Under the surface: Correlates with maxillary sinus shape.

Despite the central role that the maxillary sinus plays in facial architecture, its shape has never been robustly analyzed in part due to its amorphous morphology and the lack of repeatable landmarks. While previous research has examined correlations between sinus volume and two-dimensional measurements with factors like sex, age, and environmental influences, less is known about finer structural variations, such as trabeculation and surface complexity, in relation to these variables. This study aimed to explore how maxillary sinus size and shape correlate with factors such as age, sex, tobacc…

Ectopic Tooth in the Maxillary Sinus: A Rare Case.

The presence of an ectopic tooth in the maxillary sinus is a rare condition. The term ectopic tooth refers to a clinical condition marked by the presence of a tooth in an atypical location, away from its normal anatomical site. In the present case, the surgical removal of an ectopic tooth in the left maxillary sinus is described in a 24-year-old woman. This article discusses possible etiological factors, symptomatology, the role of imaging methods, and treatment approaches in the context of the literature.

Dentigerous cyst in the medial wall of maxillary sinus.

This is the image of dentigerous cyst detected in the medial wall of maxillary sinus, a rare location for the mentioned cyst, which emphasizes the superiority of radiographic features from the site of the lesion. Moreover, the present case showed no facial asymmetry despite the extension of the lesion.

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol granuloma is not a common entity in the paranasal sinuses. It is a foreign body reaction to the cholesterol crystal deposition. Mostly associated with chronic middle ear diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports a case of cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary sinus. A 23-year-old Asian man presented with cough, nasal obstruction, and postnasal discharge. On endoscopy, there was a mass protruding from the right maxillary ostium. On computed tomograpy imaging, there was a polypoidal mass in the right maxillary sinus. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed, the c…

Maxillary sinus actinomycosis: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

The authors present a case of maxillary sinus actinomycosis in a young adult woman. This is a rare condition whose unspecific clinical presentation makes its diagnosis challenging. In this case, the diagnosis was given by the identification of Actinomyces colonies in samples of infected tissue.Treatment consisted of a combined medical and surgical approach. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed to remove diseased mucosa and to aerate the involved sinuses, followed by long-term antibiotic therapy. No recurrence of the disease was observed during follow-up.

A rare case of Ewing's sarcoma of the maxillary sinus.

Ewing's sarcoma is generally an aggressive, poorly differentiated bone and soft tissue tumor affecting children and young adults, it account … mography (CT) scan showed a mixed lytic and condensing lesional tissue process centered on the left maxillary sinus, heterogeneously enhanced after contrast injection, lysing the walls of the sinus extended to the homolateral nasal cavity and slightly infiltrating the adjacent soft tissues. An incisional biopsy was performed and the pathological study proved that …

Aspergillosis of the Maxillary Sinus Associated With Dental Implant.

Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by the fungus Aspergillus; this disease frequently involves the lungs and occasionally the maxillary sinus. Aspergillosis in the maxillary sinus usually has the characteristics of a noninvasive form. It has been suggested that spores of aspergillus can be inhaled into the maxillary sinus via the osteomeatal complex or via an oroantral fistula after dental procedures, such as an extraction. However, maxillary aspergillosis related to implant installation has rarely been reported. This report regards unusual cases of maxillary aspergillosis associated wit…

A Rare Case of Hodgkin Lymphoma of the Maxillary Sinus.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is an uncommon B-cell malignant disease. It usually presents with mediastinal and/or laterocervical lymph node localization, while primary extranodal HL is a rare entity giving rise to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. It rarely presents as just extranodal localization, so its presence within the maxillary sinus without any lymphadenopathy is exceptional. Given the rarity of this localization, there is no standard treatment for maxillary sinus HL. We present a case of a patient with extranodal HL of the right maxillary sinus treated with primary surgery followed by a…

Rare case of metastatic adenocarcinoma to the maxillary sinus.

Colorectal carcinoma metastases to the head and neck are exceedingly rare. Patients may present with vague symptoms that may lead to a delay in diagnosis. We report the case of a 51-year-old man with a known history of stage IIIB colorectal adenocarcinoma who presented with right-sided molar tooth bleeding and right-sided palate swelling that led to difficulty speaking, eating and weight-loss of 15 pounds. Imaging studies revealed a 3.1×4.8×3 cm mass that was centred around the posterior aspect of the maxilla. Pathology revealed moderately differentiated intestinal type adenocarcinoma of colon

Extranasopharyngeal Angiofibroma of the Natural Ostium of Maxillary Sinus.

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma which occurs in all head and neck regions is extremely rare. Unlike most angiofibromas which show nasal congestion and recurrent epistaxis as their symptoms, extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENAF) may lead to various symptoms depending on their location. Nasal septum is the most frequent site of origin of ENAF. No study of ENAF originating in natural ostium of maxillary sinus has been reported. We present a case of 27-year-old male who has extranasophar- yngeal angiofibroma arising from the natural ostium of maxillary sinus in an adult patient whose symptom w…

The maxillary sinus: physiology, development and imaging anatomy.

OBJECTIVES: The maxillary sinus is of paramount importance for otolaryngologists, rhinologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, head and neck and dental and maxillofacial radiologists. A comprehensive review article concerning the physiology, development and imaging anatomy was undertaken. METHODS: Relevant literature pertaining to the physiology of the sinonasal cavity, development of the paranasal sinuses and imaging anatomy of the maxilla and maxillary sinus from 2000 to 2019 was reviewed. Emphasis was placed on literature from the last 5 years. RESULTS: Extensive recent research using i…

Complications and Management of Implants Migrated into the Maxillary Sinus.

The article describes complications following dental implant dislocation into the maxillary sinus and their management and attempts to elucidate the reasons for these complications and their prevention. This retrospective study presents 55 cases of dental implant migration into the maxillary sinus. Patients were 30 men and 25 women with average age of 58 years. Oroantral communication was found in 46 cases, primarily in cases without prior bone augmentation, in patients aged older than 60 years (mean), and medically compromised patients (ASA > 1). The dislocated implant and the infected tissue…

Frontal and caudal maxillary sinus lipoma in a horse.

An adult horse was diagnosed with a frontal and caudal maxillary sinus lipoma, which was surgically removed. This is the first known report of a sinus lipoma in a horse. Lipomas should be considered in the differential diagnoses of equine sinus masses; complete surgical excision appears to be curative.
