Salicylic acid inhibits indeterminate-type nodulation but not determinate-type nodulation.

LCOs (lipochitin oligosaccharides, Nod factors) produced by the rhizobial symbiote of Vicia sativa subsp. nigra (vetch, an indeterminate-type nodulating plant) are mitogenic when carrying an 18:4 acyl chain but not when carrying an 18:1 acyl chain. This suggests that the 18:4 acyl chain specifically contributes to signaling in indeterminate-type nodulation. In a working hypothesis, we speculated that the 18:4 acyl chain is involved in oxylipin signaling comparable to, for example, signaling by derivatives of the 18:3 fatty acid linolenic acid (the octadecanoid pathway). Because salicylic acid

The isolation of allergens from the green pea.

The aqueous extract of green peas was separated into 3 fractions (albumin, legumin, and vicilin) by dialysis against distilled water and isoelectric precipitation. The major antigenic and all of the allergenic activity of the pea extract was associated with the albumin fraction. The albumin fraction retains its allergenicity upon heating at 60 degrees C for 30 min or boiling at 100 degrees C for 5 min, but becomes partially inactivated by autoclaving at 120 degrees C for 15 min. The allergenic determinant expressed by the albumin fraction appears to be common to several other members of the le

Agrivoltaic arrays and effects of forage biomass and nutritive value of grasses and legumes for grazing dairy cattle.

Forage crops for grazing dairy cattle grown underneath ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) systems may provide a feed source for livestock production. The objective was to evaluate forage biomass and nutritive value of grasses and legumes grown under different PV conditions. Forages were planted underneath a 30-kW PV site (30kW), a 50-kW PV site (50kW), and one control pasture site without PV (CON) in 2022 and 2023 with 4 replicates per site. Solar sites were all located on the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center grazing dairy farm (Morris, MN) and were not located n

Mixed Cropping Improves Soil Fertility via Enhancing Plant Facilitation in Alpine Artificial Grassland.

By enhancing plant complementarity and facilitation, mixed cropping may accelerate soil fertility recovery and improve grassland ecosystem resilience. Nevertheless, the impacts of mixed cropping on soil fertility over a single growing season, and the underlying plant-soil interaction mechanisms, remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that mixed grass-legume-moss sowing would increase above- and belowground biomass, aggregate stability (mean weight diameter), and soil organic carbon and total nitrogen relative to monocultures, partly through relief of the nitrogen limitation of the grass by

Design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of oxime ether derivatives containing 1,5-dimethyl-6-thioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4-dione as protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Herbicides based on protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO; EC 1.3.3.4) are widely used for weeding control in agricultural fields to safeguard food security. PPO herbicides, because of their low dosage, rapid action on weeds, slow accumulation in the environment and low toxicity to mammals, have become an important field of research in the development of new herbicides. This study presents a novel molecular scaffold with remarkably potent herbicidal activity. RESULTS: A series of novel oxime ether derivatives containing 1,5-dimethyl-6-thioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4-dione 6a-6z were desi

Assessing Birds of Prey as Biological Pest Control: A Comparative Study with Hunting Perches and Rodenticides on Rodent Activity and Crop Health.

Rodent damage significantly affects agriculture around the world. Rodenticides can sometimes control pests, but they are costly, may cause secondary poisoning to nontarget wildlife, and can become less efficient over time due to bait shyness and resistance. Using wildlife as biological pest control agents, particularly barn owls (Tyto spp.), has been suggested as an alternative. Barn owl nest boxes and hunting perches have been added to increase predator pressure, yet few studies have examined their effectiveness. We conducted a field study in forty-five 10 × 10 m2 plots to compare three treat

Harnessing desert resources: a comparative study of microgreens growth, nutrient dynamics, and performance in desert sand and rockwool.

Food security in arid regions, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is a significant challenge due to harsh environmental conditions such as low rainfall, high temperatures, and low-quality soil. These factors limit agricultural productivity and compromise stability. In such regions, where desert dunes are abundant, using sand as a plant growth medium presents unique opportunities to reduce reliance on expensive, synthesized substrates like rockwool, which have a larger carbon footprint. Using desert sand as an alternative to growing low-input, yet nutrient-rich crops, such as microgreens,

An insight into the mechanism of DNA damage response in plants- role of SUPPRESSOR OF GAMMA RESPONSE 1: An overview.

Because of their sessile lifestyle, plants are inescapably exposed to various kinds of environmental stresses throughout their lifetime. Therefore, to regulate their growth and development, plants constantly monitor the environmental signals and respond appropriately. However, these environmental stress factors, along with some endogenous metabolites, generated in response to environmental stress factors often induce various forms of DNA damage in plants and thus promote genome instability. To maintain the genomic integrity, plants have developed an extensive, sophisticated and coordinated cel

Rhizobium daejeonense sp. nov. isolated from a cyanide treatment bioreactor.

