Space motion sickness: A common neurovestibular dysfunction in microgravity.

This article presents a review of the current findings related to neurovestibular physiology, aetiology, and proposed theories on space motion sickness (SMS) during acute and sustained exposure to microgravity. The review discusses the available treatment options including medication and nonpharmacological countermeasure methods that help to prevent the development of SMS in weightlessness. Ground-based simulations using virtual reality, flight simulations, and Barany's chairs can be applied to study SMS and demonstrate its signs and symptoms to space crew members. Space motion sickness has be…

[Evaluation of Motion Sickness Induced by 3D Video Clips].

The use of stereoscopic images has been spreading rapidly. Nowadays, stereoscopic movies are nothing new to people. Stereoscopic systems dat … ng stereoscopic vision and that this is the main reason for the visual fatigue and visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) during 3D viewing. We have devised a method to simultaneously measure lens accommodation and convergence. We used this simultaneous measurement device to characterize 3D vision. Fixation distance was compared between accommodation and converg …

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and motion sickness susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: A functional vestibular system is a prerequisite for motion sickness (MS) to occur. The otolithic organs (saccule and utricle) are currently considered to be important in the pathogenesis of MS. Recent investigations have demonstrated that the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP) test is an objective evaluation of utricular function. To date, there is no functional guide that can serve as a diagnostic tool for individual susceptibility to MS. Therefore, we investigated the link between oVEMP and MS susceptibility. METHOD: The oVEMP test was performed on 31 MS susce…

Are evolutionary hypotheses for motion sickness "just-so" stories?

Vertebrates have evolved rapidly conditionable nausea and vomiting reflexes mediated by gut and brainstem receptors, clearly as a defense against neurotoxin ingestion. In 1977 Treisman proposed that sensory orientation linkages to emetic centers evolved for the same reason, and that motion sickness was an accidental byproduct. It was an "adaptationist" explanation for motion sickness, since it assumed that evolution has shaped all phenotypic traits for survival advantage. Treisman's "poison" theory is plausible, and frequently cited as the accepted scientific explanation for motion sickness. H…

Migraine and motion sickness independently contribute to visual discomfort.

The objective of this study was to evaluate, in patients with migraine and healthy volunteers, with and without a history of motion sickness, the degree of discomfort elicited by drifting striped patterns. Eighteen healthy volunteers (HV) and 30 migraine patients participated in the study. Discomfort was greater in migraine patients than in HV, and in individuals with a history of motion sickness than in those without, but the effect of history of migraine was independent of history of motion sickness. Generalized Estimating Equations models for binary correlated data revealed that these diffe…

Vestibulo-ocular reflex and motion sickness in figure skaters.

In order to determine the effect of figure skating on the functional plasticity of the vestibular system, we quantified vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and motion sickness (MS) intensity in 11 female figure skaters and 11 matched control subjects. Vestibular stimulation consisted of three cycles of sinusoidal rotation (0.025 Hz, +/-60 degrees /s) and two velocity steps of 60 degrees /s (acceleration 60 degrees /s(2)). Nauseogenic stimulation consisted of a constant velocity (60 degrees /s) off vertical axis rotation (OVAR) using a 15 degrees tilt angle. Subjective sickness symptoms were rated im…

Autonomic responses during motion sickness induced by virtual reality.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the development of subjective symptoms and heart rate variability (HRV) during motion sickness induced by virtual reality (VR). METHODS: Subjects were 10 healthy young volunteers. During VR immersion, subjects were immersed in a visual-vestibular conflict produced by VR. The levels of the subjective symptoms were assessed by Graybiel's and Hamilton's criteria. HRV was determined by measuring microvascular blood flow or electrocardiogram. RESULTS: Subjective symptoms evaluated by Graybiel's and Hamilton's criteria were gradually worsened during VR. Power spectrum analysi…

Motion sickness: advances in pathogenesis, prediction, prevention, and treatment.

Motion sickness has a major influence on modern traveling activities and the rapidly spreading engagement in virtual reality immersion. Recent evidence emphasizes the role of the otoliths in the pathogenesis of motion sickness, and several new theories may help explain its occurrence beyond the traditional sensory conflict theory. A promising new direction is the recently reported association of genetic polymorphism of the alpha2-adrenergic receptor with increased autonomic response to stress and motion sickness. Various physiological measures for the evaluation and prediction of motion sickne…

Motion sickness decreases arterial pressure and therefore acceleration tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common aeromedical problem that may occur in pilots exposed to increased gravitoinertial load in the head-to-foot direction (+Gz). Since motion sickness may affect autonomic nervous functions including cardiovascular control, it was hypothesized that it might interfere with cardiovascular responses to high +Gz, thereby decreasing G tolerance. METHODS: G tolerance and cardiovascular responses to increased G load were studied in nine subjects in a centrifuge environment under two conditions. In the motion sickness condition, the subject was exposed to a motion s…

