PURPOSE: Persons requiring a lower limb amputation often have cardiovascular diseases that reduce cardiac function, which may complicate recovery and rehabilitation after an amputation. This systematic review analysis the association between cardiovascular diseases and mobility in persons with a lower limb amputation.
METHOD: Four databases were searched for studies published before August 2016 using database-specific keywords and synonyms for amputation, cardiovascular diseases and mobility. Assessment of the publications was performed based on predefined criteria; first title and abstract a

Mobility disability in older adults can arise from single system problems, such as discrete musculoskeletal injury. In frail older adults, however, mobility disability is part of a complex web of problems. The approach to their rehabilitation must take that complexity into account, as is reported by Fairhall et al. First, their overall health state must be assessed, which is achieved by a comprehensive geriatric assessment. The assessment can show how a particular patient came to be disabled, so that an individualized care plan can be worked out. Whether this approach works in general can be e

This critical review examines the complex interplay between slow mobility modes-specifically walking, cycling, and micromobility-and their associated health and environmental impacts. It is timely in view of various global initiatives to promote walkability and cyclability, and a paradigm shift towards people-oriented transport systems. Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we selected 458 papers and conducted detailed content analysis. The paper first identifies key themes related to risk and benefits, pinpointing traffic crashes

BACKGROUND: Promoting patient mobility helps improve patient outcomes, but mobility status is not widely tracked nor do patients have specific individualized mobility goals.
PURPOSE: We evaluated nursing adoption of mobility measures and daily mobility goal achievement using the Johns Hopkins Mobility Goal Calculator (JH-MGC), a tool to guide an individualized patient mobility goal based on the level of mobility capacity.
METHOD: Built on a translating research into practice framework, the Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion (JH-AMP) program was the vehicle to promote use of the mo

Many adults older than 60 yr experience mobility limitations. Although physical exercise improves older adults' mobility, differences in baseline mobility produce large variations in individual responses to interventions, and these responses could further vary by the type and dose of exercise. Here, we propose an exercise prescription model for older adults based on their current mobility status.

UNLABELLED: Background Stroke is the leading cause of severe disability and many survivors report long-term physical or cognitive impairments that may impact their ability to achieve community mobility (CM).
PURPOSE: To determine the extent to which people with chronic stroke achieve CM compared to age-matched norms or non-neurologically impaired controls. Methods The StrokEDGE outcome measures were searched to identify validated tools that included >25% of items addressing CM. MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, PubMed, PEDro and the Cochrane databases were searched from 2001 to 2015 with the i

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship and the directionality between mobility and cognitive performance.
METHOD: A cross-sectional analysis of a racially/ethnically diverse sample of 327 community-dwelling adults (mean age=68.9±9.9 y; range, 40 to 100 y) categorized as having no mobility dysfunction, upper-extremity (UE) impairment, lower-extremity (LE) impairment, or mobility limitation (both UE and LE impairments), and compared by global cognition with multiple hierarchical linear regression adjusted for sociodemographic, health, and mood factors. A bootstrapping mediation analysis investi…

A number of resources, every year, being spent to tackle early detection of cardiac abnormalities which is one of the leading causes of deaths all over the Globe. The challenges for healthcare systems includes early detection, portability and mobility of patients. This paper presents a categorical review of smartphone-based systems that can detect cardiac abnormalities by the analysis of Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photoplethysmography (PPG) and the limitation and challenges of these system. The ECG based systems can monitor, record and forward signals for analysis and an alarm can be triggere

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of comorbidities with mobility limitation and functional disability in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and to identify which comorbidity indicator is the most appropriate to determine this association.
METHODS: Sixty rheumatoid arthritis patients were enrolled in a cross-sectional study for a period of 11 months. Comorbidities were assessed using three indicators: (i) the total number of comorbidities; (ii) the Charlson comorbidity index; and (iii) the functional comorbidity index. Disease activity was assessed using the Disease Activity Score 28.…

The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence, type, scene and seasonal variation of fall related injuries, and the impact of socio-economic factors, mobility limitation, and the most common diseases on the risk of injurious falls over a 10-year follow-up. Elderly residents of Jyväskylä, Finland, aged initially 75 and 80 years, took part in the study in 1989-1990. The health and functional capacity assessments were carried out at the baseline. Injurious falls were monitored over a 10-year period. The rate of injurious falls per thousand person-years was 188 among women and 78 among m…

HYPOTHESIS: Catalysts, chemical, gas, and bio- sensing devices fabricated from porous nanoparticle films show better performance and sensitivity than their bulk material counterparts because of their high specific surface area. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique is a cost-effective, fast, versatile, and easy to perform method to fabricate porous nanoparticle films. However, conventional EPD is currently limited by the fact that the deposition rate decreases with time, resulting in an eventual plateau in the deposit yield. Here, we sought to overcome this limitation by establishing and
