Methylmercury (MeHg), derived from industrial processes and microbial methylation, is still a worldwide environmental concern. A rapid and efficient strategy is necessary for MeHg degradation in waste and environmental waters. Here, we provide a new method with ligand-enhanced Fenton-like reaction to rapidly degrade MeHg under neutral pH. Three common chelating ligands were selected (nitriloacetic acid (NTA), citrate, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic disodium (EDTA)) to promote the Fenton-like reaction and degradation of MeHg. Results showed that MeHg can be rapidly degraded, with the following

Methylmercury (MeHg) production is controlled by the bioavailability of inorganic divalent mercury (Hg(II)i ) and Hg-methylation capacity of the microbial community (conferred by the hgcAB gene cluster). However, the relative importance of these factors and their interaction in the environment remain poorly understood. Here, metagenomic sequencing and a full-factorial MeHg formation experiment were conducted across a wetland sulfate gradient with different microbial communities and pore water chemistries. From this experiment, the relative importance of each factor on MeHg formation was isolat

There is growing evidence for the potential of biochars (BCs) in remediating mercury-contaminated paddy soils, but the high doses commonly used in laboratory studies discourage BC application in practice. To address these difficulties, we compared the effects of varying amounts of BCs from different sources on the formation of methylmercury (MeHg) in soil and its accumulation in rice through microcosm and pot experiments. The addition of a wide range of added doses (0.3, 0.6, 1, 2, 4 and 5 %, w/w) of BCs derived from different biomass feedstocks (i.e., corn stalk, wheat straw, bamboo, oak and

The plant microbiota can affect plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soil. Although most well-known mercury (Hg) methylators are observed in the soil, it remains unclear how rice rhizosphere assemblages alter MeHg production. Here, we used network analyses of microbial diversity to identify bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere (RS) and root bacterial networks during rice development at Hg gradients. Hg gradients greatly impacted the niche-sharing of taxa significantly relating to MeHg/THg, while plant development had little effect. In RS networks, Hg gradients

Brownlee Reservoir is a mercury (Hg)-impaired hydroelectric reservoir that exhibits dynamic hydrological and geochemical conditions and is located within the Hells Canyon Complex in Idaho, USA. Methylmercury (MeHg) contamination in fish is a concern in the reservoir. While MeHg production has historically been attributed to sulfate-reducing bacteria and methanogenic archaea, microorganisms carrying the hgcA gene are taxonomically and metabolically diverse and the major biogeochemical cycles driving mercury (Hg) methylation are not well understood. In this study, Hg speciation and redox-active

Methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin, easily moves from the soil into rice plants and subsequently accumulates within the grains. Although biochar can reduce MeHg accumulation in rice grains, the precise mechanism underlying biochar-mediated responses to mercury (Hg) stress, specifically regarding MeHg accumulation in rice, remains poorly understood. In the current study, we employed a 4% biochar amendment to remediate Hg-contaminated paddy soil, elucidate the impacts of biochar on MeHg accumulation through a comprehensive analysis involving Hg isotopic fractionation and transcriptomic an

The protective effect of selenium (Se) against Hg-induced neurotoxicity has been widely investigated; however, the mechanisms behind this interaction have not been fully elucidated yet. In the current work, the role of Se against MeHg+-induced cytotoxicity in the human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) is reported for the first time by tracking Hg uptake and accumulation at the single-cell level by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in single-cell mode (SC-ICP-MS). The influence of different Se species (SeMet, SeMeSeCys, citrate-SeNPs, and chitosan-SeNPs) on MeHg+ cytotoxicity was ev

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxicant that exists in the natural environment, which level can be greatly increased because of human activity. MeHg exposures have the risk of being detrimental to the development of the nervous system. Studies on MeHg toxicity have largely focused on the mechanisms of its neurotoxicity following developmental exposures. Additionally, reproductive toxicity of developmental MeHg exposures has been noted in rodent models. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a self-fertilizing animal which has a short lifespan around 20 days. Most C. elegans

Sulfur-fertilizer is commonly applied in croplands and in immobilizing Hg in contaminated soil. However, there is still great uncertainty and controversy concerning Hg transportability and transformation when supplying sulfur in paddies with complex conditions. Herein, we explored the effect of adding sulfate in paddy soil at different rice growth stages on soil Hg release and MeHg accumulation in rice and uncovered the correlation between sulfur induced MeHg production and the dynamically changed soil Eh, dissolved Fe, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In specific, sulfate addition at early

Mangrove ecosystems serve as an important carbon sink but also could be a hotspot that produces neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Although many studies have focused on mercury (Hg) contamination in this carbon-rich ecosystem, our understanding of the effects and mechanisms of the organic matter (OM) regulation of MeHg production in mangrove sediments is still limited. Here, we examined the effects of Hg contamination and OM enrichment on MeHg production in anoxic mangrove sediments and identified the major microbial guilds attending this process. The mangrove sediments possessed a high potentia