Sex differences in tolerance to visually-induced motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Women report a history of motion sickness (MS) about twice as frequently as men, but the results of experimental studies are equivocal. In the present investigation, we sought to replicate previous findings that women report a greater history of MS than men when interrogated with MS history questionnaires. We examined the hypothesis that those reporting that they are prone to MS are less likely to volunteer for MS provocative experiments than those who are MS resistant. Finally, using a subset of these participants, we exposed men and women, during two separate sessions, to visuall…

Relation between motion sickness susceptibility and vasovagal syncope susceptibility.

Motion sickness is common in the population, especially in children, but its physiopathology is only partially understood and the true nature of the particular susceptibility of certain subjects remains completely unknown. Some symptoms of motion sickness, like pallor and cold sweating, are of an autonomic nature and the role of the autonomic nervous system in vasovagal syncope is well known. Our aim was therefore to study the relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and vasovagal syncope susceptibility. Questionnaires about susceptibility to motion sickness and to vasovagal syncope…

The correlation between aerobic fitness and motion sickness susceptibility.

Susceptibility to motion sickness has been linked to aerobic fitness in several studies, however, these studies have not elucidated the underlying physiological mechanism by which increased aerobic fitness is related to a decreased ability to tolerate motion sickness stimuli. This pilot study provides further evidence of a relationship between aerobic fitness and motion sickness susceptibility. It also suggests that aerobic capacity is more specifically linked to signs and symptoms of vasomotor origin including stomach discomfort, nausea and/or vomiting, headache, and diaphoresis. By independe…

Spatial task performance, sex differences, and motion sickness susceptibility.

There are substantial individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness, yet little is known about what mediates these differences. Spatial ability and sex have been suggested as possible factors in this relationship. 89 participants (57 women) were administered a Motion Sickness Questionnaire that assesses motion sickness susceptibility, a Water-level Task that gauges sensitivity to gravitational upright, and a Mental Rotation Task that tests an individual's awareness of how objects typically move in space. Significant sex differences were observed in performance of both the Water-l…

Motion sickness potentiates core cooling during immersion in humans.

1. The present study tested the hypothesis that motion sickness affects thermoregulatory responses to cooling in humans. 2. Ten healthy male volunteers underwent three separate head-out immersions in 28 degrees C water after different preparatory procedures. In the 'control' procedure immersion was preceded by a rest period. In the 'motion sickness' procedure immersion was preceded by provocation of motion sickness in a human centrifuge. This comprised rapid and repeated alterations of the gravitational (G-) stress in the head-to-foot direction, plus a standardized regimen of head movements at…

Motion sickness occurrence does not correlate with nystagmus characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis whereby eye movements as such may be an important factor in the development of motion sickness (MS). The horizontal eye movements of 27 subjects were measured during earth vertical axis rotation (EVAR) and during off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). Two groups were set up, one including subjects who suffered severe MS during the test, and the other including subjects with no MS symptoms. We found no differences in nystagmus parameters (EVAR: gain and time constant; OVAR: eye velocity modulation and eye position modulation) between the MS and t…

Motion sickness induced by sinusoidal linear acceleration in rats.

The characteristics of linear acceleration to cause motion sickness of rats were examined using pica as a behavioral index of motion sickness. A vestibular sled was used to generate sinusoidal linear acceleration. At 0.4 Hz and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the effectiveness of linear acceleration in inducing motion sickness was X-axis > Y-axis > Z-axis. At 0.4 Hz and along the X-axis, rats suffered from more severe motion sickness with a high peak G load (0.15 G) than with a low one (0.08 G). Along the X-axis and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the severity of motion sickness was no…

Treatment efficacy of intramuscular promethazine for space motion sickness.

Intramuscular promethazine and its efficacy in the treatment of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) were evaluated using standardized questions administered during postflight debriefings to crewmembers immediately after their first Shuttle flight. Space Motion Sickness was graded as none, mild, moderate, or severe, based on published criteria. Immediate symptom relief (within 1-2 h) was evaluated by subjective reports; medication efficacy was based on scores derived from the four most frequently reported symptoms of SMS: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and stomach awareness. Scores were given for …

Motion sickness, vascular changes accompanying pseudo-coriolis-induced nausea.

We have previously shown that objective measurements of blood flow changes constitute a useful index in assessing susceptibility to nausea produced by cross-coupled angular accelerations (Coriolis stimulation). The findings of this study confirm the value of using the same technique for assessing the degree of nausea produced by pseudo-Coriolis effects.
