Serosurvey and observational study of US Army Veterinary Corps officers for Q fever antibodies from 1989 to 2008.

Since World War II, the military has experienced outbreaks of Q fever among deploying units including recent case reports of Q fever in US military personnel returning from serving in the Middle East during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Occupational exposure and prevalence of Q fever among US Army Veterinary Corps officers have not been examined. A retrospective serosurvey and observational study of 500 military veterinarians were conducted using archived serum specimens from military veterinarians who entered and served between 1989 and 2008 and were tested for expos

Community integration after deployment to Afghanistan: a longitudinal investigation of Danish soldiers.

OBJECTIVE: In the years following military deployment, soldiers may experience problems integrating into the community. However, little is known about the nature and prevalence of these problems and if they relate to posttraumatic symptomatology. METHODS: In a prospective, longitudinal study of Danish soldiers deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 (N = 743), we assessed community reintegration difficulties 2.5 years after home coming (study sample: N = 454). Furthermore, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were assessed before, during, and after deployment. Trajectories of PTSD symptom…

Factors associated with mild traumatic brain injury in veterans and military personnel: a systematic review.

A history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is common among military members who served in Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND). We completed a systematic review to describe the cognitive, mental health, physical health, functional, social, and cost consequences of mTBI in Veteran and military personnel. Of 2668 reviewed abstracts, the 31 included studies provided very low strength evidence for the questions of interest. Cognitive, physical, and mental health symptoms were commonly reported by Veterans/military members with a history of mTBI. On average, t

Leader-Inspired Nutrition: Promoting Safe Dietary Supplement Use for Service Members.

Military readiness and performance are critical to national defense. Service Members must maintain their health and fitness to remain deployable. Dietary supplement use in the military is prevalent and remains a significant concern due to rampant misinformation, product adulteration, and documented adverse events. In March 2022, the Department of Defense issued Instruction (DoDI) 6130.06: Use of Dietary Supplements in the DoD, formally establishing Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) [1] as the program of record for everything related to dietary supplements. Leaders, as role models within their

Individual and Military Factors That Modify the Association Between Recent Sexual Trauma and Health Outcomes Among U.S. Service Members and Veterans.

Sexual trauma (ST), which includes both sexual harassment and sexual assault, is associated with a variety of adverse mental and physical health outcomes in military and civilian populations. However, little is known about whether certain individual or military attributes or prior experiences may modify the relationship between recent ST and mental or physical health outcomes. Data from a longitudinal cohort study of current and former military members were used to examine whether individual and military factors modify the association between recent ST and health outcomes (posttraumatic stress

Reappraising the Use of Systemic Immunomodulators for Psoriasis and Eczema in the Military.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are chronic, immune-mediated skin disorders that are disqualifying for entrance into the military. Both conditions can cause difficulty wearing body armor and other protective equipment when poorly controlled, limiting a service member's ability to train and deploy worldwide. In addition, these conditions may be exacerbated by military service because of increased exposure to austere environments, extreme temperatures, stress, skin injury, bug bites, and vaccinations Service members have limited treatment options because of restrictions on systemic

Respiratory tract infections in the military environment.

Military personnel fighting in contemporary battlefields as well as those participating in combat training are at risk of contracting respiratory infections. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that soldiers deployed to the harsh environment have higher rates of newly reported respiratory symptoms than non-deployers. Acute respiratory diseases are the principle reason for outpatient treatment and hospitalization among military personnel, with an incidence exceeding that of the adult civilian population by up to three-fold. Adenoviruses, influenza A and B viruses, Streptococcus pneumoniae

Mental health outcomes at the end of the British involvement in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence of mental health outcomes in UK personnel at the end of the British involvement in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.AimsWe examined the prevalence of mental disorders and alcohol misuse, whether this differed between serving and ex-serving regular personnel and by deployment status. METHOD: This is the third phase of a military cohort study (2014-2016; n = 8093). The sample was based on participants from previous phases (2004-2006 and 2007-2009) and a new randomly selected sample of those who had joined the UK armed forces since 2009. RESULT

Children's response to parental separation during operation desert storm.

OBJECTIVE: Commonly held attitudes concerning the effects of parental wartime deployment on children have usually been guided by stereotype, rather than scientific data. To determine the effects of Operation Desert Storm on military children and their parents, the authors compared children and families with and without a deployed soldier-parent prior to and during Operation Desert Storm. METHOD: Three hundred eighty-three children and the remaining caretaking parent completed self- and parent-report instruments concerning child and family functioning and life stressors.
