Meckel's diverticulum results from a partial persistence of the omphalomesenteric duct and is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, affecting about 2% of the general population. Its presentation as a giant Meckel's diverticulum (>5 cm) is rare and is associated with major complications. We report a case of a 53 year-old woman with constipation for at least ten years. A colonoscopy from eight years ago suggested megacolon. The patient consults in the last month for abdominal pain associated with anorexia. The computed tomography scan image suggested an ileal megadive

Meckel's diverticulum can present with unusual symptoms and signs and therefore delay diagnosis. We present the case of a 63 year old lady who presented to the gynaecologists with a huge right sided ovarian cyst. She had required 13 units blood transfusion previously (5 years ago) for massive gastrointestinal bleed with no cause found despite extensive investigations. At operation she was found to have a Meckel's diverticulum in the left lumbar region containing a large calculus. She had an unremarkable post-operative course.

Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of gastrointestinal track (2-4%), however complications occur rarely (4-16%). We describe a case of 63- years old female presenting simultaneously two serious complications of Meckel diverticulum. Operated patient was diagnosed with perforated tumor of Meckel diverticulum. Segmental resection of small bowel including tumor was performed. Pathology examination revealed gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in Meckel diverticulum. No significant malignancy risk factors were found (low mitotic count). Consequently, computed tomography …

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum with enteroliths is a rare complication. Here, we report a case of perforation of Meckel's diverticulum with enteroliths, which could be accurately diagnosed by the preoperative computed tomography (CT). A 46-year-old man with acute onset of severe abdominal pain, and a localized muscle guarding in the right hypochondrium, had a solitary stone detected in the right abdomen by the radiography. The abdominal CT revealed a saclike outpouching of the small intestine, containing air/fluid levels and an enterolith, with surrounding free air and mesenteric inflamm

We report colonoscopic features of an intussuscepted Meckel's diverticulum, presenting with hematochezia. A 35-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with acute onset, transient, sharp, severe epigastric pain that began 6 h earlier. Colonoscopy revealed a reddish, soft, fist-sized polypoid lesion in the terminal ileum. The lesion was misinterpreted as a hematoma by an inexperienced endoscopist. The patient began to complain of intermittent, severe periumbilical pain following the colonoscopic examination. Subsequent computed tomography showed an enteric intussusception. An exploratory

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most frequent anomaly of the small intestine, usually asymptotic. Complications of MD in children are usually bleeding and inflammation. Signs are non specific and diagnostics is prolonged. Scintigraphy is the method for the verification of bleeding from MD. A positive finding is the indication for exploration using laparoscopic or classic approach. In patients with bleeding of the MD, the literature presents, that there is usually gastric mucosa. The authors present patients with bleeding and the microscopic picture of the MD was intestinal mucosa with bleedi

Meckel's diverticulum is an evolution of omphalomesentric channel one of the most frequent embryologic abnormality of digestive tract. It is observed in two circumstances: during a routine exploration or after a complication: intestinal obstruction, peritonitis, recurrent abdominal pain. Only open or laparoscopic explorations allow a diagnosis. Resection of the diverticulum is recommended in children because the complications are frequent and serious. The preferred therapeutic method is the bowel resection with immediate anastomosis.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital malformation of gastrointestinal tract. It can cause complications in the form of ulceration, haemorrhage, intussusception, intestinal obstruction, perforation and, very rarely, vesicodiverticular fistulae and tumours. These complications, especially bleeding, are more common in the paediatric age group than in adults; however it is not uncommon to miss the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum in adults. Here, we reviewed the literature regarding the complications of this forgotten clinical entity in adults with potential diagnostic difficultie

An 11-month-old girl child presented with distension of abdomen, constipation, vomiting and fever. X-ray of the abdomen suggested intestinal obstruction. Exploration revealed the distal ileum to be kinked around a band running from the tip of a congested Meckel's diverticulum to the lateral pelvic wall. A small perforation was noticed at the tip of the diverticulum and a live roundworm was found lying free in the peritoneal cavity. The diverticulum along with a segment of adjoining bowel was resected and end-to-end anastomosis done. The diverticulum had a wide lumen and showed no heterotopic t

The authors made an analysis of using endovideosurgery in diagnosing and treatment of Meckel's diverticulum and its complications in 18 patients. They describe signs and diagnostic criteria of the disease. Adequate treatment was proved to be possible by laparoscopy.

We present our observations on two young patients with repeated digestive bleeding from hemorrhagic Meckel's diverticulum. In one patient examined by Tc99 scintigraphy, the hemorrhagic area was shown in the lower abdomen. The laparoscopic exploration showed the Meckel's diverticulum at 1 m distance from ileocecal angle. Both cases were treated by resection with a vascular stapler postoperative evolution was favorable.
