We report a case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis presenting in a patient with AIDS and review the literature on mucormycosis occurring in the setting of HIV disease. Mucormycosis in HIV is rare. However, it can be the presenting opportunistic infection in AIDS. Predisposing factors for Mucor infection in HIV disease include low CD4 count, neutropenia, and active intravenous drug use. Mucormycosis can present in the basal ganglia, the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, or may be disseminated. The disease may develop insidiously or may progress rapidly with a fulminant course…

Mucormycosis with hemipansinusitis and left orbital involvement was observed in a 66-year-old diabetic woman. Diagnosis was confirmed by mycology and pathology examinations. The patient was treated surgically with wide exeresis of necrotic tissue and medically with amphotericin B and insulin. Cure was obtained after three months of treatment at the cost of retraction of the left nostril due to infectious lysis and resection of the nasal infrastructure. The sinus involvement was exceptional compared with reports in the literature. Mucormycosis is an uncommon condition caused by opportunistic in…

A case of mucormycosis localized in the brain is reported in a subject aged 18 years who was not suffering from diabetes. As the patient displayed symptoms of cerebral compression he was operated upon and a cystic formation was excised. Microscopic examination disclosed the presence of hyphae, displaying the characteristics of mucor, in chronic granulation tissue. The mycelia had a tendency to develop in the vessels and to invade them, and a structure very similar to a sporangium could be observed. Some of the mycelia had undergone dystrophic calcification. The patient has been kept under medic…

Mucormycosis remains a devastating invasive fungal infection, with high mortality rates even after active management. The disease is being reported at an alarming frequency over the past decades from India. Indian mucormycosis has certain unique features. Rhino-orbito-cerebral presentation associated with uncontrolled diabetes is the predominant characteristic. Isolated renal mucormycosis has emerged as a new clinical entity. Apophysomyces elegans and Rhizopus homothallicus are emerging species in this region and uncommon agents such as Mucor irregularis and Thamnostylum lucknowense are also b…

Mucormycosis has emerged as an increasingly important infection in oncology centres with high mortality, especially in severely immunocompromised patients. We carried out a retrospective study of 11 children with mucormycosis treated in seven French oncology-haematology paediatric wards during the period from 1991 to 2011. Lichtheimia corymbifera and Mucor spp. were the predominant pathogens. Treatment regimens included antifungal therapy, reversal of underlying predisposing risk factors and surgical debridement. Although mucormycosis is associated with high mortality, this infection could be …

Eight bacterial and five fungal species were isolated from swab samples taken from instruments used by pedicurists operating at three different sites in Lagos, Nigeria. The bacterial isolates included Micrococcus luteus, Micrococcus roseus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Hafnia spp, Shigella spp, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus spp. The five fungal isolates were identified as Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Mucor spp, Trichophyton spp and Candida albicans. The presence of these microorganisms, some of which are pathogenic, is an indication that pedicurists could be co…

Environmental fungal pathogens relevant to human and animal health pose significant risks, particularly in regions with intensive farming and climate variability. Several taxa detected in Thailand's clinical and environmental samples, such as Candida tropicalis, Talaromyces marneffei, and Mucor spp., are listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) Fungal Priority Pathogen List (FPPL). This study integrated next-generation sequencing (NGS) metabarcoding and decision tree models to characterize fungal communities and identify environmental conditions associated with pathogen absence across 18 …

Aspergillus peyronelii is an emerging and rare pathogen causing chronic rhinosinusitis with fungal nasal polyposis among immunocompetent individuals. Usual fungal aetiologies are Aspergillus spp, Mucor spp and Cladosporium spp, among which Aspergillus flavus being the most common in India. We present a case of 28-year-old woman with unilateral nasal obstruction with 15 years history of allergy, diagnosed as nasal polyposis, uncovered an uncommon pathogen A.peyronelii. Being a saprophytic and endophytic fungus, meticulously diagnostic approaches were employed for the precise identification. Fur…

