Efficacy of Ivermectin in combating Strongyloides westeri infection of foal. The efficacy of Ivermectin and Mebendazol in combating spontaneous Strongyloides westeri infections in foals has been tested by examining faecal egg output reduction. Ivermectin as a paste formulation was given to sucking foals and pregnant mares in a single dosage of 200 micrograms/kg bodyweight by oral administration. A high efficacy of Ivermectin in combating patent Strongyloides westeri infection could be demonstrated; no side effects have been observed. Mebendazol at a dosage rate of 8 mg/kg did not yield satisfa

Mebendazole and albendazole are the drugs of choice for the treatment of alveolar echinococcosis. In this open-labelled observational study we present and evaluate the outcome of long-term treatment with these drugs and present results of different treatment regimens. Thirty-five patients were started on either mebendazole or albendazole at the beginning of 1992 and followed for an average of 39 months (range 12-79 months). Treatment was classed as successful if the disease had not progressed for >1 year and if there were no side-effects necessitating a change of treatment. Lack of progression…

The drug-metabolizing enzymes of some helminths can deactivate anthelmintics and therefore partially protect helminths against these drugs' toxic effect. The aim of our study was to assess the activity of the main drug-metabolizing enzymes and evaluate the metabolism of selected anthelmintics (albendazole, flubendazole, mebendazole) in the rat tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta, a species often used as a model tapeworm. In vitro and ex vivo experiments were performed. Metabolites of the anthelmintics were detected and identified by HPLC with spectrofluorometric or mass-spectrometric detection. The …

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Parasitic helminth infections can suppress symptoms of allergy, type 1 diabetes, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease in animal models. We analyzed data from a large, population-based cohort study to determine whether common childhood enterobiasis protects against these diseases.
METHODS: We collected information on individual prescriptions filled for the drug mebendazole against Enterobius vermicularis for all children born in Denmark 1995-2008 from the National Register of Medicinal Product Statistics (n = 924,749; age 0-14 years); 132,383 of these children (14%) fil…

The effect of pyrantel pamoate, levamisole, mebendazole, thiabendazole and bephenium hydroxynaphthoate on various intestinal helminths were evaluated among the inhabitants of four villages in the Dezful area southwest of Iran. A total number of 328 persons, all infected simultaneously with Ascaris and hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale) and 49.2% with Trichostrongylus spp., were randomly divided into six groups. One group was kept as the control and the other five were each treated with one compound. Follow-up examinations showed that all of the drugs used were highly effective on Ascaris, and th…

The soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm and Trichuris trichiura are common in areas with warm and moist climates with little access to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene affecting the poorest populations. The current control strategy of the World Health Organization is preventive chemotherapy (PC), i.e., the administration of the two benzimidazoles (albendazole and mebendazole) using single, oral doses to at risk populations without prior diagnosis. The recent success of PC is threatened by anthelmintic drug resistance and the low efficacy of the drugs agains…

The clinical diagnosis of trichinellosis is difficult because there are no pathogenic signs or symptoms and in diagnosing the infection epid … ic circulating antibodies will confirm the diagnosis. The medical treatment includes anthelmintics (mebendazole or albendazole) and glucocorticosteroids. Mebendazole is usually administered at a daily dose of 5 mg/kg but higher doses (up to 20 - 25 mg/kg/day) are recommended in some countries. Albendazole is used at 800 mg/day (15 mg/kg/day) administered in t …

Osseous hydatidosis is a very uncommon disease which often recurs after treatment. There is no well-established effective method of management. Radical excision may produce serious mutilation and often fails to control the disease. We have used oral mebendazole as adjuvant treatment in four patients. Two also underwent radical excision, one had received limited excision elsewhere and the other did not have operative treatment. The patients who underwent radical excision and the other who did not have an operation became and remain free of symptoms and are serologically negative. A combination …

Diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic aspects are interpreted on the basis of two cases of Echinococcus alveolaris. Both patients had undergone partial hepatectomy and were subsequently treated chemotherapeutically. In one case dehydroemetine and mebendazole (Vermox, Janssen), and in the other case metrifonate (Bilarcil, Bayer A.G.) were used. The diagnosis of alveococcosis of the liver was demonstrated in one case histologically on the occasion of appendectomy, and in the other case by the indirect immunofluorescence test and passive haemagglutination. In case of suspected alveococcosis thes…

