Tonsillolith: a report of three clinical cases.

Tonsillolith is a rare dystrophic calcification as a result of chronic inflammation of the tonsils. Three asymptomatic cases of tonsillolith are reported, incidentally discovered through panoramic radiographs, which showed different sizes of radiopaque images, varying from 2 to 5 mm; cases I and III images did not overlap the mandible ramus, which led to a probable diagnosis of soft tissue calcification. Case II had radiopaque unilateral images, with osseous tissue density, overlapping the mandibular ramus, leading to a benign intra-osseous lesion, which was considered as differential diagnosi

Lacrimal drainage anomalies in Tessier cleft 3 with unilateral anophthalmos.

Bilateral Tessier cleft types 3 and 4 are rare and commonly involve the lacrimal drainage system owing to their anatomical location. Such clefts commonly present with associated ocular anomalies and include colobomatous eyelids, hypertelorism, microphthalmia, punctal or canalicular agenesis, and nasolacrimal duct obstruction or exstrophy. The current report presents an 18-month-old baby with bilateral Tessier cleft 3 with a unilateral anophthalmos, symmetrical eyelid colobomas, and lacrimal drainage anomalies. The lacrimal anomalies noted include small lacrimal sac with inferior canaliculus on

Condylar geometry variation is associated with ENPP1 variant in a population of patients with dento-facial deformities.

PURPOSE: Bone remodeling is essential in maintaining bone health. Considering that ENPP1 contributes to bone geometry and bone mineralization, the aim of our study was to analyze the association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ENPP1 and condylar remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 156 patients undergoing orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery treatment for correction of malocclusion were included in this prospective study. Saliva samples from all subjects were used for DNA extraction and genotyping. Four ENPP1 SNPs were selected and tested to determine whether speci

Ciliopathy Protein Tmem107 Plays Multiple Roles in Craniofacial Development.

A broad spectrum of human diseases called ciliopathies is caused by defective primary cilia morphology or signal transduction. The primary cilium is a solitary organelle that responds to mechanical and chemical stimuli from extracellular and intracellular environments. Transmembrane protein 107 (TMEM107) is localized in the primary cilium and is enriched at the transition zone where it acts to regulate protein content of the cilium. Mutations in TMEM107 were previously connected with oral-facial-digital syndrome, Meckel-Gruber syndrome, and Joubert syndrome exhibiting a range of ciliopathic de

Root and Eruption Defects in c-Fos Mice Are Driven by Loss of Osteoclasts.

c-Fos homozygous mice lack osteoclasts with a failure of the teeth to erupt and with an arrest of root development. Here, we characterize the defects associated with the failure in root development and the loss of the tooth-bone interface, and we investigate the underlying causes. We show that, while homozygous c-Fos mice have no multinucleated osteoclasts, heterozygous mice have a reduction in the number of osteoclasts with a reduction in the tooth-bone interface during development and subtle skeletal defects postnatally. In the homozygous mutants bone is found to penetrate the tooth, particu

Endoscopic treatment of sinonasal disease in patients who have had orthognathic surgery.

Certain skeletofacial patterns may be predisposed to aggravated sinonasal disease postoperatively. These may include, but are not limited to, facial skeletal asymmetries with high septal deviations and those with obstructive nasal respiration and mouth breathing that leads to skeletal growth disturbances such as vertical maxillary hyperplasia and apertognathism. These sinonasal diseases may partly be the result of osteomeatal blockage by pre-existing structures, or synechial shelves and webs blocking normal maxillary antral mucosal flow. The use of nasal antral windows placed anteriorly in the

Review: the Michigan cleft twin study.

The combined effects of clefting of the lip and/or palate and of their surgical repair have been examined for a cross-sectional sample of 20 MZ and 25 DZ like-sexed twins discordant for clefting, in the age range of 4 to 17 years. The findings of four studies published since 1975 on that sample are explored for the primary, contiguous and pleiotropic effects of clefting. The primary effects on facial structures of repaired cleft lip appear to be minimal. However, for twins with repaired cleft of the palate (with or without cleft of the lip), the maxilla was both deficient antero-posteriorly an

Thresholds of Abnormality Perception in Facial Esthetics among Laypersons and Dental Professionals: Frontal Esthetics.

AIM: To find thresholds at which laypersons and dental professionals perceive abnormalities in two facial frontal esthetics variables: facial symmetry and vertical harmony. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A baseline frontal image of a young male face with optimum facial proportions was generated from a real image using a photo editing software. Different facial asymmetry images were then generated from this image by manipulating the chin point position at 2 mm increment to the left side. Vertical harmony was perceived through manipulating lower anterior facial height (LAFH) at a ratio of 2% of increas

Exploiting the interplay between cross-sectional and longitudinal data in Class III malocclusion patients.