A polyphasic study was carried out to determine the taxonomic position of two aerobic, cyanide-degrading bacterial strains, designated L61T and L22, which had been isolated from a bioreactor for the treatment of nickel-complexed cyanide. The two isolates exhibited almost identical taxonomic characteristics. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from comparative 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolates fall in a sublineage of the genus Rhizobium comprising the type strains of Rhizobium giardinii, Rhizobium radiobacter, Rhizobium rubi, Rhizobium larrymoorei, Rhizobium vitis, Rhizobium undico

Effects of forage source and forage particle size as a free-choice provision on growth performance, rumen fermentation, and behavior of dairy calves fed texturized starters.

We investigated the interactive effects of forage source and forage particle size (PS) as a free-choice provision on growth performance, rumen fermentation, and behavior of dairy calves fed texturized starters. Forty-eight Holstein calves (42 ± 3 kg of body weight) were randomly assigned (n = 12 calves per treatment) in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with the factors of forage source [alfalfa hay (AH) and wheat straw (WS)] and forage PS [(AH: medium = 1.96 mm or long = 3.93 mm) and (WS: medium = 2.03 mm or long = 4.10 mm), as geometric mean diameters]. Whole linted cottonseed as a forage substitute: fiber effectiveness and digestion kinetics.

Six ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows were used in a 6 x 6 Latin square design to 1) evaluate the potential interaction in effectiveness of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from whole cottonseed (WCS) when it was substituted for forage NDF (FNDF) and fed with ground (G) or steam-flaked (SF) corn and 2) to determine whether the kinetic properties of NDF digestion further clarify the effectiveness of WCS. The six dietary treatments were: forage control with G corn (21% FNDF), 5% WCS with G or SF corn (18% FNDF), 10% WCS with G or SF corn (15% FNDF), and 15% WCS with G corn (12% FNDF

Cereal-legume intercropping for climate-smart livestock production: insights from oat-alfalfa intercropping.

BACKGROUND: Cereal-legume intercropping can improve forage productivity and quality at the same time as enhancing soil function and reducing environmental impacts, yet integrative evaluations under low-input conditions are scarce. This study assessed oat (Avena sativa L.)-alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) intercropping for forage yield, nutritive value, soil properties and greenhouse gas emission intensity. A randomized complete block design compared sole oat (80 kg ha-1), sole alfalfa (15 kg ha-1) and oat-alfalfa seed ratios of 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 without irrigation or fertilisation. Previous intercr

Study on physiological indicators and spectral response characteristics of alfalfa under simulated spontaneous combustion of coal gangue dumps.

INTRODUCTION: Coal gangue dumps may still pose a risk of spontaneous combustion even after reclamation, threatening both ecological restoration and surrounding environments. As a dynamic and complex process, vegetation responses to spontaneous combustion heat stress vary across growth stages. Therefore, identifying growth-stage-dependent spectral responses of physiological indicators is critical for the timely and accurate detection of spontaneous combustion in coal gangue dumps. METHODS: In contrast to field-based investigations, this study selected alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), a typical re

Stoichiometric homeostasis of N:P ratio drives species-specific symbiotic N fixation inhibition under N addition.

INTRODUCTION: Symbiotic N fixation inhibition induced by N supply to legumes is potentially regulated by the relative N and P availability in soil. However, the specific responses of different legume species to changes in N:P availability remain unclear, and must be better understood to optimize symbiotic N fixation inputs under N enrichment. This study investigated mechanisms by which soil N and P supply influence the symbiotic N fixation of eight legume species, to quantify the inter-specific differences, and to demonstrate how these differences can be determined by the stoichiometric homeos

Prior Forage Type Influences Ruminal Responses to a Wheat Grain Challenge in Lactating Dairy Cows.

To increase the dry matter and metabolisable energy intake of cows, dairy farmers often supplement pasture with concentrates and conserved fodder. Feeding large amounts of highly fermentable concentrates to cows can result in metabolic issues, such as ruminal acidosis, and thus safer but more efficient introduction strategies are desirable. We assessed the role that forages play in ruminal, behavioural and production responses to a wheat grain challenge in dairy cows with no previous wheat adaptation. Multiparous lactating Holstein dairy cows (n = 16) were fed a forage-only diet of either luce

Isolation of Plant Root Nuclei for Single Cell RNA Sequencing.

The characterization of the transcriptional similarities and differences existing between plant cells and cell types is important to better understand the biology of each cell composing the plant, to reveal new molecular mechanisms controlling gene activity, and to ultimately implement meaningful strategies to enhance plant cell biology. To gain a deeper understanding of the regulation of plant gene activity, the individual transcriptome of each plant cell needs to be established. Until recently, single cell approaches were mostly limited to bulk transcriptomic studies on selected cell types.

Long-term field release of bioluminescent Sinorhizobium meliloti strains to assess the influence of a recA mutation on the strains' survival.

A field release experiment was carried out to study the fate of the isogenic, firefly luciferase (luc) gene-tagged Sinorhizobium meliloti strains L1 (RecA-) and L33 (RecA+) in the environment. Both strains were released at concentrations of approximately 10(6) cfu g(-1) soil in replicate and randomized field plots, which had been sown with alfalfa (Medicago sativa). The survival of both strains during the following 7 years could be subdivided into three phases: a sharp decline for more than two orders of magnitude within the first 4 months (phase I), followed by fluctuations around an average
