The spontaneous occurrnce of blepharospasm and dystonic movements in face muscles, particularly those of the perioral and mandibular regions, has been named Meige's disease. Other dystonic features as spasmodic torticollis, dysphagia, spasmodic dysphonia and segmental dystonia of the limbs may, eventually, be present in the same patient. There is very little knowledge about the pathology of this disease. Many hypotheses concerning the pathophysiology of this entity have been put forward, most of them correlating the clinical response to several drugs with known action on the neurotransmitter s

A 30-year-old man presented with a two-year history of involuntary movements in the face and mouth. Movements progressively worsened during the previous six months. Born from non-consanguineous parents, he had normal developmental milestones and his past medical history was unremarkable. The patient did not take any medication or had a history of illicit drug use. Family history was positive for unsteady gait of unknown cause. Neurological examination disclosed isolated orofacial dystonia affecting the face, particularly his mouth and eyes, resembling Meige's syndrome. Dystonic closure of eyel

Essential blepharospasm is an idiopathic disorder of progressive involuntary spasms of the orbicularis oculi and upper facial (corrugator, procerus) muscles. Blepharospasm literally means spasm of the eyelids; however, most patients with blepharospasm also have or will develop squeezing in the lower face and neck muscles (Meige's syndrome, orofacial dystonia, or oromandibular dystonia). Some patients develop dystonic, uncontrolled movements in areas outside the facial nerve distribution (segmental cranial dystonia or craniocervical dystonia). Chronic, forceful squeezing by the periocular muscl

Porous diaphragm syndromes are a group of seemingly disparate clinical symptom complexes involving a wide variety of unrelated medical specialties. However, they are linked by a common anatomical feature, a defect in the diaphragm. They usually present with thoracic symptomatology--pleural effusions, pneumothorax, hemothorax, empyema--mediated by this defect. Management of these syndromes utilizes principles of thoracic surgical practice including thoracotomy and thoracoscopy.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a rare, aggressive, vascular neoplasm arising in chronic congenital or acquired lymphedema. Although it is most frequently associated with post-mastectomy lymphedema (Stewart-Treves's syndrome), lymphangiosarcoma can exceptionally arise in congenital hereditary lymphedema (Milroy's syndrome and Meige's syndrome) and non-hereditary lymphedema (congenital, praecox or forme tarde lymphedemas). We report a case of lymphangiosarcoma of the pubic region, supported by immunohistochemical studies, in a 42-year-old woman affected by congenital, non-hereditary lymphedema of the left

The allergist may be called upon to evaluate patients with dyspnea that is labeled "refractory asthma." In some patients, the site of origin … hotherapy if indicated. Other disorders that may produce dyspnea from laryngeal dysfunction include Meige syndrome, abductor spastic dysphonia, and laryngospasm. Recognition of these disorders will expedite timely, accurate diagnosis and treatment.

The variable clinical features and the relatively good response of blepharospasm to botulinum-toxin type A are now well established. The etiology and pathophysiology of blepharospasm and related facial movement disorders are still poorly understood. Genetic and histopathologic studies over the last year have contributed to our understanding of this disease. The most significant progress has been made in the electromyographic studies of the the levator palpebrae and orbicularis oculi muscles. Subclassification based on the electromyographic abnormalities of these two muscles have begun to impro

Blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia is characterized by the presence of spasms of the orbicularis oculi (blepharospasm) and of the lower facial or oromandibular muscles. A patient with this syndrome is presented in which a left cerebellopontine angle meningioma appeared to act as a triggering mechanism for the development of this disorder. On the basis of this report, we recommend that physicians search for this tumor in patients with this disorder.

Meige's disease is a form of focal dystonia characterized by symmetric dystonic spasms of facial muscles, sometimes associated with dystonic movements of other midline muscle groups. The etiology and pathophysiology of the disease have not been established. There is evidence that Meige's disease may result from striatal dopaminergic preponderance coupled with cholinergic overactivity. Several authors have noted a high prevalence of depression in patients with Meige's disease, suggesting a common neurochemical abnormality. Depression, in turn, is associated with decreased pineal melatonin secre

BACKGROUND: The relatively site-specific mesenchymal lesions of the vulvovaginal region can exhibit superficially overlapping histological features and can be diagnostically challenging. Fibroepithelial stromal polyp is generally an easily recognizable entity, but certain cases cause differential diagnostic problems.
CASE: We present a case of a 16-year-old girl with a 10-cm polypoid lesion localized to the left labium. The patient has therapy resistant congenital lymphedema localized to the left arm and leg. The labial lesion was resected and recurred after 12 months and 6 years following th

Eleven patients with cranial dystonia were investigated for diurnal variations in disability by means of video recordings. Disability increased significantly from morning to evening. The increase was not related to changes in vigilance levels assessed by dynamic electroencephalogram. Cranial movement disorders display diurnal fluctuations that are probably related to endogenous circadian rhythms.

Botulinum toxin type A creates temporary localised flaccid paralysis after injection into skeletal muscle. Thirty four patients with blepharospasm, of whom 28 also had the oromandibular dystonia syndrome, were treated with injections of botulinum toxin type A into the orbicularis oculi, and 28 showed functional improvement after the treatment. A high incidence of local side effects occurred, especially partial ptosis, which was well tolerated. There were no systemic side effects. The average period of relief was 2.5 months, increasing to 2.8 months after a second injection. Functional improvem
