Visual memory transformations in dyslexia.

Representational Momentum refers to observers' distortion of recognition memory for pictures that imply motion because of an automatic mental process which extrapolates along the implied trajectory of the picture. Neuroimaging evidence suggests that activity in the magnocellular visual pathway is necessary for representational momentum to occur. It has been proposed that individuals with dyslexia have a magnocellular deficit, so it was hypothesised that these individuals would show reduced or absent representational momentum. In this study, 30 adults with dyslexia and 30 age-matched controls w

Right-sided infective endocarditis: an echocardiographic study.

Echocardiographic observations are described in 10 patients with right-sided bacterial endocarditis. Six of the nine patients with tricuspid regurgitation had shaggy echoes on the tricuspid valve, which were confirmed to be vegetations on autopsy in two patients. In six patients, right ventricular dilatation was present, and paradoxic septal motion was seen in four. In one of the patients with pulmonic valve endocarditis, the pulmonic valve and right ventricular outflow tract revealed the shaggy echoes in diastole, along with systolic fluttering of the pulmonic valve, right ventricular dilatat

Neural responses in autism during movie watching: Inter-individual response variability co-varies with symptomatology.

Naturalistic movie paradigms are exquisitely dynamic by nature, yet dedicated analytical methods typically remain static. Here, we deployed a dynamic inter-subject functional correlation (ISFC) analysis to study movie-driven functional brain changes in a population of male young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We took inspiration from the resting-state research field in generating a set of whole-brain ISFC states expressed by the analysed ASD and typically developing (TD) subjects along time. Change points of state expression often involved transitions between different s

Social emotional information processing in adults: Development and psychometrics of a computerized video assessment in healthy controls and aggressive individuals.

A computerized version of an assessment of Social-Emotional Information Processing (SEIP) using audio-video film stimuli instead of written narrative vignettes was developed for use in adult participants. This task allows for an assessment of encoding or relevant/irrelevant social-emotional information, attribution bias, and endorsement of appropriate, physically aggressive, and relationally aggressive responses to aversive social-emotional stimuli. The psychometric properties of this Video-SEIP (V-SEIP) assessment were examined in 75 healthy controls (HC) and in 75 individuals with DSM-5 Inte

Can tics be performed convincingly by an actor?

BACKGROUND: In the German movie "Vincent will Meer" a healthy actor portrays a man with Tourette's syndrome. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the performance of tics is convincing and whether this judgment depends on whether he/she suffers from tics or not. METHODS: While the movie was broadcasted in German cinemas, we put an online survey (including 28 questions on different aspects related to the observation, performance, and authenticity of tics) on the web pages of the German self-help group. 276/296 surveys submitted could be used for further analyses. RESULT:

Bacteria and vampirism in cinema.

A vampire is a non-dead and non-alive chimerical creature, which, according to various folklores and popular superstitions, feeds on blood of the living to draw vital force. Vampires do not reproduce by copulation, but by bite. Vampirism is thus similar to a contagious disease contracted by intravascular inoculation with a suspected microbial origin. In several vampire films, two real bacteria were staged, better integrated than others in popular imagination: Yersinia pestis and Treponema pallidum. Bacillus vampiris was created for science-fiction. These films are attempts to better define hum

Khantzian's 'self-medication hypothesis' of drug addiction and films by Martin Scorsese.

The portrayal of self-medication and drug use was studied in three films by Martin Scorsese: Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and The Departed (2006). Self-medication using nicotine in Raging Bull, cocaine in Goodfellas and sedatives in The Departed, exhibit mixed portrayals of the self-medication hypothesis. The temporal aspects of the hypothesis and credibility of character psychopathology show variation between the films. Across all films, the selection of particular drugs of choice for certain symptom clusters is consonant with that detailed in the self-medication hypothesis put forwa

Duplex-Doppler and cine-Bmode echography of the temporal-mandibular joint. Clinical validation.

