A recurrent neural network for rapid detection of delivery errors during real-time portal dosimetry.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Real-time portal dosimetry compares measured images with predicted images to detect delivery errors as the radiotherapy treatment proceeds. This work aimed to investigate the performance of a recurrent neural network for processing image metrics so as to detect delivery errors as early as possible in the treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans of six prostate patients were used to generate sequences of predicted portal images. Errors were introduced into the treatment plans and the modified plans were delivered to a water-equival

Africa's unpaid outbreak frontline workers: The political economy of community health worker neglect.

Community health workers (CHWs) in Africa perform indispensable functions across the outbreak response cycle. These include early case detection, contact tracing, risk communication and zoonotic interface monitoring. They depend on community embeddedness, an asset the formal health system cannot replicate in emergencies. Yet despite a substantial evidence base, more than 80% of Africa's 1.4 million CHWs operate under volunteerism frameworks, without formal employment, salaries or enforceable protections. This is not a consequence of resource scarcity. It is a deliberate programme design choice

Shortcuts to state transitions for active matter.

Shortcut schemes can accelerate quasi-static processes in passive systems by adding auxiliary controls to realize swift transitions between equilibrium states. In active systems, however, inherently directed motion driven by free energy consumption continually drives the system away from equilibrium. In this work, we develop a shortcut framework to realize swift state transitions for active systems operating in the weak activity regime. An auxiliary potential is introduced to guide the system along a predefined distribution path, allowing it to reach the target state within a finite time. Cons

GPU-accelerated visualization of historical wildfire events with temporal geospatial data integration.

Wildfires severely affect ecosystems and populations. Reconstructing documented fires helps emergency services study hazards and train responders. Many current tools are difficult to integrate and lack real-time performance across scenarios. This paper presents a GPU-accelerated Unity system for replaying and rendering documented wildfire events with temporal precision. The proposed method is a visualization pipeline for historical fire records-not a fire propagation model-using recorded rather than computed ignition and extinction times. It integrates geospatial processing, particle rendering

From Sensing Mechanisms to System Co-Design: Graphene-Based Sensors and Readout Circuits.

Graphene-based materials combining outstanding electrical, thermal, optical and mechanical properties have demonstrated remarkable potential for high-performance sensing across optoelectronic, molecular, mechanical, magnetic and thermal applications. However, practical graphene sensing often involves relatively small stimulus-induced changes in diverse electrical quantities, requiring dedicated readout electronics for accurate detection and conditioning. Existing reviews rarely treat sensing mechanisms and readout architectures in a unified system co-design context, which leaves a gap between

Is psoas muscle index an effective predictor of outcomes following robotic total hip arthroplasty?

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and function, is closely linked to poor health and has been associated with inferior outcomes in total hip arthroplasty (THA). Psoas Muscle Index (PMI) is a radiographic metric inversely correlated with sarcopenia. It was hypothesized that low PMI patients would have worse outcomes following THA. METHODS: A retrospective review of 515 patients who underwent robotic primary THA between 2014 and 2022 at a single, urban, academic health system with 2-year follow-up data was performed. Psoas Muscle Index was calculated from preoperative computed t

Modeling of a Novel Approach to Water Recovery from Sugar Cane Vinasse: Optimization of Exergy Efficiency, Heat Exchange Area, and Thermal Performance Ratio Using Genetic Algorithm and TOPSIS.

Historically, multistage flash distillation (MSF) led potable water production. By 2019, emerging technologies largely replaced MSF; however, it remains attractive for its energy and exergetic efficiency due to its reliance on low-temperature heat sources, especially when cogeneration is involved. In contrast, the sugar-energy industry consumes around 0.7 m3 of water per metric ton of sugar cane processed. Rising environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) concerns have intensified efforts to reduce water use. Accordingly, this study identified an optimal configuration for integratin

Reinforcement learning with graph neural network (RL-GNN) fusion for real-time financial fraud detection: a context-aware community mining approach.

The research work introduces a new framework which optimizes reinforcement learning with graph neural networks for detecting fraudulent transactions in unbalanced financial data. The proposed method connects community-swapping data mining techniques with multi-type anomaly detection algorithms. The method uses time-series patterns combined with structural properties and contextual features to detect fraudulent transactions. The model system uses Graph Attention Networks (GAT) connected to an RL controller which enhances fraud detection results through a reward mechanism that balances precision

Surrogate Modelling for Oxygen Uptake Prediction Using LSTM Neural Network.

