From Resources to Beliefs: The Mediating Roles of Parental Educational Involvement in the Association Between Parental Psychological Capital and Adolescents' Academic Self-Efficacy in Shanxi Province, China.

Parental psychological resources are important factors that may impact the academic self-efficacy of adolescents. Drawing on family systems, social cognitive, and psychological capital theories, this study employed a questionnaire survey design to examine the associations between adolescents' perceived parental psychological capital and their academic self-efficacy and to investigate the mediating role of perceived parental educational involvement. Furthermore, father- and mother-related pathways were compared to identify potential differences in both direct and indirect effects. Validated que

Relationships between adult emotional states and indicators of health care utilization: Findings from the National Health Interview Survey 2006-2014.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with serious psychological distress have a high likelihood of mental health problems severe enough to cause serious impairment in social and occupational functioning requiring treatment. These adults visit doctors frequently yet have poor health compared to adults without serious psychological distress. This study examined associations between emotional states of serious psychological distress in relationship to healthcare utilization indicators. A guiding hypothesis was that somatization underlying emotional states contributes to excessive healthcare seeking among adults wit

A biopsychosocial perspective on endometriosis: the importance of psychological inflexibility.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment strategies for endometriosis have traditionally been biomedical. There is a need for a more multidimensional understanding of endometriosis and more targeted and individualized treatment interventions, including psychological approaches. METHODS: The aims of this study were twofold: (1) to identify key biopsychosocial characteristics in individuals attending a tertiary clinic for endometriosis and (2) to inform the development of future, targeted, and efficacious interventions by examining the importance of psychological processes central to two scientific models, pain

A Bayesian account of 'hysteria'.

This article provides a neurobiological account of symptoms that have been called 'hysterical', 'psychogenic' or 'medically unexplained', which we will call functional motor and sensory symptoms. We use a neurobiologically informed model of hierarchical Bayesian inference in the brain to explain functional motor and sensory symptoms in terms of perception and action arising from inference based on prior beliefs and sensory information. This explanation exploits the key balance between prior beliefs and sensory evidence that is mediated by (body focused) attention, symptom expectations, physica

Study protocol of the iMPaCT project: a longitudinal cohort study assessing psychological determinants, sexual behaviour and chlamydia (re)infections in heterosexual STI clinic visitors.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia), the most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the Netherlands, can lead to severe reproductive complications. Reasons for the sustained chlamydia prevalence in young individuals, even in countries with chlamydia screening programs, might be the asymptomatic nature of chlamydia infections, and high reinfection rates after treatment. When individuals are unaware of their infection, preventive behaviour or health-care seeking behaviour mostly depends on psychological determinants, such as risk perception. Furthermore, behaviour c

Adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and psychological distress, hazardous drinking, and problem gambling: A population-based study.

Recognition of ADHD in the adult population is relatively recent. Epidemiological research examining the mental health impact of ADHD in adulthood is thus limited. The objective of this study was to examine whether adult ADHD symptoms are associated with psychological distress, hazardous drinking, and problem gambling, after controlling for traumatic brain injury and sociodemographic characteristics. We analyzed data from a population-based survey administered in 2015 and 2016 to adults aged 18 years and over in Ontario, Canada (N = 3,817). Logistic regression was used to construct unadjusted

Maternal parenting and the development of adolescent self-esteem: A longitudinal twin study.

Adolescence is a critical period for self-esteem development, yet the extent to which perceived maternal parenting practices are prospectively associated with self-esteem after accounting for overlapping genetic and shared environmental influences remains unclear. Using longitudinal TwinLife data from 1524 German twins (323 monozygotic and 439 same-sex dizygotic twin pairs), this study examined perceived maternal warmth and psychological control from ages 13 to 15. Classical twin models decomposed genetic and environmental variance and covariance, and ACE-beta models estimated prospective asso

Proposed endophenotypes of dysthymia: evolutionary, clinical and pharmacogenomic considerations.

