Anticancer potential of Marina Crystal Minerals (MCM) against the growth of murine mammary adenocarcinoma cells in vivo.

In vitro studies have shown that Marina Crystal Minerals (MCM), a crystallized mixture of minerals and trace elements from sea water, possesses apoptotic and immune modulatory effects in human breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231. The current study aimed to evaluate MCM's anticancer effect in vivo against murine mammary adenocarcinoma cells and to explore its underlying mechanisms. Mice were inoculated intramuscularly with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells, a breast adenocarcinoma. Tumors became palpable within 9 days. Tumor-bearing mice were injected with MCM intraperitoneally (IP) or intratumo…

Association of TRPM5 Asn235Ser Polymorphism and Trace Elements/Minerals in Chronic Gastritis Patients: a Case-Control Study.

The link between chronic gastritis and chemosensory receptors is considered promising for disease prediction and treatment. The transient receptor potential melastatin member channel 5 (TRPM5) is an ion channel and may be a chemosensor in the gastrointestinal tract. Trace elements and minerals involved in many protein structures can change ion channel activity. Our study aimed to determine trace element and mineral levels according to TRPM5 Asn235Ser missense polymorphism distributions in patients with H. pylori (+) and (-) gastritis and to uncover their possible association with disease patho…

Exposure to heavy metals and trace minerals in first trimester and maternal blood pressure change over gestation.

BACKGROUND: While several heavy metals and trace minerals have been linked with hypertensive disorders during pregnancy (HDP) in women, no studies have estimated the relationship of exposure to these chemicals, both independently and as a mixture, with systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) over gestation. OBJECTIVES: We examined individual and joint effects of 1st trimester chemicals with SBP and DBP over gestation, and whether those chemicals were associated with HDP. METHODS: We used data from 1832 non-obese pregnant women with low-risk antenatal profiles from the…

The Effect of Aeration on Mn(II) Sorbed to Clay Minerals and Its Impact on Cd Retention.

Manganese is a redox-sensitive element in soils and sediments that plays an important role in the retention of trace elements. Under anoxic conditions, clay minerals were shown to increase Cd retention by favoring the precipitation of Mn(II) phases. In this study, we investigated the influence of aeration on anoxically formed Mn solid phases and its impact on Cd retention in the presence of two clay minerals with low Fe contents, a natural kaolinite (KGa-1b) and a synthetic montmorillonite (Syn-1). Ca-saturated KGa-1b and Syn-1 were pre-equilibrated with Mn2+ and Cd2+ under anoxic conditions f…

Association of vitamins, minerals, and lead with lipoprotein(a) in a cross-sectional cohort of US adults.

Lipoprotein(a)(Lp[a]) is a low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C)-like particle with potent pro-atherothrombotic properties. The association of Lp(a) with several circulating factors, including vitamins, remains unresolved. We performed an observational analysis using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III cohort, a cohort used to monitor the nutrition status of US-citizens. We used multivariable linear regression to test associations of Lp(a) and LDL-C with levels of serum vitamins and minerals and whole-blood lead. Analyses controlled for factors known to associate wit…

Effect of Coexisting Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides on Cr(VI) Reduction by Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Minerals.

Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals are important electron sources for Cr(VI) reduction in subsurface environments. However, it is not clear how iron (oxyhydr)oxides impact Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II)-bearing clays as the two minerals can coexist in soil and sediment aggregates. This study investigated Cr(VI) reduction in the mixed suspensions of reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and ferrihydrite (Fe(II)/Cr(VI) = 3:1). When the mineral premixing time increased from 0 to 72 h, Cr(VI) reduction was accelerated prominently in the initial stage, while Cr(VI) sorption was inhibited drastically. Mineral pre…

Dynamic changes in the distribution of minerals in relation to phytic acid accumulation during rice seed development.

Phytic acid (inositol hexakisphosphate [InsP(6)]) is the storage compound of phosphorus in seeds. As phytic acid binds strongly to metallic cations, it also acts as a storage compound of metals. To understand the mechanisms underlying metal accumulation and localization in relation to phytic acid storage, we applied synchrotron-based x-ray microfluorescence imaging analysis to characterize the simultaneous subcellular distribution of some mineral elements (phosphorus, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, and copper) in immature and mature rice (Oryza sativa) seeds. This fine-imaging method can reve

Transformation of reactive iron minerals in a permeable reactive barrier (biowall) used to treat TCE in groundwater.

