Nine adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were administered medroxyprogesterone acetate, 60 to 120 mg/day, and the effect of medroxyprogesterone on clinical symptoms and obstructive apneas during sleep was assessed. We analyzed hospitalizations among 26,507 young black women who attended a large metropolitan family planning clinic between 1968 and 1976. Age-adjusted hospitalization rates were compared for women using oral contraceptives, intrauterine contraceptive devices, and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate. In 26 women receiving either medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera) injections or combined oestrogen-progestogen pills for contraception, tests of coagulation and fibrinolysis were performed before treatment, and after 8, 16 and 24 weeks of therapy. We evaluated contraception continuation rates and discontinuation reasons in Zahedan among 1741 women from 1998-2000. The effects of female sex hormones on the dimensions of myometrial smooth muscle fibres were studied by using ovariectomized rabbits. After one month of treatment, the fiber dimensions of the outer myometrial layer were measured, using cryostat sections. Calculated smooth muscle fiber volume was found to be in the sequence: control < medroxyprogesterone < estradiol < estradiol + medroxyprogesterone < estradiol alone. Twenty-four hirsute female patients were treated with 100 mg of depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate intramuscularly every 15 days. Twenty-three showed definite improvement from their abnormal hair growth. All patients with initially elevated 17-ketosteroids in 24-hour urine collections showed a decrease of these metabolites with treatment.