The aim of the study was to investigate how to improve the forecasting of craniofacial unbalance risk during growth among patients affected by Class III malocclusion. To this purpose we used computational methodologies such as Transductive Learning (TL), Boosting (B), and Feature Engineering (FE) instead of the traditional statistical analysis based on Classification trees and logistic models. Such techniques have been applied to cephalometric data from 728 cross-sectional untreated Class III subjects (6-14 years of age) and from 91 untreated Class III subjects followed longitudinally during t

Comparison of skeletal and soft-tissue changes following unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between soft-tissue and underlying skeletal structures before and after unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis. METHODS: The sample consisted of 11 patients (three girls and eight boys) with an average age of 4.6 years at the time of treatment. All patients had unilateral craniofacial microsomia (four right-sided and seven left-sided unilateral craniofacial microsomia) and all underwent unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis. Measurements were performed on frontal medical photographs and posteroanterior

Benign fibro-osseous diseases of the maxillofacial bones. A review and differential diagnosis.

Benign fibro-osseous lesions (BFOLs) of the maxillofacial bones represent a diverse group of pathologic conditions that includes developmental lesions, reactive or dysplastic diseases, and neoplasms. Owing to substantial overlap of the histopathologic findings, subclassification of BFOLs may be problematic. Moreover, this is not merely an academic exercise because the therapeutic management of BFOLs varies depending on the actual disease process. To further complicate matters, a number of other disease processes demonstrate clinical, radiographic, and microscopic features that bear resemblance

Molecular dissection of craniofacial development using zebrafish.

The zebrafish, Danio rerio, is a small, freshwater teleost that only began to be used as a vertebrate genetic model by the late George Streisinger in the early 1980s. The strengths of the zebrafish complement genetic studies in mice and embryological studies in avians. Its advantages include high fecundity, externally fertilized eggs and transparent embryos that can be easily manipulated, inexpensive maintenance, and the fact that large-scale mutagenesis screens can be performed. Here we review studies that have used the zebrafish as a model for craniofacial development. Lineage studies in zeb

Abnormalities of tooth development in pituitary dwarfism.

Roentgenographic studies of the jaws and teeth in a group of forty-eight pituitary dwarfs showed the following abnormalities in the development of the teeth: 1. Delayed shedding of the deciduous teeth. 2. Absence of resorption of the roots of the deciduous teeth at the usual time. 3. Marked delay in eruption of the permanent teeth. 4. Retention of permanent teeth in the maxillary and mandibular shafts. 5. Development of the apical parts of roots of the retained permanent teeth and their growth toward the lower mandibular edge. 6. Displacement of the first molars from the mandibular shaft to ra

Methanol exposure during gastrulation causes holoprosencephaly, facial dysgenesis, and cervical vertebral malformations in C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Exposure of pregnant outbred CD-1 mice to methanol during the period of gastrulation results in exencephaly, cleft palate, and cervical vertebra malformations [Rogers and Mole, Teratology 55: 364, 1997], while inbred C57BL/6J mice are sensitive to the teratogenicity of ethanol. C57BL/6J fetuses exhibit the holoprosencephaly spectrum of malformations after maternal exposure to ethanol during gastrulation, but the sensitivity of C57BL/6J mice to methanol-induced teratogenesis has not been previously described. METHODS: Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were administered two i.p. injections tot

Bilateral oblique facial clefts and extremity anomaly in an infant after intrauterine efavirenz exposure and review of its teratogenic risk.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital anomalies may be caused by genetic or environmental factors or a combination of both. Oblique facial clefts are very rare congenital deformities. The occurrence of facial clefts and an extremity anomaly suggests a common underlying cause. Lateral oro-ocular clefts do not occur along normal developmental planes and may be part of the amnion disruption complex sequence. Our objective was to report a case of this very event, which also followed an unusual intrauterine exposure and review the literature on the teratogenic risk of efavirenz. STUDY DESIGN: We report a case of

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in Oral Surgery and Implantology: A Review.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common inner ear disorder characterized by intense dizziness often triggered by sudden head movements. Certain dental and maxillofacial surgeries may induce BPPV due to vibrational trauma from instrumentation, extended hyperflexion of the head, and existing vestibular conditions. This study aimed to analyze certain oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures associated with BPPV and evaluate prevention and treatment strategies. A review of relevant literature was conducted through Google Scholar and an extensive search on PubMed for the period 20
