Plasma cell orificial mucositis is a benign idiopathic condition of orificial mucous membranes, characterized histopathologically by a dense plasmacytic infiltrate. Although plasma cell orificial mucositis was originally described by Zoon as occurring on the glans penis, conditions similar to plasma cell orificial mucositis involving other body orifices have been reported under various names. A patient with involvement of the lips and epiglottis associated with psoriasis and fissured tongue is described. Plasma cell orificial mucositis must be differentiated from numerous other entities, inclu…

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is frequently used in cancer treatment; however, it may cause adverse events, which must be managed. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been reported to be involved in the induction of intestinal mucositis and diarrhea, which are common side effects of treatment with fluoropyrimidine 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Our previous studies have shown that oral administration of cystine and theanine (CT) increases glutathione (GSH) production in vivo. In the present study, we hypothesized that CT might inhibit oxidative stress, including the overproduction of ROS, and attenuate 5-FU…

BACKGROUND: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) had shown efficacy in treating Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). There are currently no clinical studies evaluating whether the efficacy and safety of HCQ differ in IgAN with concurrent nasopharyngeal or intestinal mucosal and non-mucosal infections at the time of diagnosis. METHODS: This prospective multicenter cohort study enrolled patients aged > 18 years with biopsy-proven IgAN who had received optimized renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor (RAASi) therapy for at least 1 month, 24-hour urinary protein creatinine ratio (UPCR) of 0.75–3.5 g/g

BACKGROUND: Mucosal healing is necessary to maintain the long-term remission of ulcerative colitis (UC). Currently, the gold standard for assessing mucosal healing is endoscopic diagnosis. The Mayo Endoscopic Subscore (MES) is the most commonly used index for evaluating endoscopic mucosal healing; however, a certain number of patients may experience relapse during the clinical course of the disease, even at MES 0, where the mucosa appears to be in a state of healing. Therefore, the usefulness of image-enhanced endoscopy, such as narrow-band imaging, linked color imaging, autofluorescence imagi

Mucosal melanoma is a rare malignant disease developed from melanocyte. We report the case of a patient with nasal cavity mucosal melanoma with a primary clinical and histological diagnosis of malignant lentigo with mucosal spreading. The presence of a c-Kit mutation, in a second lecture and the evolving nature of the lesion, reorientated the diagnosis of malignant lentigo to mucosal melanoma with skin extension. Extensive surgical resection and foramen free flap with costal graft reconstruction may have a local control of the disease. Yet, after one year, a regional evolution involving a para

Mucosal vaccine has been considered a promising strategy to prevent upper respiratory infections. As the immunization routes to induce mucosal immune responses, oral, intranasal, and sublingual immunizations are proposed for clinical application. Recently, it has been reported that transcutaneous immunization is also capable of inducing mucosal immune responses. However, it still remains unclear which route is the most effective to induce mucosal immune responses in upper respiratory organs. In order to investigate the differences in the immune responses among several mucosal immunizations, mi

Chemotherapy-induced mucositis (CIM) is a debilitating side effect impacting as many as 90% of patients with cancer undergoing treatment. Patients receiving 5-fluorouracil (5FU), a first-line chemotherapeutic in colorectal cancer, experience significant gastrointestinal distress that perpetuates poor patient quality of life and reduces treatment tolerance, efficacy, and survival. Natural compounds have shown promise in improving CIM through their pleiotropic actions, including immune and mucosal regulation. We examined whether panaxynol, a bioactive compound isolated from American ginseng, can…

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common inflammatory disorder characterized by epithelial barrier destruction, uncontrolled inflammation, and impaired mucosal repair. Despite the complex tissue microenvironment in OM, which is driven by interconnected pathological processes, current therapeutic approaches are hindered by their predominant focus on single factors. In this study, we identified ferroptosis as a key driver of OM progression through clinical sample analysis and mechanistic validation, revealing that disrupted selenium metabolism and decreased Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression prom…

Background/Objectives: Peri-implant diseases, including mucositis and peri-implantitis, pose significant clinical challenges due to their inflammatory nature and potential for progressive bone loss. These conditions, primarily driven by bacterial biofilm accumulation, require effective management to prevent further tissue destruction and maintain implant longevity. This systematic review aimed to determine whether the use of chitosan or titanium brushes in the surgical or non-surgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis or peri-implantitis provides clinical advantages-particularly reductions i…

Oral mucositis (OM) is a prevalent complication of cancer therapy, frequently associated with oral pain, dysphagia, malnutrition, and systemic infections. OM that develops during cancer treatment can result in delays or interruptions in anti-cancer therapies, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Oral cryotherapy (OC) involves the use of crushed ice, specialized cryotherapy devices, and other cooling methods to lower the temperature in the oral cavity during chemotherapy or radiotherapy, thereby reducing the incidence and severity of cancer treatment-related OM. This review aims t…

INTRODUCTION: Microbial dysbiosis links to mucosal immune dysregulation, but the specific bacterial contributions to oral mucosal inflammation remain unclear. Escherichia coli (E. coli), a pathogen well-characterized in mucosal immunity and immune regulation studies, has been observed to be enriched in chronic oral inflammatory lesions and was reported to modulate T helper 17 cells (Th17)/T regulatory cells (Treg) homeostasis. Here, we developed an oral mucositis mouse model via tongue scratch and E. coli topical application to investigate its role in Th17/Treg imbalance.
METHODS: The inflamm…

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) and taste dysfunction (dysgeusia) are common complications of radiotherapy in cancer patients. Current clinical interventions for RIOM mainly focus on symptom alleviation but with limited efficacy and nonevidenced taste protection. Our previous study showed that systemic administration of lithium (a Wnt agonist) ameliorated radiation-induced oral mucositis and dysgeusia by promoting basal cell proliferation and taste bud renewal. However, the potential cytotoxicity of systemic administration of lithium necessitates topical application. In this study, a p…
