The enzymatic activity of soluble protein kinase C from mice brain was inhibited by mercuric chloride (II) (HgCl2) and organic mercurials, i.e. methyl mercury, phenyl mercury and p-chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB). The IC50 was 0.08 microM for HgCl2 and about 1 microM for organic mercurials. Sulfhydryl blocking reagents such as 5,5'-dithiobis-2-nitrobenzoic acid (DTNB) and N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) were less potent but nevertheless inhibited the enzymic activity of protein kinase C. SLC26A3, also known as downregulated in adenoma (DRA), is an anion (Cl-, HCO3- and oxalate) exchanger in the luminal membrane of intestinal epithelial cells. Methylmercury (MeHg) production was compared among nine cultured methanogenic archaea that contain hgcAB, a gene pair that codes for mercury (Hg) methylation. The methanogens tested produced MeHg at inherently different rates, even when normalized to growth rate and Hg availability. This work dealt with the determination of the suitability of sorption of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) on biochars prepared from neem, sugarcane and bamboo feedstocks.