We study, with the recently introduced method of analysis of the behavior of the TMJ through duplex-Doppler and cine-Bmode echography, a set of 38 patients already clinically examined. Among them we have 10 normal and 28 abnormal patients with various pathological conditions, 22 clicks of different intensities, three condylomeniscal lack of coordination and three locks. We obtained from the normal patients the typical duplex-Doppler spectra showing symmetrically alternate behavior and regular profiles during opening and closing of the mouth. In the case of clicks we obtained spectra with vario

Tracheal mucous transport in Beagles after long-term exposure to 1 ppm sulfur dioxide.

Tracheal mucous velocity was determined in eight purebred beagle dogs exposed intermittently to 1 ppm sulfur dioxide for 12 months. Three control dogs were also studied. Teflon disks filmed at constant speed through a bronchofiberscope served as indicators of mucous motion. An average of 16 disks were analyzed in each dog. Although there was no significant difference in average velocity for controls and the SO-2-exposed animals, the frequency distribution curve of individual disk velocities in SO-2-exposed dogs revealed significant slowing. No significant differences in mechanics of breathing

Identifying the neural mechanisms associated with older adults' dynamic theory of mind judgments during a movie-watching task.

Aging is associated with widespread deficits in theory of mind - the ability to infer others' mental and emotional states. Theory of mind is a complex construct, but age deficits are generally measured in a single domain, overlooking how older adults engage multiple theory of mind processes concurrently and spontaneously. The current work used neuroimaging to characterize the neural mechanisms associated with older adults' deficits in concurrent theory of mind judgments (awkwardness, deception) during a movie-watching task. 102 older adults (MAge = 73.5, SD = 6.6) and 110 young adults (MAge =

Altered frontoparietal EEG rhythms in mild cognitive impairment during high-recall movie-watching.

Engaging with movies as a high-cognitive task is an effective method for stimulating brain activity. However, the impact of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) on brain activity in higher-order regions related to autobiographical memory recall during movie watching remains unclear. In this study, we recorded the EEG of 43 healthy control (HC) individuals and 35 patients with MCI while they watched short old movie clips: one with low recall for 5 min and another with high recall for 5 min. The relationships between power indices and neuropsychological test results were assessed using Pearson's corr

A pilot, randomized clinical trial of dichoptic 3D movies versus dichoptic 2D movies for treatment of childhood intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: Surgical and nonsurgical treatments of childhood intermittent exotropia (IXT) often have unsatisfactory results due to poor sensory status. Dichoptic 3D movies may offer a novel treatment designed to reduce suppression, encourage fusion, and engage stereoacuity. Our aim was to assess whether 3D movies are superior to 2D sham movies treatment in treating children with IXT. METHODS: In this masked, pilot randomized clinical trial, 41 children aged 3-13 years with spontaneously manifested IXT (triple office distance control score ≥3.00; mean, 3.64 ± 0.72) were assigned to watch dicho

Art opening minds: An experimental study on the effects of temporal and perspectival complexity in film on open-mindedness.

Aesthetic Cognitivism posits that artworks have the potential to enhance open-mindedness. However, this claim has not yet been explored empirically. Here, we present two experiments that investigate the extent to which two formal features of the film - temporal and perspectival complexity - can 'open our minds'. In Experiment 1, we manipulated the temporal complexity of the film. Participants (Ntotal = 100) watched a film (Memento) either in its original non-chronological order or the same film in chronological order. In Experiment 2, we manipulated perspectival complexity in film. Participant

Testing the efficacy of a narrative short film in educating the public about providing emotional support to individuals with fertility problems.

BACKGROUND: To educate the public on how best to support people with fertility problems, a narrative short film "Ten Things Not to Say to Someone Struggling with Infertility" was created, depicting the impact that helpful versus unhelpful dialogue has on someone with fertility problems. METHODS: Before and after watching the video, 419 participants from the public were presented with a hypothetical vignette describing a woman experiencing fertility problems and asked about the likelihood that they would endorse a series of helpful and unhelpful statements when communicating with the protagoni
