Caffeine monitoring in biological fluids by solid surface fluorescence using membranes modified with nanotubes.

BACKGROUND: In this work, a new methodology based upon enhancement of rhodamine B fluorescent signal is proposed for the quantification of caffeine traces. METHODS: Membrane filters treated with multiple wall carbon nanotubes were employed as solid support for determination step by solid surface fluorescence. RESULTS: Experimental variables that influence the preconcentration step and fluorimetric sensitivity have been optimized using uni-variation assays, presenting linearity from 1.1 to 9.7×10(3) μg/l, with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. At optimal conditions, a limit of detection of 0…

Unexpected helicity control and helix inversion: homochiral helical nanotubes consisting of an achiral ligand.

The ligand tppda has been designed and synthesized as molecular leverage for helicity control when reacted with Cd(2+) ions. The guests MeOH or DMF preferentially stabilize the P-helical isomer, while the guest H2O causes a helix inversion to give the M-helical isomer as the major isomer without any chiral auxiliary.

Electrocatalytic activity of Pd-loaded Ti/TiO2 nanotubes cathode for TCE reduction in groundwater.

A novel cathode, Pd loaded Ti/TiO2 nanotubes (Pd-Ti/TiO2NTs), is synthesized for the electrocatalytic reduction of trichloroethylene (TCE) in groundwater. Pd nanoparticles are successfully loaded on TiO2 nanotubes which grow on Ti plate via anodization. Using Pd-Ti/TiO2NTs as the cathode in an undivided electrolytic cell, TCE is efficiently and quantitatively transformed to ethane. Under conditions of 100 mA and pH 7, the removal efficiency of TCE (21 mg/L) is up to 91% within 120 min, following pseudo-first-order kinetics with the rate constant of 0.019 min(-1). Reduction rates increase from …

Radiation-induced grafting of carbon nanotubes on HPLC silica microspheres: theoretical and practical aspects.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were grafted for the first time by γ-radiation onto silica microspheres in the presence of polybutadiene (PB) as the linking agent, obtaining a novel hybrid material with chromatographic properties, with an alternative approach to the existing procedures. The synthesis involves the one-pot γ-radiation-induced grafting of MWCNTs onto silica microspheres in the presence of PB as a linking agent. PB also serves as a coating layer of the silica particles, to which MWCNTs are anchored through stable chemical bonds formed via radical chain reaction with the pol…

Low doses of pristine and oxidized single-wall carbon nanotubes affect mammalian embryonic development.

Several in vitro and in vivo studies suggest local and systemic effects following exposure to carbon nanotubes. No data are available, however, on their possible embryotoxicity in mammals. In this study, we tested the effect of pristine and oxidized single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on the development of the mouse embryo. To this end, SWCNTs (from 10 ng to 30 μg/mouse) were administered to female mice soon after implantation (postcoital day 5.5); 10 days later, animals were sacrificed, and uteri, placentas, and fetuses examined. A high percentage of early miscarriages and fetal malformatio…

Carbon-coated SnO2 nanotubes: template-engaged synthesis and their application in lithium-ion batteries.

This paper reports the synthesis of carbon-coated SnO2 (SnO2-C) nanotubes through a simple glucose hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach by using Sn nanorods as sacrificial templates. The as-synthesized SnO2-C nanotubes have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance compared to pure SnO2 nanotubes. The hollow nanostructure, together with the carbon matrix which has good buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, can be responsible for the improved cyclic performance.

Multi-wall carbon nanotubes bonding on silica-hydride surfaces for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

Prepared multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) materials, including untreated MWNT, HNO(3)-treated MWNT and HNO(3)-HCl-treated MWNT were covalently attached onto a silica-hydride-modified capillary by hydrosilation, using the abundant double bonds between the pentagon carbons in the MWNT structure. These MWNT-incorporated capillaries were characterized by SEM, ATR-IR and electroosmotic flow (EOF) measurements in phosphate buffers with a pH range of 3.7-9.3 and in the mixtures of acetonitrile modifier. The untreated capillary was assumed to carry some carboxylate groups formed on the non-acid-treat

Carbon nanotubes with small and tunable diameters from poly(ferrocenylsilane)-block-polysiloxane diblock copolymers.

Iron-containing nanostructures produced from various self-assembled poly(ferrocenylsilane)-block-polysiloxane thin films are catalytically active for the initiation and growth of high density, small diameter carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Moreover, the tube diameter and density can be tuned by adjusting the chain lengths of the block copolymer. Iron-containing nanostructures from poly(ferrocenylmethylethylsilane)-b-poly(methylvinylsiloxane) polymer with 25 repeat units of an iron-containing segment and 265 repeat units of a non-iron-containing segment are able to produce CNTs with diameters around o…

In vitro toxicity evaluation of single walled carbon nanotubes on human A549 lung cells.

This paper describes the in vitro cytotoxicity assessment of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) on A549 cells, a human lung cell line. Cellular viability was determined using the alamar blue (AB), neutral red (NR) and MTT assays, which evaluated metabolic, lysosomal and mitochondrial activity respectively. In addition, the total protein content of the cells was measured using the coomassie brilliant (CB) blue assay. Supernatants were also assayed for Adenylate Kinase (AK) release and Interleukin 8 (IL-8) which indicated a loss of cell membrane integrity and an inflammation response respect…

Unique aggregation of anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) spores by sugar-coated single-walled carbon nanotubes.

