ST). This study hence aims to evaluate the dental development of children with and without ST.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sample size calculation was conducted and 320 radiographs of subjects with and without supernumerary teeth (ST) were obtained from the archives of a teaching ho

OBJECTIVES: To determine prognostic factors in gingivo-alveolar squamous cell carcinoma of the maxilla (GA-SCC-M), and particularly the prognostic value of both vertical and antero-posterior tumor spread.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our retrospective study included all naïve-treatment patients treated in our center between 2006 and 2013 for GA-SCC-M. Posterior involvement was considered when the tumor extended behind the mesial side of the first maxillary molar. Spread posterior to the maxillary tuberosity was defined by the spread to at least one of the following structures: pterygomaxillary fissu…

Plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is an aggressive form of multiple myeloma where there is hematogenous spread of abnormal plasma cells into the periphery. This is opposed to multiple myeloma, where the abnormal plasma cells stay in the bone marrow. PCL is more common in males than females, and is also more common in African-Americans than Caucasians. Signs and symptoms of PCL include, but are not limited to, renal insufficiency, hypercalcemia, anemia, lytic bone lesions, thrombocytopenia, hepatomegaly, and splenomegaly. Here, we discussed a case of a 71-year-old Caucasian female recently diagnosed w

BACKGROUND: The management of bisphosphonate related necrosis of the jaw has become clinical routine. While approximately two thirds of the lesions are in the mandible, one third is located in the maxilla. In 40-50 % of maxillary necrosis the maxillary sinus is involved, leading to maxillary sinusitis and oro-antral communications.
METHODS: This retrospective single center study includes all patients with diagnosis of BP-ONJ of the maxilla and concomitant maxillary sinusitis. The information collected includes age, gender, primary disease, bisphosphonate intake, involving type of bisphosphona…

Bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the mandible and/or maxilla is an increasingly recognized, though still rare complication of bisphosphonate therapy. In the present case, the patient presented with a seven-month history of maxillary sinusitis and pain, and was originally diagnosed with a bony metastasis from her primary breast cancer. However, surgical excision and biopsy led to a diagnosis of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the maxilla. As bisphosphonates are often prescribed for patients with metastatic disease, it is important to recognize that bisphosphonate-induced osteonec…