A 64-year-old male with end-stage lung disease underwent right orthotopic lung transplantation. After doing well initially, he developed acute hypoxemic respiratory failure with allograft pneumonia. Donor operative cultures demonstrated mold of the Mucor species, which were corroborated by donor endobronchial cultures obtained near the right mainstem bronchial anastomosis. The patient was treated with reoperative bilateral orthotopic lung transplantation in combination with antifungal agents. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rapidly progressing, often fatal fungal infection that occurs commonly in diabetics and immunocompromised individuals. We present 2 cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis with a paranasal mass. One patient had an intracranial extension. Nasal scrapings and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the paranasal masses showed fungal hyphae morphologically resembling Mucor. Surgical material showed features of mucormycosis. FNAC and scrape smears can give a conclusive diagnosis of mucormycosis, and the patient can be treated with appropriate antifungal therapy and su…

Cutaneous mucormycosis in a renal transplant recipient resulted in gangrenous cellulitis of the neck at an internal jugular cannula site. This nosocomial process was due to a histologically confirmed infection, and cultures revealed Mucor sp. The patient died despite surgical debridement and amphotericin B therapy. Cutaneous mucormycosis is a relatively rare entity with only 12 cases previously reported. In renal transplant patients only nine cases of renal transplant patients only nine cases of mucormycosis have been reported and only one was cutaneous. Also, this case reported is the second …

Previous studies have suggested that the focal accumulation of phagocytic leukocytes is an important feature of the host response in mucormycosis. To ascertain the basis for this influx of inflammatory cells, we evaluated the effect of members of the order Mucorales, including species from the genera Rhizopus, Absidia, and Mucor, on the chemotactic activity of normal human serum for neutrophils and monocytes. Both hyphae and spores produced concentration-dependent chemotaxigenesis in serum to a maximum level equivalent to that produced by zymosan activation of serum. Chemotactic activity was s…

Zygomycosis is an increasing threat to patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Zygomycosis (formerly called mucormycosis) is the fungal infection with Mucor, Rhizopus, or other species that share a common morphology of large empty pauciseptate hyphae with rare random-angle branching and a collapsed "twisted ribbon" appearance. Morphology allows a specific diagnosis on frozen section or smear prior to growth and identification of the fungi in culture which makes it improtant because treatment is different than that for more common mycoses such as candidiasis and aspergillosi…

In developing tropical countries, rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis has been a cause of severe morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Classically, it develops as an aggressive angioinvasive destruction of nasal, orbital and cerebral involvement. Blindness is a major disabling complication. The association of mucor in cancer is linked with immunosuppression caused by radiation and/or chemotherapy. In this case report, we tried to explore the diverse possibilities of neck swelling, nasal discharge, ocular swelling and dimness of vision in a teenage boy. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rar…

Over recent years the clinical importance of mucormycosis has significantly increased. Most frequently mucormycosis occurs in neutropenic patients with haematological diseases. It is caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. The clinical patterns of the disease produced by different genera or species of Mucorales are virtually identical. Rhizopus, Absidia, Rhizomucor and Mucor are the organisms most commonly isolated from patients who suffer from mucormycosis. Diagnosis of mucormycosis is difficult as it is based on culture methods or microscopy of clinical specimens. The diagnosis is often only…

The second wave of COVID pandemic was associated with an outbreak of Mucormycosis. The mortality rate of Mucormycosis reaches 50-80% in cases with orbital and intracranial extension (Fadda in Acta Otorhinolaryngol Ital 41:43-50, 2021). In this outbreak we found that few of these patients had bacterial invasive sinusitis mimicking fungal sinusitis. Amphotericin the only effective drug against Mucormycosis is highly toxic and expensive and not indicated in bacterial sinusitis. Our aim was to determine the exact etiologic agent, predisposing factors and outcome of treatment of COVID associated i…