Iron and sulfur reducing conditions generally develop in permeable reactive barrier systems (PRB) constructed to treat contaminated groundwater. These conditions allow formation of FeS mineral phases. FeS readily degrades TCE, but a transformation of FeS to FeS2 could dramatically slow the rate of TCE degradation in the PRB. This study uses acid volatile sulfide (AVS) and chromium reducible sulfur (CRS) as probes for FeS and FeS2 to investigate iron sulfide formation and transformation in a column study and PRB field study dealing with TCE degradation. Solid phase iron speciation shows that mo

The role of trace minerals in the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis and a new effect of calcitonin.

The physiologic role of calcitonin in mineral and bone homeostasis is not very well understood. Very few longitudinal studies have reported the effects of calcitonin therapy on trace minerals in postmenopausal osteoporosis despite the documented involvement of trace minerals in normal skeletal metabolism. Several trace minerals, particularly magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn), essential for organic bone matrix synthesis have been known for at least three decades. The present study was designed to determine whether the mineral profile was different between 70 osteoporotic and 30 nonosteoporotic postm…

A review of the status of magnesium and related minerals in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age that remains unexplained after a thorough case inve … major cause of SIDS. Numerous investigators have compared the concentration of magnesium, and other minerals from soft tissues and bone in SIDS with non-SIDS controls (normal infants who died suddenly of known cause such as trauma). Because of rapid shifts of minerals during early development, SIDS and control infants must be matched for gestational and po …

Increased expression of manganese-containing superoxide dismutase in rat lungs after inhalation of inflammatory and fibrogenic minerals.

Steady-state mRNA levels and immunoreactive protein for manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) were assayed in rat lungs after su … mutase (CuZnSOD)] were less striking and did not correlate precisely with inflammatory potential of minerals. Inflammatory changes in BAL correlated directly with steady-state MnSOD mRNA levels in lung. Inhalation of TiO2-F, a noninflammatory, nonfibrogenic mineral, failed to induce MnSOD or mRNAs for other AOE. Our data suggest that particles causing infl …

Feeding of very-low-birth-weight infants with breast-milk enriched by energy, nitrogen and minerals: FM85.

Although human milk is the best tolerated nutrition for very-low-birth-weight infants, it does not cover the special requirements of premature babies. The protein content does not allow a growth rate comparable to the intrauterine weight gain, and the calcium and phosphorus supply is by far too small for a full mineralization of the growing skeleton. If a sufficient caloric supply should be achieved, the low energy/water ratio leads to a high volume load for stomach and circulation. We therefore searched for a solution with an enriched human milk. As main energy carrier, polydextrose (dextrinm

Phytomelatonin and plant mineral nutrition.

Plant mineral nutrition is critical for agricultural productivity and for human nutrition; however, the availability of mineral elements is spatially and temporally heterogeneous in many ecosystems and agricultural landscapes. Nutrient imbalances trigger intricate signalling networks that modulate plant acclimation responses. One signalling agent of particular importance in such networks is phytomelatonin, a pleiotropic molecule with multiple functions. Evidence indicates that deficiencies or excesses of nutrients generally increase phytomelatonin levels in certain tissues, and it is increasin

Skeletal mineralization: mechanisms and diseases.

Skeletal mineralization is initiated in matrix vesicles (MVs), the small extracellular vesicles derived from osteoblasts and chondrocytes. Calcium and inorganic phosphate (Pi) taken up by MVs form hydroxyapatite crystals, which propagate on collagen fibrils to mineralize the extracellular matrix. Insufficient calcium or phosphate impairs skeletal mineralization. Because active vitamin D is necessary for intestinal calcium absorption, vitamin D deficiency is a significant cause of rickets/osteomalacia. Chronic hypophosphatemia also results in rickets/osteomalacia. Excessive action of fibroblast

SPARC/osteonectin in mineralized tissue.

Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC/osteonectin/BM40) is one of the most abundant non-collagenous protein expressed in mineralized tissues. This review will focus on elucidating functional roles of SPARC in bone formation building upon results from non-mineralized cells and tissues, the phenotype of SPARC-null bones, and recent discoveries of human diseases with either dysregulated expression of SPARC or mutations in the gene encoding SPARC that give rise to bone pathologies. The capacity of SPARC to influence pathways involved in extracellular matrix assembly such as procollag

Mineral metabolism in heart disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Strong experimental and clinical evidence points towards a substantial contribution of mineral metabolism disorders to the initiation and progression of cardiovascular disease. Vice versa, recent work suggests that cardiovascular disease may also cause mineral metabolism alterations. RECENT FINDINGS: Experimental studies suggest that hyperphosphatemia, elevated plasma levels of phosphaturic hormones--parathyroid hormone and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23)--and hypovitaminosis D exert detrimental effects on vascular tissue and on the myocardium. Accordingly, in longitud