Methyl 5(6)-(alpha-hydroxyphenyl methyl) benzimidazole-2-carbamate, a major metabolite of mebendazole was evaluated against Cysticercus fasciolaria (larval form of Taenia taeniaeformis) in rats. The metabolite was assessed in various doses. A regimen of 50 mg/kg x 10 (ip), given one day apart, was found to be most effective and killed all the mature cysticerci. On developing cysts, the treatment was initiated in two schedules; 5 days prior to (d-5 to d-1) and 5 days after (d + 6 to d + 10) administration of T. taeniaeformis eggs to rats. The later protocol with 100 mg/kg x 5 dose (ip) resulted…

Five elementary ("prototypic") schools located in five districts in central Java were selected and the children examined for helminth infections (Ascaris, Trichuris, hookworm). They were de-wormed with a course of mebendazole and provided with 6-7 months of "behavioral remediation instruction" (BRI). In other ("control") schools, children were treated with mebendazole but were not provided BRI. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of BRI in minimizing infection/re-infection following deworming. After the 6-7 month course of BRI in the prototypic schools, all the children (in both t…

Echinococcal or hydatid cyst is not commonly seen in the United States; however, two cases were seen within a 6-month period at a southern teaching hospital, and it is endemic in many areas of the world. The causative organism, Echinococcus granulosus, is a tapeworm of dogs; the normal intermediate hosts are hoofed animals. When man becomes infected enlarging cysts in the liver, lung, nervous system, or peritoneum may cause considerable morbidity. While surgery traditionally has been the treatment of choice, in the past few years the usage of high doses of mebendazole has been suggested as a p…

BACKGROUND: The accidental ingestion of the third larval stage of Anisakis can cause acute clinical symptoms, which are relieved via extraction of the larvae. Although this is a highly effective technique, it can only be practiced when the larvae are found in accessible areas of the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore instead the condition has often been treated using various different drugs.
AIMS: This study evaluates the effectiveness of gastric acid secretion inhibitors (omeprazole and ranitidine), gastric mucosal protectants (sucralfate) and anthelmintics (mebendazole and flubendazole) …

BACKGROUND: Surgery has long been considered the first-choice treatment in patients with echinococcosis of the liver. The poorly predictable outcome of older studies using mebendazole or albendazole confirmed this belief. Since the introduction of a percutaneous technique (PAIR; puncture, aspiration, injection, reaspiration) treatment policy is changing. The actual question is which treatment is preferred in which patients.
METHODS: Review of recent literature.
RESULTS: Laparoscopic treatment of anteriorly located hepatic cysts is a new surgical technique with high success rates (77%-100%) a…

BACKGROUND: Infections with soil-transmitted helminths (Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Trichuris trichiura) are widespread and often occur concomitantly. These parasitic-worm infections are typically treated with albendazole or mebendazole, but both drugs show low efficacy against T. trichiura. Albendazole is the drug of choice against hookworm.

Anthelmintic treatment of sick preschool-age children at health facilities is a potentially effective strategy for intestinal helminth control in this age-group. We conducted a study from July 1998 to February 1999 in western Kenya to determine whether the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines' clinical assessment can be used to identify helminth-infected children, and to evaluate the nutritional benefit of treating sick children without pallor with an anthelmintic (mebendazole is already part of IMCI treatment for sick children aged 2-4 years with palmar pallor in areas…

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorder. The vascular endothelium serves as the final barrier preventing circulating immune cells from entering inflamed skin, yet its role in psoriasis pathogenesis and therapeutic potential has long been overlooked. Here, we identify a pathogenic subpopulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2, encoded by PTGS2) high endothelial cells (COX2+ ECs), characterized by elevated P-selectin expression, excessive oxidative stress, and MMP9-mediated glycocalyx degradation. The ROS-COX2-MMP9 axis can be effectively suppressed by mebendazole, an FDA-ap…
