Various definitions have been proposed for the term 'chronic sinusitis' but too often reports on chronic sinusitis lack a definition. In order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, and also to facilitate comparisons between clinical investigations, definitions of 'chronic maxillary sinusitis' of either rhinogenous or dental origin are proposed. It is suggested that the differential diagnosis should be based upon the duration of symptoms, ENT and dental examinations, sinus radiographs and/or sinoscopy, and results of conservative treatment. In a study conducted over a 5-year p…

44 inferior meatal antrostomies in 32 patients have been followed over a period of 2 years. Control of the results by means of sinuscopy, ultrasonography, x-ray's, biopsies and subjective as well as objective findings revealed good results in 89% of the patients. Closure of the fenestration occurred in 29,5% but had no bearing on the recurrency rate of sinusitis. Improvement was noticeable even after closure. Allergy did not play an important role. Mucociliary transport was evident through the window, permitting adequate ventilation and drainage.

A case of a large compound odontoma in the right maxillary sinus causing acute maxillary sinusitis is reported. Seven large antral odontomas have been previously reported, none with the typical findings of acute sinusitis. Radiographs should always be considered in cases of recurrent maxillary sinusitis or pain, and the general practitioner should familiarize himself with lesions of the maxillary sinus that might be revealed in radiographic examination. Surgical excision is the preferred treatment for all odontomas, with no expectancy of recurrence. The odontoma described here was associated w…

OBJECTIVES: While maxillary sinus fungal balls (MSFB) can be associated with odontogenic conditions (MSFBO), MSFBO clinical and dental features have not been compared to odontogenic sinusitis (ODS). This multicenter study aimed to compare characteristics of MSFB, MSFBO, and ODS.
METHODS: A multicenter international retrospective cohort study was conducted on adults with MSFBs and ODS who underwent sinus surgery. First in MSFBs, it was determined whether different dental conditions were more likely in FB versus non-FB sides. Second, clinical features and dental pathologies were compared betwee

Considered the second most common type of odontogenic cysts, dentigerous cysts (DCs) are developmental lesions most often detected incidentally on radiographic imaging. The pathogenesis of DCs is not fully understood, but they are widely regarded as developmental cysts originating from the dental follicle. Although typically asymptomatic, DCs may cause clinical symptoms when they reach large sizes or get infected. This case highlights how a DC (common developmental odontogenic lesion often incidentally detected on imaging) may present with complete maxillary sinus opacification despite minimal

Periodontitis is a potential but often underdiagnosed cause of maxillary sinusitis, complicating accurate diagnosis due to overlapping clinical features. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the correlation between alveolar bone loss and maxillary sinus mucosal thickening in 50 patients with periodontitis. Measurements were performed in coronal and sagittal sections to assess the extent of periodontal destruction and sinus involvement. A significant association was observed, with greater mucosal thickening in patients exhibiting moderate to severe alveolar bone loss compared to mild cases.…

Background: Chronic maxillary sinusitis is most often linked to dental, allergic, or anatomical etiologies, with foreign body-induced forms remaining rare. This case report describes a unique occurrence of chronic maxillary sinusitis resulting from misplaced hyaluronic filler due to a facial esthetic procedure. Case presentation: A 60-year-old woman experienced right-sided maxillary sinusitis symptoms for three years after hyaluronic filler injections. Multi-slice computed tomography showed total sinus opacification, a vermicular foreign body, and a small anterior wall perforation. The patient…

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is often necessary when managing odontogenic sinusitis (ODS), but ESS extent for ODS with extramaxillary sinus involvement has been incompletely studied. This study compared outcomes after wide maxillary antrostomy (MA) alone versus complete ESS for ODS with frontal sinus involvement.
METHODS: A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted on patients with uncomplicated ODS (no extrasinus spread) who underwent ESS when computed tomography demonstrated maxillary, anterior ethmoid (AE), and frontal sinus opacification. Multiple preoperative and p

Chronic maxillary sinusitis accompanied by severe thickening of the sinus mucosa, blockage of the ostium, and patient-reported symptoms requires preoperative assessment and treatment by an otolaryngologist before maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). Prescription of antibiotics and nasal saline irrigation are the first choice of treatment; however, endoscopic sinus surgery is considered when the treatment's effect is limited and drug resistance is observed. Nevertheless, MSFA performed in the presence of sinus pathologies have been reported to have favorable results when the lesions are m…

Around 10-20% of sinusitis have a dental etiology. Odontogenic sinusitis is generally caused by periodontitis, peri-implantitis, periapical pathology, or oroantral communication. Ectopic teeth are a rare cause of chronic odontogenic sinusitis. We present a rare case of chronic sinusitis caused by five ectopic teeth. A 39-year-old-female patient presented to our clinic with complaints of facial pain over the left cheek, ipsilateral nasal obstruction, ipsilateral rhinorrhea, and coughing over the last five years. Physical examination revealed a febrile patient. There was an ipsilateral purulent

OBJECTIVE: The successful management of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) involves a combination of medical treatment with dental surgery and/or endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). However, there is no consensus for the optimal timing of ESS. Although several studies have emphasized dental surgery as the primary treatment modality for OMS, there is recent evidence to suggest that ESS alone may be an effective treatment approach. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively investigate the pathophysiology of the current intractable OMS and the role ESS, especially ESS preceding dental treatm…

Unilateral recurrent maxillary sinusitis is a common sinunasal pathology, mostly related to the ostiomeatal complex dysfunction. Although sinusitis can potentially spread to the adjacent structures, orbital cellulitis remains an exceptionally rare sequela. The authors report the unusual case of a patient who presented with recurrent maxillary sinusitis complicated by cyclic episodes of periorbital cellulitis related to ostiomeatal complex obstruction from herniated periorbital fat through an unnoticed medial orbital wall fracture. To the best of our knowledge, no other similar case has previous…

Chronic rhinosinusitis is a common otorhinolaryngological disease, although the incidence of chronic sinusitis is the result of many factors, the local anatomic abnormalities is one of the most important reasons. When maxillary sinus dysplasia that sinus cavity becomes small. These was some sinus cavity partial or complete bony septum malformation used to be reported occasionally, according to reports in the literature of this malformation rate is below 2%, bony divides sinus cavity is divided into 2 to 3 independent lacunar deformity are very rare, next we will introduce a case of sinus cavit

The main objectives of this study were to estimate the frequency of chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin, and to evaluate the microbiology of odontogenic and non-odontogenic chronic maxillary sinusitis. Aspirates from 59 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis (47 non-odontogenic, 12 odontogenic), collected during a 3-year period, were microbiologically processed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Moreover, antimicrobial susceptibility was evaluated in the isolated bacteria. In this study, 20 % of chronic maxillary sinusitis cases were associated with a dental origin, and sinus lift…