Dysthymia is highly prevalent--though underdiagnosed--occurring in at least 3% of the population. We conceptualize it as the clinical extension of adaptive traits that have developed during evolution to cope with stress and failure. A classification of dysthymias into anxious and anergic subtypes--and their putative association to bipolarity--is proposed. We further posit neurochemical and neurophysiological substrates for the two subtypes. A better recognition and understanding of dysthymic subtypes and their respective place in the affective spectrum will increase the proportion of people th

Psychological Distress After Inpatient Noncardiac Surgery: A Secondary Analysis of the Measurement of Exercise Tolerance Before Surgery Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and natural progression of psychological distress after major surgery. BACKGROUND: The recovery process after surgery imposes physical and mental burdens that put patients at risk of psychological distress. Understanding the natural course of psychological distress after surgery is critical to supporting the timely and tailored management of high-risk individuals. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the "Measurement of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery" multicentre cohort study (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK). Measurement of Exercis

[The relationship between therapeutic adherence and personality].

Inadequate adherence to long-term therapies significantly affects the course and outcome of the disease, and therefore poses a serious threat to both the effectiveness and success of treatment and the long-term well-being of patients. Therapeutic adherence is an extremely complex process, with a number of risk and protective factors identified, many of which underlie the psychological characteristics of the patient. A number of medication adherence models have been developed to take into account the psychological characteristics of patients, and recent research has examined the relationship be

Resilience in developmental psychopathology: contributions of the Project Competence Longitudinal Study.

Contributions of the Project Competence Longitudinal Study (PCLS) to resilience science and developmental psychopathology are highlighted in this article. Initiated by Norman Garmezy, the PCLS contributed models, measures, and methods, as well as working definitions of concepts like competence, developmental tasks, protective factors, and resilience. Findings from the study corroborated the feasibility of studying adaptation in a normative group of school children, identifying patterns of resilience, competence without major adversity, and maladaptive paths through life. Competence was multidi

Stress, coping, and adjustment in children with a chronic disease: a review of the literature.

PURPOSE: To review the literature on the consequences of having a chronic disease on the child's functioning in daily life. METHOD: A wide search of the literature resulted in the location of around 200 empirical studies with a focus on chronically ill children. This body of literature is discussed in three parts: (1) the academic and psychosocial adjustment of chronically ill children, (2) the ways chronically ill children cope with disease-related stress and other stressors, and (3) the effectiveness of coping strategies. RESULTS: Children with a chronic disease do not show lower school pe

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) amongst LGBT+ young adults: The role of psychological distress.

Rates of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other sexual or gender minority (LGBTQ+) young adults are high. Research is needed to elucidate potential mechanisms underpinning this elevated risk. In 2021, young adults in the United Kingdom and United States (n = 1475, aged 18-30) reported their NSSI history and psychological distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale) in an online survey. Participants were cisgender heterosexual (CH; n = 1100), cisgender sexual minority (CSM; lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual) (n = 272), or gender minority (GM; transg

Daddy's little girl goes to college: an investigation of females' perceived closeness with fathers and later risky behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the extent to which father-daughter relationships predicted risk-taking in a sample of female college students. Specifically, this study examined whether female adolescents' models of father psychological presence predicted substance use and sexual risk-taking, over and above impulsivity, depression, and other risky behaviors. METHODS: A sample of 203 female college students were administered several scales assessing father psychological presence, sexual risk-taking, substance use, impulsivity, and depression. RESULTS: Father psychological presence d

Decreased initial pupil size and shortened constriction latency due to negative mood states and mental fatigue in clinical subacute pain models.

Previous clinical studies on pupillary light reflex parameters showed shortened constriction latency (LAT) and decreased initial pupil size (INIT) due to increased numeric rating scale (NRS) scores, reflecting subjective pain intensity, in subacute pain models. As noxious stimulation causes pupil dilation, decreased INIT (pupil constriction) was an unexpected finding. Pain-related negative moods and mental fatigue might have caused this finding. We aimed to investigate how psychological states affect LAT/INIT in two subacute pain models. For psychological assessment, we used the Profile of Moo