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in promoting or suppressing methylmercury (MeHg) production in wetlands. However, the effects of DOM spectral characteristics on MeHg levels remain poorly understood in boreal peatlands in Northeast China, where is undergoing remarkable climate warming. In the present work, soil samples were collected from 22 peatlands in the Greater Khingan Mountains (GKM) to test the hypothesis that DOM spectral properties control MeHg levels. DOM was characterized by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy; the three-dimensional fluorescence exc

Understanding the relationship between mercury in seafood and the distribution of oceanic methylmercury is key to understand human mercury exposure. Here, we determined mercury concentrations in muscle and blood of bigeye and yellowfin tunas from the Western and Central Pacific. Results showed similar latitudinal patterns in tuna blood and muscle, indicating that both tissues are good candidates for mercury monitoring. Complementary tuna species analyses indicated species- and tissue- specific mercury patterns, highlighting differences in physiologic processes of mercury uptake and accumulatio

Methylmercury (MeHg) persists today as a priority public health concern. Mechanisms influencing MeHg metabolism, kinetics, and toxicity outcomes are therefore essential knowledge for informing exposure risks. Evidence points to different toxic potencies of MeHg and inorganic mercury (Hg2+), highlighting the role for biotransformation (demethylation) in regulating MeHg toxicokinetics/dynamics. Whereas microbial MeHg demethylation in the gut is seen to influence elimination kinetics, the potential for systemic demethylation in tissues and target organs to influence MeHg toxicity remains uncertai

Total and dissolved concentrations of inorganic mercury (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in water (Adour Estuary) were determined during three sampling campaigns and related to biogeochemical variables (nutrients, organic matter). Factors (sampling time, sample type) were included in analysis of covariance with effect separation. The urban estuary suffered historically from anthropogenic sources, however, decreased emissions have reduced Hg concentrations. Total IHg (0.51-3.42 ng L-1) and MeHg (25-81 pg L-1) concentrations are additively described by suspended particulate matter and particulate

Marine fish accumulate methylmercury (MeHg) to elevated concentrations, often higher than in freshwater systems. As a neurotoxic compound, high MeHg tissue concentrations could affect fish behavior which in turn could affect their populations. We examined the sublethal effects of MeHg on larvae of the Sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus), an estuarine fish, using artificial or natural diets with varying MeHg concentrations (0-4.8 ppm). Larvae were fed control and MeHg-contaminated diets at low or normal (10% of their body mass) daily food rations from 7 to 29 days when they reached juveni

Eating fish is often recommended as part of a healthful diet. However, fish, particularly large predatory fish, can contain significant levels of the highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). Ocean fish in general also contain high levels of selenium (Se), which is reported to confer protection against toxicity of various metals including mercury (Hg). Se and Hg have a high mutual binding affinity, and each can reduce the toxicity of the other. This is an evolving area of extensive research and controversy with variable results in the animal and epidemiologic literature. MeHg is toxic to many organ s

Aquatic-to-terrestrial subsidies have the potential to provide riparian consumers with benefits in terms of physiologically important organic compounds like omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs). However, they also have a "dark side" in the form of exposure to toxicants such as mercury. Human land use intensity may also determine whether subsidies provide benefits or come at a cost for riparian predators. We sampled insects as well as Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) chicks in 2015-2016 within the southern Finger Lakes region to understand how food quality, in terms of n

It is known that, as the vast majority of the anthropogenically emitted mercury can be found in aquatic ecosystems, where several methylating bacteria are present, fish consumption represents the most critical intake source of the most toxic form of mercury, the methylmercury (MeHg). The aim of this work is to predict MeHg levels in the fish muscles which, being the edible portion, are part of the human diet. A physiologically based toxicokinetics model was developed to evaluate the kinetics of MeHg in red mullets. Fishes were described by means of a multi-compartment model including stomach,

Mercury (Hg) accumulation in rice is an emerging health concern worldwide. However, sources and interactions responsible for Hg species accumulation in different rice tissues are still uncertain. Four experimental plots were carefully designed at an artisanal Hg mining site and a control site to evaluate the effect of atmospheric and soil Hg contents on Hg accumulation in rice. We showed that inorganic Hg (IHg) contents in rice tissues grown either in contaminated or control site soil (non-contaminated soil) were higher at Hg artisanal mining site than those at the control site. Elevated total

Estuaries are sinks for mercury, in which the most toxic mercury form, neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg), is produced by mercury methylators and accumulates in estuarine sediments. In the same area, the microbial sulfur cycle is triggered by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which is considered as the main mercury methylator. In this review, we analyzed the sulfur and mercury speciation in sediments from 70 estuaries globally. Abundant mercury and sulfur species were found in the global estuarine sediments. Up to 727 μg THg/g dw and 880 ng MeHg/g dw were found in estuarine sediments, showing the