There has been significant interest in the binding of anthrax spores by molecular species, but with only limited success. Proteins and more recently peptides were used. However, despite the known presence of carbohydrates on the spore surface, carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions have hardly been explored likely because of the lack of required specific platform for synthetic carbohydrates. We report the successful use of single-walled carbon nanotubes as a truly unique scaffold for displaying multivalent monosaccharide ligands that bind effectively to anthrax spores with divalent cation medi…

Physicochemical predictors of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube-induced pulmonary histopathology and toxicity one year after pulmonary deposition of 11 different Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in mice.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are widely used nanomaterials that cause pulmonary toxicity upon inhalation. The physicochemical properties of MWCNT vary greatly, which makes general safety evaluation challenging to conduct. Identification of the toxicity-inducing physicochemical properties of MWCNT is therefore of great importance. We have evaluated histological changes in lung tissue 1 year after a single intratracheal instillation of 11 well-characterized MWCNT in female C57BL/6N BomTac mice. Genotoxicity in liver and spleen was evaluated by the comet assay. The dose of 54 μg MWCNT co…

Dual roles of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in anammox systems: Conductive enhancement or toxic burden?

Integrating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) systems offers a promising nitrogen removal strategy, yet the balance between conductive stimulation and nanotoxicity remains poorly understood. This study elucidated the dose-dependent mechanisms of MWCNTs on anammox consortia. A distinct biphasic response was observed: low doses (optimal 30 mg·L-1) enhanced specific anammox activity by 18.82 ± 1.73% (p < 0.001), whereas high doses (≥ 100 mg·L-1) caused severe inhibition. Mechanistically, 30 mg·L-1 MWCNTs stimulated EPS to physically intercept nanop…

Direct reduction of CO2catalyzed by a formate dehydrogenase immobilized on carbon nanotubes without NADH cofactor.

This paper describes the electroenzymatic reduction of CO2to formate catalyzed by formate dehydrogenase fromCandida boidinii(CbFDH) immobilized on carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified gold electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry indicates thatCbFDH could catalyze CO2reduction to formate without protonated nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) as a cofactor, exhibiting diffusion-controlled, quasi-reversible kinetics on both multi-walled CNT and single-walled CNT substrates. Surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectra indicate thatCbFDH adopts a near-parallel orientation on the CNT-modified gold surface, p

MIL-88A(Fe)-derived Co9S8/Fe2O3 nanotubes: Construction of Schottky junction for enhanced pesticide removal.

The extensive use of pesticides poses serious risks to the environment and human health. Developing advanced technology for pesticide degradation is a key demand in modern agriculture. In this work, we fabricated a unique Co9S8/Fe2O3 Schottky junction via in situ growth of Co9S8 onto MIL-88A(Fe) derived Fe2O3 nanotubes, and applied it for degrading a typical neonicotinoid pesticide, thiamethoxam, by photocatalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The established heterojunction enables rapid electron transfer from Fe2O3 to Co9S8, thereby increasing the excitation-deexcitation cycle efficienc…

Oxidative functionalization of carbon nanotubes for enhanced adsorptive removal of phthalate esters in environmental systems.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are high-volume manufacturing organic materials used in plasticisers to increase the elasticity of the core poly … phthalates. This review discusses how different oxidative techniques employed for modifying carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can improve their ability to remove PAEs by changing their surface chemistry. Several oxidation approaches introduce oxygenated functional groups on the CNT surface, which increase their specific surface area, making them suitable for adsorbi …

Microglial tunneling nanotubes: an intercellular transfer facilitating mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation in experimental cerebral malaria.

Cerebral malaria (CM), the most severe neurological manifestation of Plasmodium infection, is characterized by microglial activation that plays a pivotal role in initiating pathogenic neuroinflammatory cascades. Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are dynamic F-actin-based intercellular connections which transfer mitochondria and pathogenic factors. Although TNTs have been implicated in various neuropathological conditions, their precise involvement in CM pathogenesis, particularly in relation to microglial activation, remains undefined. In this study, single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) revealed si…

Tuning charge density waves and magnetic switching in carbon nanowires encased in boron nitride nanotubes.

The emergence of exotic charge density waves (CDW) alongside ferrimagnetic materials opens exciting new possibilities for quantum switching, particularly in field-tuning CDW electronics. However, these two phenomena often compete and rely heavily on strong electronic correlations. While carbon nanowire arrays have been experimentally shown to exhibit ferromagnetism above 400 K, our research shows that encapsulating a linear carbon chain (LCC) within zigzag boron nitride nanotubes (BNT) induces a short-range CDW state under the competing effect of ferrimagnetism and magnetic frustrations. Howev…

The Water Droplet Contact Line Probed with Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes at the Air-Water Interface.

Within the issue of sessile droplet evaporation, particularly important is the behavior of the triple phase contact line governed by pinning phenomena. We demonstrate how pristine, insoluble multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) can exhibit ordering phenomena at the air-water interface, contribute to droplet pinning, and are also responsive to the evolving shape of evaporating water droplets at the contact line. The arc-discharge-synthesized MWNTs were of high quality, but they were mixed with graphitic impurity particles in the 10-100 nm size ranges. The MWNTs were ordered into chain structures…