Oxygen uptake (V˙O2) is an important metric in any exercise test including walking and running. It can be measured using portable spirometers or metabolic analyzers. Those devices are, however, not suitable for constant use by consumers due to their costs, difficulty of operation and their intervening in the physical integrity of their users. Therefore, it is important to develop approaches for the indirect estimation of V˙O2-based measurements of motion parameters, heart rate data and application-specific measurements from consumer-grade sensors. Typically, these approaches are based on linea

NeuroSCORE is a genome-wide omics-based model that identifies candidate disease genes of the central nervous system.

To identify candidate disease genes of central nervous system (CNS) phenotypes, we created the Neurogenetic Systematic Correlation of Omics-Related Evidence (NeuroSCORE). We identified five genome-wide metrics highly associated with CNS phenotypes to score 19,601 protein-coding genes. Genes scored one point per metric (range: 0-5), identifying 8298 scored genes (scores ≥ 1) and 1601 "high scoring" genes (scores ≥ 3). Using logistic regression, we determined the odds ratio that genes with a NeuroSCORE from 1 to 5 would be associated with known CNS-related phenotypes compared to genes that score

Pediatric medical genetics house call: Telemedicine for the next generation of patients and providers.

In an era of increasing technology and interaction with the patient bedside, we explore the role of relocating the bedside from the hospital to the home using telemedicine. The COVID-19 pandemic pushed telemedicine from small and pilot programs to widespread practice at an unprecedented rate. With the rapid implementation of telemedicine, it is important to consider how to create a telehealth system that provides both good care for patients and families while maintaining an excellent education environment for trainees of all levels. To this end, we developed telemedicine educational milestones

Intermittent muscle activity in the feedback loop of postural control system during natural quiet standing.

The origin of continual body oscillation during quiet standing is a neural-muscular-skeletal closed feedback loop system that includes insufficient joint stiffness and a time delay. Thus, muscle activity and joint oscillations are nonlinear during quiet standing, making it difficult to demonstrate the muscular-skeletal relationship experimentally. Here we experimentally revealed this relationship using intermittent control theory, in which non-actuation works to stabilize the skeletal system towards equilibrium. We found that leg muscles were activated/inactivated when the state point was loca

Laser speckle imaging for biofilm viability assessment: a noninvasive alternative to the MTT assay.

Accurate measurement of cell viability in biofilms is critical in biology and medicine. We propose two laser speckle-based methods to assess the viability of Candida tropicalis biofilms. Time-varying speckle images were processed using temporal correlation analysis and frequent-motion imaging, and the resulting metrics were compared against the standard MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. A high Pearson correlation coefficient (>0.99) was observed between both speckle-based metrics and MTT. For C. tropicalis biofilms in microplates, the proposed approach p

Development of a glycated hemoglobin prediction model using continuous glucose monitoring metrics in pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus: insights into average glucose and recent glycemic trends.

PURPOSE: Given the limitations of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) metrics have been proposed as complementary indicators of glycemic control. This study evaluated the association between CGM metrics and HbA1c and developed HbA1c prediction models in Korean pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed CGM data from 85 patients aged 2-18 years using real-time CGM systems (G6 or G7). CGM records over 12 weeks were segmented into 5 intervals (0-2, 0-4, 4-8, 8-12, and 0-12 weeks) prior to HbA1c measurement. Metrics i

High-resolution esophageal manometry in pediatrics: Effect of esophageal length on diagnostic measures.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution esophageal manometry (HREM), derived esophageal pressure topography metrics (EPT), integrated relaxation pressure (IRP), and distal latency (DL) are influenced by age and size. Combined pressure and intraluminal impedance also allow derivation of metrics that define distension pressure and bolus flow timing. We prospectively investigated the effects of esophageal length on these metrics to determine whether adjustment strategies are required for children. METHODS: Fifty-five children (12.3 ± 4.5 years) referred for HREM, and 30 healthy adult volunteers (46.9 ± 3.8

A Self-Consistent Phase Field Crystal Method for Twisted Bilayer Graphene.

Correlated electronic phenomena in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene have garnered widespread research interest in two-dimensional materials science. As a powerful multiscale framework bridging atomic-scale resolution and mesoscopic structural evolution, the structural phase field crystal method has been widely adopted for graphene system studies. In this work, we develop a self-consistent XPFC model specifically for twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) simulations. By globally optimizing the core free-energy functional parameters via a genetic algorithm, the proposed model achieves a marked imp
