Vulvar myiasis due to Wohlfahrtia magnifica.

Myiasis is a condition resulting from the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by the larvae of dipterous flies. The distribution of myiasis is worldwide, with more cases being reported from tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate areas. The various forms of myiasis may be classified from an entomological or a clinical point of view. This report describes a rare case of vulvar myiasis due to Wohlfahrtia magnifica in an otherwise healthy 20-year-old Iranian female. To our knowledge, this is the first report of cutaneous myiasis of the vulva due to W. magnifica from Iran and the Mid…

Cutaneous myiasis in three obese cats.

Three cats presented with painful, putrid smelling ulcers on their thighs and around their tails. Examination of the fly larvae found in the ulcers revealed that the cats suffered cutaneous blowfly myiasis caused by Calliphora erythrocephala larvae. Obesity was one of the predisposing factors for the development of this parasitic condition. After therapy with ivermectin, the larvae disappeared within two days.

An unusual nosocomial infection: nasotracheal myiasis.

A number of fly maggots were found emerging from the nose and tracheostomy site of an 82-year-old woman who had been in a coma for two months in an acute care hospital in a large Canadian city. This case history indicates that the infestation was hospital-acquired and although undoubtedly an extremely rare occurrence, at least in Canada, points out the risk of myiasis in the unconscious, debilitated patient.

[Native myiasis: report of 2 cases].

Myiasis is a well known conditions among veterinarians, as it causes ravages in cattle. However, in men is at least infrequent, even rare, as judged from the uncommon reports in the literature. We report two cases of human autochthonous myiasis, which can be described as "urban". They appeared in the same geographical area, and flies of the genera Sarcophaga and Lucilia were implicated.

[Imported myiasis: analysis of 5 cases].

Five cases of furuncular myiasis imported by Spanish travelers from tropical countries are reported. After reviewing the cycle of the infecting organism and the characteristics of the human disease, a table with the clinical and epidemiological data of our patients is presented. The relevance of an adequate clinical and geographical anamnesis in these patients is discussed. Finally, the effectiveness of a simple, nonaggressive treatment is reported, which permits the patient to verify by himself the disappearance of the parasite.

Eosinophilic pleural effusion in cutaneous myiasis.

We have reported the case of a 54-year-old man with recurrent painful migratory subcutaneous nodules associated with marked blood eosinophilia and an eosinophilic pleural effusion. The entire syndrome was subsequently determined to be due to cutaneous myiasis caused by the larvae of Hypoderma lineatum, the cattle botfly. Infestation by this or other dipterous fly larvae should be among the parasitic diseases considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient with similar symptoms.

[Furunculoid myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis].

The authors report a case of forunculoid miasis by "Dermatobia hominis" ("Ura" fly). a process that being not very common in the Argentine Republic is sometimes misjudged as a furunculosis. The patient reported, a white woman, 51, travelled to a zone where this parasitose is endemid. After some time of her stay there, she noted three small nodes in her vulvar region. They grew on until reaching nearly the size of a walnut. At her first consultation with a gynecologist it was taken as a case of furuncolosis and treated with antibiotics. As the treatment didn't prove succesful, she asked for der
